What is /k/'s opinion on 8mm Mauser?
>>
It’s based and I wish the ammo was more common. You can kill anything outside of Africa with it.
>>
>>62892369
It's the most common and least expensive milsurp caliber at least.

Though the cheapest surplus 8mm you tend to find is kinda iffy quality. Corrosive as fuck and old as fuck with degraded powder and primers that can be unpredictable and often way hotter than it should be because of that.
>>
>>62892380
>way hotter than it needs to be and corrosive
Yeah the surplus ammo I got was a giant block of Romanian, and some Turkish in there too. Turks don't know how to measure, it's all hot and stinks bad. Would recommend just buying modern stuff like the blue box above. Not much of a price difference, but much better experience.

I seent it zipp thru AR500 one time

Excellent caliber. Surplus is cheaper than .308 provided you don't mind cleaning corrosive ammo.

You can also kill just about everything inside of Africa with it too aside from from serious big game. 8x57 was in use in Africa in the German colonies through WWI.

I picked up 300 rounds of yugo surp 8mm on stripper clips back in 2019 for 50cpr. Primers are really freakin hard. Dont work well in my M48 but excellently in my K98k
>>
>>62892345
it's pretty cool, the PPU stuff is downloaded, at least when I had some.
>>
>>62892490
>PPU is downloaded
I heard S&B makes the closest commercial ammo to millitary spec
>>
>>62892345
A good cartridge and available in a lot of cool rifles, from milsurp Mausers to modern European hunting rifles. Capable of killing anything in Europe or North America and a majority of stuff in Africa.
On the other hand, the words of Townsend Whelen often ring in my ear whenever I think about 8mm Mauser.
>The .30-06 is never a mistake.

One of my favorite surp rounds. Its good, still produced, and some of the cheaper more available surp anyway.
>>
>>62892490
That's why you keep the brass for reloading. Throw in some 150gr hotcors and you get some screamers.

I like the PPU 8mm, but I wish it was cheaper.

308 but worse

guns are made to be used anon.

its what your grandpa would want.
>>
>>62892345
Smkh pops level IV plates.
>>
>>62892345
>powerful
>still decently priced compared to other surp rounds
>still has some variety of ammo available
>can't think of a single bad gun chambered in it
>can't even name a single lame gun chambered in it
Plus it's just so nicely shaped, not too stout or slender with a great projectile to case ratio
>>
>>62892799
nonsense, send a few just to smooth her out.
>>
>>62892345
Dead caliber, not at all worth buying into. Especially now that all of the surplus rifles and ammo are gone.

I hand my Mauser to friends who don’t shoot much or don’t shoot surp to get into it.

Incredible feedback, the manual cycling of the bolt and hearing the big case bounce off the concrete massages many smooth brains.

The surplus ammo bruises my shoulder after a day at the range, but groups well and ordering 8mm Mauser online is cheaper than bulk buying 223 right not even.

I remember going to the range with a few friends, one friend bought a new AR and I brought my Mauser. He was getting a little butt hurt that everyone that came kept only wanting to shoot my rifle after going through half a mag of his.

It’s just fun.

just avoid Turk, Greek, Iraqi. That shit's unnecessarily hot. Corrosive doesn't matter if you just fucking clean your gun
>>
>>62893685
Turk ammo has lots of cracked cases, Greek ammo has been my only failure to fire after the pin dropped.

That's hot. What kind of accuracy are you getting with it? Also, are the barrels chrome lined on them?
>>
>>62892345
It's fine, but unless you have a mauser there's no reason to consider it.

No-one's chambering 8mm, and barely anyone is even making barrels. I guarantee each year more guns are chambered in 338-06 than 8x57. 338-06 is better, and you can make it from 30-06.

It's ok, I traded a inexpensive 300$ taurus 856 to a boomer for this one. I like the s&b over the ppu and it's virtually the same cost as far as new brass goes and isn't downloaded. Have only got about 300 ish rounds of 8mm through it this year. I shoot my mosin way more at 60 cpr, I'll use the mauser for something other than slapping plates at 100-300 yards (max distance at my range) in 2025 deer season. Accurate enough rifles but my particular mauser has a pretty shit sight picture so I threw that burris on there on a BAT no drill no tap mount bc repro or original scope set ups are expensive and generally require modification to the rifle and this is just a old beat up turkish. Probably would be funner to shoot iron sights on it if it had a front sight hood. I just like old shit, aside from my edc all my guns are from 1940 - 78. Happy they still make 8mm, even if around a 1.00 - 1.15 a round. I'll get a nicer mauser one day but for now Id rather keep buying ammo and shoot what i got.

That's pretty cool anon, mind posting a pic of the entire rifle?
