Stupid is as stupid does edition.

My Sordins battery connector is shitting out, so I need to know if there are any replacement/upgrade options for it? I've tried bending the clipazine several times.

How good are your soldering skills?

Pretty good. I went to school for electronics.

I was debating just throwing a 3.7V USB-C rechargeable battery in, using a Dremel to make a charge port, and sealing the whole cunt in place with RTV.

Is the OG battery dying or just the connectors? Any chance you can fit an 18650, 14400, or 10440 battery inside?

where's that one study from the fbi or some other federal establishment for gunshot wound lethality statistics? Like location of hit and caliber to chance of fatality. I'm trying to find it on google and all I get is academic paper slop on gun violence.
>>
Why are all these faggot pussy boomers on forums telling people to wait a minute between shots, blow down the barrel until no smoke comes out or shoving a wet patch down the barrel before reloading a muzzleloading black powder rifles? I've never in my life seen someone doing this with a muzzleloader and I sure as hell don't think they did this in any of the wars in which they were used

a cookoff from embers remaining in the breech while you're shoving a ball down the barrel that takes your fingers off just doesn't happen, right?
>>
>>64511424
old timey war muskets were made quickly with loose tolerances. This helped with fouling and pretty much couldn't cause a cookoff.
People also would use paper cartridges and toss them in with the ball as a wad n shit, nobody gave a fuck.

Pretty much all modern muzzleloaders are NOT smoothbore muskets, they're full on rifles. They're so tight you need leverage with a "starter pusher" to even pretend to start to shove your fucking ball in there, using a lubricated patch. You are using boutique specialty black powder designed to explode as quickly as possible. You aren't just grabbing packets of soggy gunpowder from your bag, and you're doing it over and over in order to have "fun" shooting at a piece of paper.

Sure, hunting rifles were a thing back in the day too, but they got one shot off, maybe at most a dozen, over the course of a day, not in a rapid fire range trip.

Of course, i assume that only applies to flintlocks with proper black powder. Percussion Cap rifles with off the shelf Pyrodex can go fuck off theres no chance of a cookoff with that shit.
>>
>>64511100
It's the negative battery clip for the first battery you put in. Doesn't seem to be an uncommon issue. I was gonna put an 18350 in it, if I could figure a good way to do it.

I'm about to into black powder guns finally

What's the level of risk of there still being an ember in the chamber as you pour in the next powder charge? Is there a minimum amount of time you wait before you load the next shot? Or does modern powder make that a non issue?
>>

Some hobby stores have battery holders of some sort that come pre-wired. Worst case there's some available for 3d printing and you can install it yourself.

1. Why are there threaded screw holes on the scalarworks LEAP 12 and 15
2. Does anybody make a mount to put anything there?

The only thing I found was from the patent page stating that you’re supposedly meant to have these two bolts that will push against the rail surface, whether that be for extra stability or something I’ve no clue and there’s no documentation from Scalarworks about that ever being a thing

Hey /k/, I'm writing a book about civilian who find himself involved in a war zone at some indeterminate time in the past. If a forward observer or some other soldier with a radio spotted a convoy of armored cars and unarmored trucks, and called in artillery on them, how quickly would it take from the guy making the call on the radio to the shells hitting the target? How much faster was it in the 1970s/80s as opposed to the 1910s (like the first world war)?

My Impact Sports are okay for hunting. Not the best when it comes to being able to tell exactly where game is via audio (my bare ears are way better) but usable. They're water resistant but I wouldn't leave them out in the rain; I have a couple times and I should probably crack them open to clean up the contacts, specifically the potentiometer. Did the same forgetting-them-in-the-rain shit with my last pair and they didn't appear to have any corrosion on the circuit board when they met an untimely end shattered into a million pieces (not my fault). Probably just needed some deoxit on the potentiometer to keep them running. Bought a second pair to replace the first.

>a belt that won't flex or sag when holding a fullsize
You're looking for steel cored gun belts and a good belt will always be relatively expensive, and will always flex and sag *eventually* no matter what.
I've had a 16-ounce (equates to 0.25 inch thick) steer leather belt for a few years now, a Hank's "the extreme".
Could always try to source leather and fittings and make one yourself.

Recent trip to the range gave me a nasty feed failure in my ar-15, the case got bent in at a 30 degree angle. It was the 2nd round, first didn't have a problem, and no other shot had any problem.
I did a full clean of the BCG the day before, and I cycled the action a dozen or so times when I was done oiling.
I run an H1 buffer on stock spring on a carbine gas ruger unit that is a good touch overgassed.
What could have caused that?
>>
Older IR MANPADs have that little canister of nitrogen to cool the sensor and if for whatever reason you don't fire it has to be replaced. Vehicle mounted versions have a small onboard compressor that feeds them via a circulation hose that goes in where the canister screws in so it can have quicker reaction time and you can have the sensor on for an extended period.

