All the old school snubbies were 6 shot, now it seems like every snub nose is 5 shot. Ruger, Taurus, etc. Why is this? It’s not like the cylinder technology got WORSE.
>>64495109Buy a 32, or a k frame.
Who's buying a revolver for capacity?
>>64495109Because the old ones with 6 were probably .38, and many of the new ones that are 5-shot are .357. Also, different size frames. You can have a snub-nose X-frame as much as you can a J-frame.
>>64495109the best snubbie ever is a 5 shot j frame shut your whore mouth
6 shot snub nose supremacy..
>>64495590>>64495109>k6s>that other newer 6 shot .357 j frame equivalent>632>lcr in .327No excuses
>>64495595Weak
>>64495109Plenty of old school snubbies were 5-shot. Goetz's was 5-shot.The reason for them being 5 shot is because the cylinder can be made smaller, making it easier to conceal carry. You could also fit 6 shots of .32 into that same space, but most people prefer .38 Special.
>>64495109Semi on-topic: How thick whould cylinder have to be to safely house a intermediate/full power cartrige? Would it be feasible with a 4 round capacity?
>>64495109because the market caters to 38 Special, since boomerkeks refuse to switch to .327
>Oy vey people of the jury this man dumped one third his semiautomatic magazine into moy client
>>64495109Boomers always thought bigger is better. Muh 45 aarp for auto loaders and they thought anything less than 38 special was useless.Thankfully we have found out that 9mm is quite good and that 32 is a much better round for snubbies. S&W has 3 different models of the 32 revolver now. A 432/632 UC, both with a titanium cylinder and now a cheaper model without rear sights.
>>64495109>All the old school snubbies were 6 shotWere you born stupid or was this something that happened later in life?
>>64496086Rounds like 454 Casull, .460 & .500 S&W, etc, operate at full-on rifle pressures. The cylinder wouldn't have to be any thicker than that. The real problem is that bottleneck cartridges don't play nice with revolvers. The cases tend to stretch and jam up the cylinder, this was a big problem with people cooking up hot-rod cartridges for metallic silhouette shooting in the 1970's. People tried stuff like necking down .44 Magnum to .357 to get flatter-shooting cartridges that were still capable of knocking down 200 yard targets, and cylinder lockup was a common problem with these.
>>64495109Old school snubbies were cut down duty revolvers. Purpose designed ones went to 5 shots because the whole point is concealability. I wish .32 revolvers didn't have 6 shots. I want a super slim 5 shot .327.

>>64495109Budget cuts
A thing I like with 5shot revolver, it's you can shoot a box without having to do a "half reload".It a "sort of OCD", feel strange to not finish at full capacity
>>64497669I always just load 5 rounds into my GP100 and close the cylinder on the empty chamber.
>>64495109It's because of muh decimal system. They understand what 5 is, their vestigial brains freeze when they think of 6.
>>64498002Elaborate.
>>64496937It’s not as bad as you think? But unless you put it under a puffy jacket it’s not gonna conceal well. Luckily it’s more of a “I have it and shoot it so I may as well carry it while hiking in bear country” and so far ursine eyes have not been able to distinguish it. Note if you are looking for a bear defense gun I’d recommend a nice semi auto 10mm unless you want to put in the cash to buy a lot of expensive ammo to learn to shoot well and practice regularly.. or you want to commit to learn how to reload to practice and stay current with it… unless you possibly in Alaskan, 10mm with a 16+ round mag is gonna be a much more sane option.. but if you want to put in the effort then this is a possibility.. I suppose it would also be good if you ran into a moose or something.. and if you run into the far more common “strung out crackhead” while out hiking.. then I’d say this does have a certain amount of prescence that a polymer 9mm or even 10mm just doesn’t project…
>>64495109>OP "All the old school snubbies were 6 shot'As this anon >>64496025 explains, most of (*all* of the .38s) the older snubnose revolvers were 5-shot.6-shot small—not just 'snubby' also the 3- or 4-inch barrel—revolvers have been in smaller calibers than .38, such as .32Most of the recent-model snubnose and carry revolvers in the .32 calibers have been 6-shot.22 LR revolvers have been 8- or 9-shot cylinders

>>64495109Most people,at least in America, got to be better and better shots. As the calendar years rolled be, we found that 5 is eough to kill 3 guys at lease once, and still have suicide rounds for youself and your perggo wife. Or kill 2 of the 3 guys twice, or kill five guys at least once. Usually, 3 shots is enough, if you are a good marksman. People who use semiautos are always poor shots, amd compensate for lots of misses and poor marksmanship, with greater capacity. It's a sad state. But the guys who know, know that a 5 shot revo is always enough for a guy and his moll. Unless you are out west and live by a Rez, then you want a six shooter AND a lever gun for killing redskins that jump the reservation and go on the warpath. It is incomprehensible that the news does not report such occurrences, which happen on a regular basis. In fact, I saw a Rez jumper just the other day. They even changed the name to the "Commanders" to further suppress the truth. And yet, still, by God, I love America!

