>>64576499Three main reason>incompetent commandNot necessarily maliciously so. But the general in charge, Dukhanov, had only been a minor officer before and was an instructor in Leningrad before being promoted to field an entire army group. To go from teaching classes to junior officers, to being a field general, is obviously scope and job creep and learning in the field is typically going to come with a degree of trial and error. >badly trained troopsThe men themselves were incompetent, and it again wasn't exactly their fault. They simply weren't trained in how to wage the kind of war the Soviet higher ups wanted to. They had poor inter-army cooperation and mostly scripted training exercises to please political appointees. Little was done to provide real actual OpFor training, it was to show how great and good and perfect the army already was. Again, learning in the field, especially when you have been trained wrong as a joke, is going to be a bumpy ride. >competent defendersUnlike the Soviets, the Finns were generally competent. They were highly motivated, adapted to the environment, and well led. Their plans weren't perfect and their general fighting capability was limited, but when one guy shows up to a debate with the right idea but no evidence and having not rehearsed at all, and another guy shows up with some evidence and truths even if he's overall wrong, he's going to utterly clown on the guy who's right until that guy goes home, prepares, and comes back with a realistic idea of what the hell he should be doing. Which is why the Soviets ultimately "won," and perhaps also why they survived the Germans. Had they not launched the Winter War and gotten so terribly creamed, the reorganization and changing of training and tactics may not have begun in time. They very well may have been a house of cards without first getting their teeth kicked out by the Finns.

>>64576597>The russ had tanks Which had only a two weeks' supply of fuel because the campaign was expected to be short. They also didn't have good low-temperature lubricants so they had to run the engines constantly to keep everything from freezing which had a significant effect on fuel consumption. Most Russian armor wasn't disabled by enemy action it simply ran out of fuel and became useless.