If you were using a handheld version to defend a site for an extended period is there any reason you couldn't hook it up to a small commercial compressor and nitrogen tank?

Well for one thing, in the First World War there really weren't radio operators like we have now. The only radio used in any kind of extensive manner were big towers at relay stations for communicating with ships at sea. On land, communication between the front and the rear was done by telephone, which meant stringing wire between the two points and keeping it intact when facing shit like days-long artillery bombardment.

What do you really need to clean a gun? Not like a detail strip where you oil every individual part, just a quick pass for fouling and the like?

I know they sell kits for particular kinds of guns, but I'm facing a potential situation where buying a bunch of those would be more than I really wanna drop.

>>
>>64515084
.45 is far from ideal but light bullet .45 Super loads are what you're looking for.
That's going to be spendy though. If you're planning on shooting it with any regularity you're going to want 185gr on top of a full case of Blue Dot/AA No.9, for heavier bullets you're looking at AA No.7/Lovex 37.1/good ol' Power Pistol. You can load that in ACP brass, it's a good use for small primer cases.
>>
>>64517746
Bore brushes are a consumable, so you're going to want a couple of the correct size for each bore and a rod to use them with. If it's a really quick once-over you can get away with a pull-through which frankly you can make yourself with a bit of paracord and a patch. Then you'll need whatever tools you need to get your guns apart as far as you want to take them, and a fuckin' oily rag. Mix up a batch of Ed's Red.
What the hell kind of retarded situation have you got yourself into where you need to do a shitty job of cleaning a lot of guns but you have no cleaning kit?

>>
>>64517746
I like cutting an x-acto knife shape on the end of Dollar Tree popsicle sticks (craft aisle). Gets the fouling out real easy even on silenced 22s and doesn't scratch the finish or polish and is even pretty gentle on paint. That and some Hoppe's, q-tip brand q-tips, some steel wool (number 1 or whatever), and maybe that Harbor Freight large cotton swab set. And maybe a pull-through bore cleaner rope with the metal brush built in. Then use your oil of choice to keep it rust-free.

Does anyone have links to digital copies of US field manuals for making storage/shipping crates in the field? I've found one, MIL-C-104 (Military Specification - Crates, Wood,
Lumber and Plywood, Sheathed, Nailed, and Bolted), but I know that many more from WWII through modern day have to exist out there as local WWII events have repro crates whether they're being made following official field manuals or even just reenactor's resources that are just reverse-engineered from measuring some original examples. Need to store some stuff and a crate would be a lot nicer than those shitty plastic totes. I started trying to do this on my own but going off known good plans would be a lot nicer as my idea fell apart quickly.

Wouldn't making a cavitated 7.62mm round they dropped the weight significantly (let's say down to 110ish gr or maybe a little less) accomplish the same thing as 6.8mm Fury? A lightened 7.62 projectile fired by the same loading for full weight would result in a higher velocity which would accomplish the goal of moar armorer killingness. It would also not require such pissin' hot loading, and it would be backwards compatible with existing 7.62 ammo stocks and speciality ammo types (tracer, incindiary).
Throw it in an AR-10 so the straight line recoil can eat some of the felt recoil, and that's just a better version of the M7 right?

I think what I may end up doing is copying a WWII ammo crate (ie. pic) and just using the end styles of my previous pic where you attach the ends (width) to the sides (length) with something like a 2x4 instead of dovetailing it. Makes life a lot easier. Really just want to get a box built to keep mice and bugs out. Maybe I can find a quick and dirty dovetail/finger joint method but I don't want to drag this project over days. If it's enough of a success I might make another for fur, possibly even out of cedar. Doesn't stop mice and bugs totally (I have an old military crate with a hole eaten through the top edge that must've taken mice months since the lid was likely in place) but it helps a lot and the warning you're going to need to do something is rather audible.

