Monocular or binos? Inb4 durr hurr just look through your rifle optic dumdum. - I am armed with shuriken so no optic.

Depends on your needs. For static observation, binos are superior because of their combined FOV. A monocular is more compact and works best if you need magnification to PID targets while orienteering through the mountains of Virginia.

If you have 1 eye or strong eye dominance, go for the monocular anyway.

NV or thermal? Purpose? Some you can use hand held, helmet mounted, AND rifle mounted. So look at all the options and decide what best meets your needs.

Mono is 1/2 the weight. A sonic ear would be preferred anyway.

Get the vortex with the ranging reticle.

I picked up a Vortex Solo RT this year. I wanted a ranging reticle and I valued light weight over FOV. so I went Monocular instead of binocular. But if you're not humping it, the only reason to go for a mono over a bino is price.

I like that little 8x Vortex monocular that you used for your OP pic. Doesn't have a super short eye relief so it can be used with or without (sun)glasses. If it's too short without wearing them, the little eye cup unscrews and pulls out into a detent to stay extended to give you something to rest against.

A what now?

Put an optic on your shuriken

Well, in really static observation, where you might need high magnification (20-60x, for instance), single-lens devices regain utility. But that's only if you wanna have a forearm-sized optic and observe something really closely, or bullet drop. You'll still need binocs for more general eyeball-sweeping, to spot what you wanna bother fiddling the real zoom onto.

I recently bought pic rel. Really nice. But looking through monocular for a long time makes your eye tired.
