Hey /k/, what would be the ideal gun for a contemporary tunnel rat clearing out abandoned mines/limestone caves? Assume potential targets are roughly man-sized and unarmored. Also assume more than one target may be encountered at one time.

My thoughts:
>ability to mount a super bright flashlight is key
>subsonic/suppressible caliber ideal for allowing hearing post-shot
>frangible or hollow point non-fmj bullets might be necessary to prevent ricochet
>design should be compact in case climbing or crawling is necessary
>design should function when exposed to mud/grit

This a euphemism for what you do to animals, or what animals do to you? I know that's a key distinction.

A super bright flashlight is useful outdoors, where the distances are long and there's nothing reflecting light back in your face. In a tunnel you don't need extreme power because you don't need to see far, and in fact extreme power is a liability because much of the light reflects back and blinds you with glare.

You say you want a compact gun yet your pic shows an enormous gun with enormous ammo.

No, you literally need to flood the tunnels with molten lead, it’s the only way to stop him

that's a dreadful choice.
between ear pro and a suppressor I don't think itd trade terminal performance for volume. it'll still be loud, but survivable without subsonic ammo. if you are extremely concerned about length, bullpups exist, and help with the length disadvantages of adding a suppressor. if you don't want a bullpup and you think a pistol round is enough, plenty of PCCs you could choose from.

I wasn’t suggesting that picrel was a good idea, it’s just a pic I found.

Perhaps a better option: load both under barrels with 12ga buck, and the top barrel with a flare for light

Someone has obviously never shot a gun in a stone cave or concrete tunnel. Your ears will be gone after the first shot if you use full velocity supersonic rounds and your head will be left ringin like a church bell. Not ideal for placing follow up shots in already challenging conditions. Earpro is a must if you arent willing to let cavitation go.

>>62891854
My answer would be, depends on the foreseen quantity of "targets". I would suggest a pistol like a .380 Walther PPS if only a handful of encounters. If more, then a PDW in a pistol caliber like 9mm or .45. Obviously ammo choice is crucial to make up for the limited velocity.

>Your ears will be gone after the first shot if you use full velocity supersonic rounds
Yes. But even a suppressed .410 is going to be loud AF in a cave. The idea you could shoot any kind of gun in there without ear pro is absurd. Therefore ear pro is a given, which means how loud the gun is doesn't really matter.

Interesting idea. If you don’t have access to real gas you could do a big bore launcher with CS or pepper rounds as a first strike. You could also shoot big flares for illumination/dazzlement

Shooting in a cave/tunnel is royghly comparable to shooting inside. Suppression is absolutely effective. Hearing safe in your garage will likely be fine innacave.

The flashlight is more for blinding trog eyes

did somebody say GOBLINS?!?!?

Honestly kinda a cop out but a .300 blk shorty with a barrel length in the 5-9" range would probably be ideal. Only real competition would be an SMG and pistol combo in the same caliber.
>>
>>62892318
You could even do it with adjustable gas block so you can turn a screw to make it a straight-pull.

with ear pro and a suppressor? I've shot unsuppressed at those faggot tunnel ranges and it was oppressive with my type 53 and only earmuffs. it would have been a ton better if it had been suppressed. I dunno if you misread my post, I implied that a suppressor is essentially required. the only trade off I was implying pondering was super vs. subsonic ammo.

So you're not planning on blind firing a full mag off each corner that might have an enemy?
>>
I have not had experience with .410, so can't speak for that. I do like the idea, but your biggest factor within confined spaces will be sound/blast/concussion. For this application, .22lr would be ideal especially when factoring in cost. Sure, .32acp or other calibers would work fine. My vote goes to a pistol or 10-22 like carbine with a folding stock. You could in theory get by with 9mm, but it will still be loud. Even .38 isn't exactly pleasant. I would also prioritize a red dot. Irons isn't exactly a viable option here. Light is important, but don't forget light discipline if that matters for your purposes. Bring extra batteries for all of your devices. Also be conscious of air and conditions within the confined space.

everyone is talking about suppression, but am I crazy for thinking the opposite is desirable? if OP's monsters live underground, they probably rely on sound more than sight. if thats the case I vote for an AMD-65 with drum mags, or really any sbr with a ridiculous muzzle brake