I do remember seeing the do/k/ument a couple times over the years but I couldn't tell you the list of field manuals off the top of my head. The only reason I asked about field manuals is that an old video popped up in my recommended that I watched a while ago (a guy wanted to make some mortar crates) and one of the comments mentioned a field manual for making crates. This is like third hand info (commenter wasn't in the military, his dad was IIRC) so maybe what I found was what his dad was talking about. MIL-C-104, I tried to read through it (and the others on the woodcrates website), but it is really just specifications to make your own custom crate and it's very very very dull to read through.
>>
>>64524712
I also came across this site so I'm getting closer to finding some kind of plans for copying crates. I might end up either copying something I already have or something I can measure at a local surplus store, stretching it vertical or horizontal if I have to.
https://www.questmasters.us/Crates.html
https://www.questmasters.us/Crates_Page_2.html
https://www.questmasters.us/Crates_Page_3.html
I think my luck may be best if I look for US WWII related sites rather than just anything. Reenactors are going to be a good source and WWII has just about the most interest and info out of any of the possible points of interest for a reenactor. However, maybe most of these reenactment groups are just measuring crates from their own collections or off friends and therefore the plans are not exactly readily available online.
>>
>>64524986
Crate specifications were in each of the relevant manuals. The one on ammo shipping had drawings for ammo crates for example. Crate drawings were also part of the TDPs.
If you know what kind of crate you want to build it would narrow the search down quite a bit.
>>
>>64525017
Problem is I'm more looking for a certain size of crate than anything else as I'm looking to store surplus clothes in it. 12"x18" and 25" tall would be just about perfect. Odd size but space gets taken up fast with clothes so I'd rather have a double tall crate than two on top of each other.

Yesterday I went to a shooting range and shot for the first time in my life. It was actually nice.
I shot with 9x18, 9x19, .357Mag and 12gauge.
I enjoyed the 9x19 (I believe Glock 17 Gen 4) the most.
Now, considering that shooting ranges that offer anything outside of that selection are 1:30 drive each direction, and are offering pistols only, should I spent the time driving or should I stick to the nearly available options for some time?
I mostly want to save time traveling if there wont be huge difference.
>>
>>64526548
nah, stay close.
focus on one type of weapon at a time.
If you like the Glock 17 keep practicing with that. Do that by itself for a few months and get your round count up practicing the basics. You'll be a better shooter than most in no time. After that branch out to different calibers or change it up to a rifle or something.
Shooting a ton of different calibers right off the bat is only going to make your skills take longer to develop.
>>
How do I shoot better when I'm naturally very shaky? I'm shooting more since I've set up a small place in my backyard but even using a .22lr from a rest at 50yd, I'm all over the center and my groups suck. I noticed the trigger was very heavy (brand new gun) and hard to pull quickly and smoothly when I got it lined up but the fact that I'm basically trying to time my pulls to when the sights finally float over the bullseye seems wrong.

Thanks, anon-kun.
If I want to get better, should I pay for instructor or should I just use the money for extra rounds?
>>
>>64526609
that entirely depends on how good the available instructor is and how much he charges.
i could on for hours about this and theres a few schools of thought.
if you shoot by yourself and teach yourself something stupid and then decide to get professional training later, its going to be harder to unlearn bad habits.
if you get a trainer first you can learn good habits but can also get a bad trainer and it costs more up front.
I personally never paid for a trainer and just self taught all the way but that might not be what you need/want.
I would focus on firing at least 1,000 rounds through ONE handgun like that Glock you mentioned just to get yourself comfortable with the gun, and I'd only do that after watching some universally liked professional shooter's youtube channel that covers all of the basics, how to pull the trigger, how to hold the gun, etc etc, then keeping that info at the forefront of your mind after each and every trigger pull.
Don't just start blasting either, take a lot of time between shots, focus heavily on what it is you are doing while you are doing it.
Doing that should put you miles ahead of your average retard and you can determine if a trainer is right for you.
>>
>>64526572
Don't drink coffee before shooting, don't drink a ton of caffiene, don't eat a ton of sugar, don't have low bloodsugar, and most important of all, shoot standing more. It sucks and it's taken me years to get to an acceptable level. I started seated on the ground and went to kneeling, seated from chair, shooting sticks sitting, shooting sticks kneeling, tripod standing, and I'm working on standing. I'm sure practicing having the rifle shouldered standing at home (such as during dry-fire practice) or even straight arm weight holding (straight out from body) can improve your arm strength and stamina. If you shoot handguns a lot I'm sure it's going to be a lot easier to go from that to standing with a rifle rather than going from sitting with rifle to standing with rifle. Also, don't yank the trigger, control your breathing and shoot on exhale. Slow your breathing as well. If you notice your groups worsen, put the gun down, go stretch, and relax. Easy to get in your head when your groups don't meet expectations. What rifle is it that it has a heavy trigger?