>>64495109I used to own a S&W 386PD. It was a 7 shot snub nose. I would have attached a pic, but for some reason my IP range is currently banned from uploading pics for some reason. This was one of only two firearms I've ever sold and the only one I regret selling. The other one I sold was a Taurus 85, so no ragrets on that one.
>>64495109You have this backwards, anon. The old snubbies were guns like the S&W J-frames, Taurus 85s and the SP101. There were the Colt D-frames back in the day like the detective special, but those were really an in-between size between the Smith J-frames and K-frames. It's the newer revolvers that are coming out as small-frame Six shooters, and they're more or less D-frame sized guns- the Taurus 856 (which is an 85 stretched to be more like a D-frame), the Kimber K6, and the new Colt Cobras. Now the SP101 is a five-shot but it's basically D-frame sized. There's no really good reason for Ruger to not do a six-shot 38 version of the SP101. They just hate us I guess.
>>64499081>g-string on buttLewd.
>>64496789If a revolver cylinder sealed the way the Nagant revolver does, does this fix that problem, or nah?
>>64499459No. The issue isn’t the gas seal, it’s that in a necked down cartridge the neck part expands a tiny amount as it’s fired, in a cylinder this pushes backwards, and if it gets enough force in that direction the brass sticks against the frame and the cylinder can’t spin. In straight wall cartridges they have a similar expansion but it’s mostly outward without much rearward force.
>>64499398I think you're both a bit off.Old snubbies were submit chopped down service revolvers. We're talking K frame size. They weren't exactly small. Smith created the I frame for 32, then eventually the J frame when 38 became the defacto service caliber because carrying a 2.5" model 10 wasn't all that different from casting a 4" model 10. They are them 5 shots because they had to be much smaller than a k frame for the juice to be worth the squeeze. I personally despise launching a 38 caliber bullet from a sub 16oz J frame revolver so I don't own one. I have 5 revolvers and they are all J frames. Four 32 h&r mag models and one 22lr model with a red dot like picrel. It's funny, the J frame is my favorite gun, but not THE j frame, as I hate the 38 models.

For the effort you'll put in you may as well just get it reamed and send it.
>>64502157I’d be game to just send it except I’m trying to recreate a wildcat for a contender barrel I found in a gun store and would like to keep below the factory pressures for 45-70 govt to avoid stretching the frame…. Also fwiw I’m trimming 7mm prc brass down to about 1.7 and loading a 480 or 510 gn .510 bullet in it…. Barrel was labeled “50 Alaskan mag” so it’s a little closer to the edge of safe possibilities to just full send without thinking it through…
>>64502174>50 AlaskanThis one?
>>64502217No, it’s not actually a 50 Alaskan. It’s a .534 chamber with no taper and would end up at cartridge length of 1.928, a case length of 1.608, bullet length of .970 with a 480 gn .510 diameter bullet. Case volume of 62 gns. It’s a lot shorter and smaller case diameter. Got a picture of 1 from an old magazine and it looks like they originally fireformed 375 H&H brass out for it. Seems to be something from back when messing with .500 and .510 variants was in vogue. Pic is modified trimmed brass vs an actual 50 Alaskan round.
>>64502252>labelled .50 Alaskan mag>is .50 Alaskan spl rimlessSome people really are too retarded to muck about with this stuff.Seems close enough that I'd use the .50 Alaskan or similar straight wall .510 model and just adjust for COAL and grains water as per usual. Especially since you're only trying to keep the pressure down, not loading nukes. A couple over the chrono will tell you if it's close enough with no real danger of anything bad happening. There doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary here.
>>64502286Far right. If I had to guess I’d say they kept the “Alaskan” part because they used a .510 bullet, and the “mag” came from 375 H&H mag brass which would have been common in Alaska at the time and looks like the likeliest belted case for conversion due to the .532 diameter belt, and how the round bells out above it where they fireformed it out.Running the numbers in GRT, keeping it at around 23000 should give me plenty of safety margin vs the 45-70 govt rounds that were intended for contender barrels, and still give me a 480 gn bullet doing about 1300 gps out of a 15 inch barrel with 50 ft/lbs of felt recoil. If it was a touch shorter I’d consider getting a short cylinder BFR chambered in it but it’s just a hair too long. Fun project from a really fun find.. figured if the barrel was a bust I’d just get a different contender barrel.. price was right.
>>64495109Because old snub nose revolvers were just full size revolvers with short barrels and new ones are usually smaller compact sized revolvers that are easier to carry.Dumbass.
>>64502440Can't go far wrong there and it'll get you some actual readings to work off. At the end of the day you've got a basically cylindrical column of propellant and any little variations are going to be utterly obliterated by the specific chamber and barrel you have and how well it was done - windage, etc.
