What are good options for a starter AR if you don't mind spending a bit more as long as it doesn't get into gucci territory? So far I've been recommended a M400 variant or a cheap PSA anything.

PSA always has super cheap lowers on sale and if you can stomach it, you can get a stripped lower from them for like 40 bucks and assemble it yourself with quality parts and save some money. Otherwise, if you want more, you could get a geissele super duty upper which will give you good components and an excellent barrel. You wont have to really swap anything out with it if you dont want to. The old meta, like in the Trump 1 years back when people were more experimental, was to get a BCM upper and swap the handguard for something they liked more based on their taste. This doesnt really matter a ton for you if your objective is just shooting and you arent trying to be a nerd, but it is a good option. IMO if you are this new id recommend a BCM complete 14.5 rifle, itll do everything fine. Slap an ACOG on there with a top dot RMR and get a sling and youll have rifle that can do everything well. You can fidget with stuff as you learn but this will be a basis that wont let you down I think

It's a double edge sword because we have all these safe queen boomers making claims about brands that just aren't true. An off the shelf Daniel Defense, in my opinion, is about the best value for money rifle there is, you can swap out the BCG with an LMT Enhanced and you've functionally got the best AR money can buy. Noveske steel are more accurate, Knight's and G$ are great if you're doing a lot of heavy firing and need something to beat up. BCM are great all around. At the end of the day though, all of these differences and qualities aren't going to be visible for the average shooter in a million years. I have a Smith and Wesson M&P that I got from my dad, I'm convinced that the average person wouldn't be able to tell the difference shooting it from my $4,000 build. They're functionally the same. So what it comes down to for you is preference, what looks cool to you and who has decent enough quality control that it will still be reliable in a few thousand shots. Go with that and start looking into upgrades when you're good enough to notice the minute difference, stuff like recoil control, weight distribution, gas, performance at 50-100, 400+ and proper cycling. Get something like a PSA or used BCM and use it, enjoy it, stop worrying whatever the fuck the community says because we're all retarded and full of shit. In about a year you'll be able to build a better gun or at least know what you're looking for in a new one.

How one moves above or below is more determined by materials and quality control than anything else. How one moves laterally within a category is up to their own personal preference. For example, quad rail vs mlok, carbine gas vs midlength gas, piston vs DI. US manufactured ARs in current year are, generally speaking, pretty well made all things considered. As long as you stay away from low tier brands you really can't fuck up enough for it to matter, and if you somehow do, there's usually a relatively inexpensive way to solve the problem.