How come horizontal, top feeding mags aren't more common? I dont mean side loading like a Sten. The only one I can think of is the P90. The only reason I can think of is bullet sizes making it impractical for any rifles, but I feel like PCCs are underutilizing this
>>
>>64528999
the P90s mag only works because 5.7x28 is VERY straight. most ammo (pistols included) have tapered casings to aid with extraction, that's why most magazines curve.
>>
What are the downsides of consistently, constantly, and over-and-over again shooting 380 through a 9mm?
The bullet diameters are the same, would the bullet not going into the proper spot in the chamber eventually do damage? Or is it solely just annoying because you'd have to rack the gun each time?

Sometimes weird shit like that happens with no real reason. Could have got caught during feeding in a weird, unexpected way and vent like that, could have been the ejected brass bouncing in such a way as to disrupt the feeding. If your gun shot fine with no other issues the rest of the time then it's probably not a big issue. You may want to go up a buffer size depending on your gas length but it sounds like you're gun is otherwise fine.

Whatever is most comfortable. Most people will never see even obvious printing and once the novelty wears off, you won't carry an uncomfortable gun. I started with a p64 in appendix, but it sucks to shoot and was very uncomfortable to carry. Now I carry a g19 at 4 o'clock and 2 magpul 27 rounders at 8 o'clock, you can easily get away with bigger guns too. For what it's worth, I would never bother with a subcompact pistol, harder to draw, harder to aim, and much more felt recoil.

They're so straight that they have a polymer coating to aid extraction, that's why 5.7 is a pita to reload.

yes that is
because a bottleneck/shoulder is also tapered
tapering just means it narrows down
>>
>>64529173
The case can’t headspace on the mouth and still be hit by the firing pin, so you are counting on the extractor to hold the case to the breech face. This will put some level of additional wear on your extractor. Is it enough to matter? Depends on the gun, I’d guess, but I don’t really know.
>>
>>64530041
Not when discussing cartridges, taper refers to wall taper because that is extremely relevant when determining ease of extraction. A straighwall cartridge has to overcome friction for the entire extraction process, tapered walls disengage from the chamber almost immediately removing friction from te equation. The higher the taper, the more out-of-spec the chamber can be and still allow easy extraction. Bottlenecked cartridges exist for an entirely different reason that has nothing to do with extraction.

>you won't carry an uncomfortable gun
This is my main worry. I'd rather buy once, cry once.
>I would never bother with a subcompact pistol
See, I don't want a subcompact because I have really long hands. I could probably wrap my finger around the front of the barrel, which makes me feel uneasy. However, I feel like the subcompact would be the easiest/most comfortable to conceal.
>>
>>64532227
Carrying at 3-4 (or 8-9 for a lefty) is about as comfortable as it gets regardless of pistol size. I'm a 6'2" lanklet and appendix hurts everytime I sit down no matter how small the gun, at 4 I could carry a desert eagle without it bothering me standing, walking, bending, driving, etc. Don't worry about printing unless you happen to be somewhere where it could be a safety issue (basically just around ghetto blacks), even then people really don't notice. Find a pistol you like to shoot and then just carry it wherever is comfortable.

>I have long hands
Bro unless you have literal Alien fingers, it's going to be pretty fuckin hard to get a finger over the muzzle with any kind of remotely normal grip technique. I wear 2X Mechanix gloves and the fingers are still a tad short for me so I'm in a similar situation. The only guns I could do that with and it not be some sort of stupid awkward grip are my LCPII or Colt Junior. Anything remotely larger than those like a Bodyguard 2.0, G42/43, Hellcat, or P365 is not going to be an issue. If you're worried, do alot of draw and dry fire practice at home (you should do this anyway) until you feel 100% comfortable with your hand placement and grip. Only thing I'd steer you away from if you're seriously worried about it is a revolver since the cylinder gap flash can be an issue if your fingers or thumb are on the frame forward of your trigger finger.

In an AR-15 trigger group, how the fuck do you get the pin through the hammer? There's some sort of spring sticking up in the middle that blocks anything from going through.

I tried digging it out of the way with a pocketknife blade and all that happened was that the tip of the blade snapped off. :-/

Boobs unrelated.
>>
>>64534306
push it harder, it will go in. maybe use something to hit it.
>>
>>64534311
Tried that by pounding it with the side of the knife, no bueno. Maybe if I drive over it? Nah, it'd probably just puncture the tire.
>>
>>64534332

>>
>>64534306
>>64534332
Some very cheap FCG sets don’t have a bevel cut on both sides of the pins. So make sure you’re trying to push a beveled pin through and not a pin without a bevel.

