Even if you don't die on the spot, you'll still lose limbs. Only time it's been similarly bad was during the early gunpowder era, when you had no bayonet, and there were still lancers and demi-lancers roaming the battlefield. If your pikemen got mashed by arty or opposing arquebusiers, you'd be massacred by the enemy's heavy cavalry.

When I was leaving the infantry nearly 10 years ago the unit was getting sent new guys who could not even pass basic fitness standards and had an incredibly long way to go before they were at the standard expected once you'd been 6 months in battalion. If it was like that then I suppose it's only gotten worse by now seeing as the trends of enshitification and pussyfication have only gotten worse. At the time there were stories circulating about plans to allow women to join and for a 'new set of fitness standards'.