If it’s still kicking your ass, use a smaller diameter punch as an assembly pin to help trip the retention spring over the hammer pin.

Overstabilized bullets will keep their nose pointed the same direction as the barrel (which is generally actually slightly "up" relative to your sights), but the ideal is that it follows the trajectory perfectly.

Probably something citrus based like citristrip or maybe there's a DIY version with citric acid powder. Solvents like acetone can do fun things like melt polymers or make them hazy (fucking acetone). Just an FYI for anyone else looking for similar, the Vortex Solo RT has a better exit pupil and weighs half as much, so it’s what I bought. It’s an 8x instead of a 10x.
>>
>>64541020
Didn't recommend anything because I don't know of a monocular with a reticle at all but my 8x (?) Vortex monocular w/ no reticle has been great. They throw a thick green TPU (?) cover over them so they're pretty nice and padded against damage as well. I use it to spot squirrels in trees (sometimes hard to tell if it's a squirrel or damage to trunk) and fox/coyote. Might want to get some paracord and put a ~18" long loop on it. Just enough to hang from your neck like a lanyard or loop the paracord loop through itself around a strap loop on your clothing, through a buttonhole, or maybe to your backpack strap. I tend to keep it in an open-top pouch or pocket up on my chest opposite the side I shoulder my rifle on.

PS: If the sun is fucking up your view, use two hands and with your offhand (forward hand), shade over the top just in front of the front of the lens like a hat brim would shade your eyes. This gets rid of that tannish-yellow hazy blur effect you sometimes get with optics looking towards the direction of the sun. I also tend to use my monocular, focus it, look, then when done, I turn the focus ring all the way down until it's at minimum, then give it a slight twist the other way (you'll learn how much with experience) to turn the focus to about 20-30yds. Makes it a little quicker to focus as most things I want to focus on are max 100yds and if they're over that, I usually have a lot of time to get to that further distance.

The bullet actually creates lift when flying tip up, but it also creates way more drag. So it generally outperforms the drop expectation at shorter ranges, but slows down enough that it will quickly perform less well than it should against your predicted BC, and it will go transonic way earlier than you expect. It also will be less accurate than it should be at all ranges.

But it’s hard to overstabilize a bullet that is good at long range, so most people don’t ever notice, because it’s happening to them with low BC bullets that they don’t expect to perform well anyways.

I need to make a deadblow weight for a bolt. What's the optimal tungsten material to use? I can get powdered tungsten, or ball bearings tungsten, or some sort of chopped-up scrap tungsten. I'm leaning toward the chopped-up scrap stuff, it's not any cheaper but it intuitively feels like it would have better movement characteristics than the spheres or the dust, simply because it's irregular and has lots of irregular voids.

I fell down this rabbit hole because I have a fast twist .300 Win Mag and I was trying to get a 65 grain .300 win mag load to be useful for swatting squirrels and grouse without changing the rifle’s zero from my 220 grain elk load (.323 pistol bullet FMJs swaged to .309). At 2800 fps, if I got it pretty much where it needed to be at 50 yards, it was like 3 inches high at 100 yards, and the math just didn’t make sense, since I was velocity matching with a much worse BC bullet, and the accuracy was much worse than I expected. I ended up downloading to 2300 fps to get the crossover right and get my 100 yard accuracy acceptable. It’s still less accurate than the 220 grain VLDs but it’s at least good enough for small game at shortish ranges.

The trigger is pretty close to the original P01 trigger. It's not as smooth as the S2/S2compact triggers, but at least it's completely drop safe and it has a decocker, that I personally call smallcocker.
The firing pin is fine, no need to meddle with it.
Honestly if you're not afraid of decocking your gun "manually", I'd rather choose the compact (or the full size for home defense or range shooting), it's nicer overall. As long as you keep the same firing pin spring, it should be drop safe too. Just carry it half cocked if you're paranoid.

Sounds like you're going to have to try and find something similar at a local hardware store using their little thread/size checker display and an original screw. Then maybe go on McMaster-Carr and see if you can find something similar now that you know the right thread pitch, etc. They, if anyone, should have something at least much closer in design and finish, and if nothing else, you at least have something to hold you over from the hardware store in the meantime.

>>
>>64552054
>Why is pump-action seemingly reserved for shotguns and maybe a few .22s?
The old designs, like you see used in rimfire or pistol caliber slide action rifles aren't very good for high pressure rounds with lots of bolt thrust. Designs that work better with high pressure high bolt thrust calibers are more complicated than competing bolt action rifles, and all the heavy jangling pendulums in the action mean that they couldn't match the accuracy of the bolt action or semi automatic rifles that they competed against, so you get a hard recoiling, expensive, inaccurate rifle for the benefit of a bit of speed compared to a bolt action and no benefit compared to a semi automatic.

People did try to make it a thing though; John Pederson made a pump action that worked for typical lever action cartridges, that was sold as the Remington Model 14 and later 141, and that was succeeded by the L. Ray Crittendon and William Gail desiged Model 760 family with box mags and common spitzer bullet bolt action rifle calibers in 1952 and that family of rifles lasted until the 7600 was discontinued during Remington's bankruptcy in 2020. But they weren't very popular outside of places where you weren't allowed to hunt with semi-auto rifles.
Notably, a 760 in .30-06 was used to assassinate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Maybe all the ones I shot were just bad examples, but I thought that .30-06 was a brutal motherfucker of a cartridge until I had the chance to fire a M1 Garand for the first time, because the 760 that was my first introduction to the cartridge was thoroughly unpleasant in action, recoil, and performance, and every one I've picked up since has reinforced that impression.

Anon, I know this has been asked many times on the internet over the past few decades, and I think I figured it out for you.
I think it stands for “Fine manufacturing “ “Inc” “Michigan “

Fine Manufacturing Inc. has CAGE code of 0SAR6 ( note that zero has a slash to distinguish it from the letter O). Their current location is in South Hackensack New Jersey, but in 1996 they were incorporated in Michigan and later dissolved in July 2000.
https://michigan-company.com/co/fine-manufacturing-inc
Evidence they were involved in manufacturing magazines (in 1996) for the USG is linked to this article, where there was some dispute on their ability to make plastic followers to the US spec.

Mossberg made bolt action shotguns for many years, but discontinued them in the 60s. Now you can get them from Savage and Browning. The Mossbergs were smoothbore, and while I know that Savage has had smoothbore options for their bolt action shotguns, I don't know if they do currently, and I think the Brownings are rifled only.

The Mossbergs were fine, but a bolt action is harder to get a fast followup with than a pump action or a double, so they weren't popular compared to slide actions, the big advantage was that they were cheap. to manufacture. I have a Mossberg 195, and I don't shoot it much, but if I want to disrespect someone when trap shooting, I'll bring it instead of my double.

Been there, done that, even LE that you would assume would be sympathetic will take statements out of context, or recite them in a different intonation that conveys a different message and jam you up.

I really only have a hint for the LPVO part; maybe you'd like a long eye relief scope where you mount it on the barrel at some point. They have such a long eye relief as to be used on pistols or on something like the Steyr Scout. But also what the FUCK is that spotting scope seriously. Sounds likeit uses the tech from one of those funky peepholes used in stockrooms for the rear security doors. Apparently called a "door viewer" or something similar. Really nice, wish they were more common in home use. Might still want a peep for better viewing but nice for quick glances. Viewable from a retardedly large angle, easily over 90 degrees, and with no real "eye relief"; the picture is basically just projected on the screen with ZERO electronics involved. All optical.

it drank in light but had shitty image quality since lol late victorian tech. and to give you all lols, let me tell you how anon started a family war BEFORE thanksgiving by asking my cousin if he knew who had the scope since his dad had it. he says good question lets call my sisters to ask.

Should I buy ammo or AR parts? I guess I dont *need* the parts but I would like to upgrade some things, like getting a better buffer spring, weight, new foregrip, and these things are like to go on sale. But I do need ammo since I honestly dont have much, though I dont think ammo typical gets sales except on PSA which I dont like to buy from
>>
What stupid shit should I build with a bare ar15 lower? I already have the stereotypical scary black rifle, was looking at a 300blk "blaster pistol" build but I'm not super keen on the idea of expensive ass ammo.
>>

>better buffer spring, weight
Most "upgrades" for the working guts of your rifle aren't really for upgrading but for tuning your rifle if you're looking to make it do nonstandard things like subsonics, suppressors, full auto/FRT, etc, and even then it still might work fine. For a basic bitch AR-15 the stock recoil setup will work for anything normal.
If you're gonna upgrade start with things that will immediately improve your shooting experience like magnified optics or a new trigger or yeah a new foregrip.
And get some ammo, even if it's slightly overpriced. Ammo is always good to have.

That's definitely a your ffl question. I used to tell my FFL after I won/bought something on GB but now they just call when it comes in. Telling them on a bid and not a win is peak autismo, stop that.
GB makes it piss easy to handle transfers provided the seller and receiver's FFL are both in the system.

My heart always says "save for that upgrade you really want and buy it", brain knows I ALWAYS skimp on buying ammo and really need to buy more, probably at nearly twice the rate (with a soft cap of some arbitrary amount of rounds). I've never been mad at myself for buying ammo months ago. I HAVE been mad at myself for not buying ammo and deer season comes around and every caliber under the sun except 22LR is nearly picked clean at even the large chain stores around me because people realized their guns still exist or something.

At this time of year, upgrading isn't a bad idea though, if parts go on pretty good sales. Maybe pick up the most expensive part you want when it goes on sale and buy some ammo as well.
>ammo sources
ammoseek. Use it and keep track of the prices of your preferred calibers and even specific loadings by companies and buy when low. Downside is you're easily ordering $100-200 of ammo at a time to make shipping worth it (IMO) but the savings are worth it. It can only be a PITA when you'd really like to buy 250rds of 5.56, 300 9mm, and 500 22LR because IME either the site that has your 5.56 doesn't have your preferred 22LR or it's a little more expensive than I want to go (knowing there's 15 sites cheaper than them).

>>64558965
I really had no clue what to recommend and I don't think an ultralight 22LR makes any sense on an AR but it jogged a memory. I've wanted to build a dedicated (22LR only barrel) M16A1 upper for quite some time now. Finding a 20" 22LR only barrel for an AR is not easy though. Everyone makes 16" barrels. But having a silenced 20" would be dumb fun.

No stores around? 3-in-1 could work in a pinch. Or baby (mineral) oil. That stuff is a bitch to get out of wood, though, so keep it far away from wood. For some reason I think baby oil is worse with wood than pure mineral oil. If you need grease, most car/machinery greases work if you have any spare. Ditto car oils, if you have any remnants in the garage. If you're really desperate for grease, vaseline can protect against rust as it's just petroleum jelly. Better rust protectant might be Bag Balm if you have it; basically has two ingredients: petroleum jelly and lanolin, which is really good for a natural rust preventative. Has a slight scent (naturally, no perfumes) but not much.

I have squirrels infesting my house to the point that i can hear the red squirrels, flying squirrels and bats having territorial fights inside my roof. I can actually tell when the females are giving birth, they make a weird chirping squawk. I'm at the point where i can get them and the rodents to eat out of my hand. I can kill them anytime i want, i have a Crossman .22 Air pistol and a hand crossbow that i regularly use to kill grouse. I can slaughter them any time i wish, killing them isn't the issue.

The thing is, there's voles, shrews and at least one endangered species (a rare Lemming of all things) in there. I've thought about getting a cat but that is just indiscriminate murder and cats don't last long where i live, Owls take them.

So what does /k/ think? Do i just accept the squirrels, bats and random rodents as pets or do i murder them with a airgun and a cat?.

I know all the ways to kill them, the easy way is a 5 gallon bucket with a string on top of it and peanut butter. I leave a stick in my bathtub so they can climb out and not drown.

I'm just on the fence about killing them or getting a cat, they don't really bother me and they are turning into quasi pets. I know it isn't a normal thing but they don't really bother me, why should i kill them if they do no harm?
>>
>>64570356
You can put up a bat house nearby to encourage the bats to move there and out of your roof. Bats make good neighbors since they eat bugs and the guano makes good fertilizer.
https://www.batcon.org/about-bats/bat-house-guidelines/
>>
>>64570416
I know all about bat houses, i make them as a hobby. My dumb ass used strapping to put metal roofing over a tiny cabin that had a previously existing tar shingle roof so there is this 3/4th inch space that every small mammal within a mile likes to live in. Also the walls are overbuilt pine planks and it's in northern Maine.

The only way i can win this fight is a few cats and with them there is a third party to this conflict; i have a family of Great Horned Owls on my property. They kill around 25% of any domestic birds like chickens or ducks every six months, i have no doubt that they will kill house cats as well.
>>
>>64570481
>>64570416
I'll try to dig out a photo of it, when the owls kill a small animal you don't even know what you are looking at. It looks like someone shoved a stick of dynamite up their ass, it's just tiny pieces that are scattered everywhere.

I'd get cats without hesitation i just don't want them to get murdered by owls or Bald Eagles which are also a issue.
>>
>>64570409
Don't get cats, especially if you can't control them. They'll fuck around and kill other wildlife. I hate people with outdoor cats so much.
>estimated 1-4billion birds killed a year
>estimated 6-22 billion small mammals killed a year
>>
>>64570566
I have two barns, if i got cats they would quickly turn into a colony of barn cats i.e a hive of bird murder. I'm aware of the issues since any cats i got couldn't be spayed or neutered as they would need to be a self sustaining population.

The only way it would work is if i turned the underside of my primary cabin into a feral cat colony. That would work, they would be just fine and they would propagate without any serious issues if shepherded them a bit.

You know the problem, once they fix my problem it's a self sustaining population of feral cats which are one of the most murderous and ecologically destabilizing things in existence.

>So what does /k/ think?
Traps + Fix your roof so there's no holes for the critters to get in.
Goodnature CO2 powered traps are self-resetting and effective on squirrels. Place them correctly and you can target only squirrels/flying squirrels, the voles and the lemmings won't be able to get to the trap. If you want something less expensive I really like Koro, these not self-resetting but they're plenty powerful enough to take a squirrel humanely. Again, design your set so they're in a place the squirrels can access but the lemmings won't go.

As for the cats, I'm not convinced the owls are that big of a risk. There are plenty of great horned owls where I live, I often see them perching in a dead tree that's less than 100 yards from my home. They haven't bothered my cats. But that said, the cats will absolutely go after voles, lemmings, etc, probably more than the squirrels. My cats chase the local fox squirrels but they almost never catch one. They are quite successful at catching rabbits though, even fully grown ones. They do catch birds from time to time but it's nearly always starlings, which happen to be invasive in my area so I'm totally cool with that.
Bald eagles prefer to eat fish and scavenge carrion. They're capable of taking a cat but they probably won't.

>>64570481
Once you get the animals out you need to close off that gap. Cover it with hardware cloth, stuff steel wool in it, do something that allows air to flow through there but blocks the animals getting in.

>>64570667
You may not need a self-sustaining population. Even one lazy-ass cat lounging around is useful because a lot of rodents will NOPE the fuck out of there the moment they smell the cat's presence.
>>
>>64570409
You should kill them because having rodents infest your roof is bad. Shitting all over the place, chewing through insulation, making holes in the walls, etc.

>>

It depends on the type of rail and cover. The ones for pic rails are used to make them more comfortable to grip and less likely to snag on shit. If you're wearing gloves then the comfort thing doesn't matter much. The ones for kemod/mlok, like "railscales", etc, can provide better grip.

And of course they're jewelry so your gun looks better when you show it off on social media

>I'm not convinced the owls are that big of a risk.

I've lost a dozen chickens and a fucking baby goat to one of them. The goat really pissed me off because that afternoon i was waving around a 1960's Sears 10ga H&R bolt action goose cannon warding off a bald eagle. It took one of my chickens instead.

I could have gotten it but i figured there was a special place in hell for people who used the bird equivalent of an artillery piece on a Bald Eagle while wearing a MAGA hat so i let it go.

>they do no harm?
Because they do plenty of harm, you’re just not noticing it yet. Cats are kinda shit at controlling squirrels and rats though. Good outbuilding hygiene (don’t leave things in piles, don’t put things right next to walls, use rodent proof storage for anything that they might eat or make a nest out of, etc etc), repairing damage, using wire mesh or steel wool to make chew proof barriers, and using traps and repellents is the right way to handle them. All poisons that don’t eventually end up in your well water and making you sick are poisons they can adapt to. So if you rely on poisons, not only do you need to worry about bycatch, but you also need to rotate what you’re using as they adapt to it.

Clean up and fix up your buildings, put out some bucket traps, collect tails to send to Mepps for credit towards new fishing lures, and continue to enjoy birdwatching.
>>
>>64570481
Any place a rodent can go that a thrown rock can’t get them out, a cat can’t get them out either. You need weasels or to put quarter inch galvanized mesh at all the entry points but one and then smoke them out. Once they’re out, cover that last entry point.

What is a good gunsafe? Sure there are the cheap thin gauge steel ones primarily to prevent little jimmy from fucking around and finding out, but when you get into more expensive safes how do you actually find a quality one? The market is flooded with garbage safe manufacturers that
>Basically lie on fire safety ratings
>Basically lie on waterproof ratings
>Have digital keypads that are laughably easy to open
>Have shitty hinges or latches that quickly break or compromise water/fire safety
And even doing any online research is annoying in current year, everything is an AI written slop article with amazon affiliate links to garbage.

I primarily want a gun safe that is actually fire, water proof, that will allow me to store guns out of a case and with a fan and dehumidifier packets inside AND the door hinges and latches won't fail in a year. What is a good one in current year?
