Aside from one bougie range in a posh suburb that has a fancy HVAC system, I can't think of any examples of gun people expressing an interest in reducing their own personal lead exposure or the dangers they cause to others. It's mostly coming from the eco hippie preservationist factions. Why do I end up feeling like a hypochondriac when I wipe everything down with D-wipes and segregate my range clothes?
>>

Lead is no joke. I keep a few of these in my range bag. Most people don't worry about lead exposure because they only shoot their guns a couple times a year, if you're taking this seriously and shoot with any frequency at all, you oughta grab these.

It isnt just you, people in general have a hard time conceptualizing long term damage, whether its from lead, fatty liver or welding without a respirator. You taking that little bit of time to get rid of lead is the difference between you being able to tell your grandkids stories or falling for Indian scammers when your 70.
>>
>>65470723
Isn't lead exposure at ranges mostly from breathing it in?
>>
>>65470756
That's what the vents are trying to mitigate. Gotta do your part and wipe your hands/forearms and face after shooting too, if you're prudent. Maybe even do an OP and throw them clothes into their own hamper. Not a terrible ask considering the long term damage of carelessness seen in any waterbrained boomer.
>>
Consider stamp collecting, safer
>>
>>65470796
spotted the water brained boomer!
>>
>>65470715
Because you are a hypochondriac
Just shoot outside
Urbanites who cant do that deserve lead poisoning for being urbanites
>>
>>65470715
>I can't think of any examples of gun people expressing an interest in reducing their own personal lead exposure or the dangers they cause to others. It's mostly coming from the eco hippie preservationist factions
Both Lucas Botkin and Garand Thumb made videos about lead exposure.
>>
Why don't they just make guns that don't give you brain damage, are they stupid?
>>
>>65470715
>Bougie range in a posh suburb
Are you talking about a certain new england state, where the range is in the northern part of the state? They even have lead off soap in the bathrooms.

Anyway regardless, you should all have lead off at home to wash your hands after cleaning and fiddling with your guns. Ideally washing or wiping down after shooting too.
>>
>>65470832
>Lucas Botkin
>Garand Thumb
Even more relevant, miculek has talked about lead exposure and clean up in one of his videos
>>
just shoot non-lead ammo?
>>
Im already fucked from eating lead paint chips growing up in a 150 year old house
I want to accelerate it atp. Im fine being some slack jawed retard who stares at the wall when im old. I dont really have a life to lose in the first place
>>
>>65471085
>when im old
>>
>>65470715
Just :
>wash your hands after shooting or cleaning your firearm
>don't leave exposed food or drinks when shooting
>don't wash your gun cleaning equipment (rags, bore snakes, mats...) in the same washing machine as your laundry
And you'll be fine. I wouldn't worry unless you're an RSO who spends 5 days a week in an indoor range.
>>
>>65470715
It's a non-issue if you shoot outdoors and wash your hands after cleaning and shooting your guns.
>but I only have access to indoor ranges
I don't know how you enjoy guns in this case, but okay
>>
>>65471155
You think your outdoor bay has no lead dust in the ground getting all over your shoes tracking into your car and home?

Lmao. Lol even.
>>
>>65471155
My range has both indoor and outdoor shooting and I really don't notice any difference between the two, I don't get what you nogs are on about with outdoors being better
>>
>>65471155
>>65471387
Forgot to say no RSOs for either but the indoor you can't shoot rifles or any pistol calibers bigger than a 38 special, that I take outside just because I have to
>>
>>65471387
Ventilation is the main thing. If the indoor range has fuckall ventilation, you're fucking yourself pretty badly breathing all those fumes in.
>>
>>65471397
The indoor has a robust ventilation system, it's a fancy members only range hence no range jannies
>>
>>65471117
This. The only thing I'd add is that if you handload, strongly consider wet tumbling your brass. Dry tumbling as a source of airborne lead concerns me, although it's probably fine if you decap the brass before tumbling and/or tumble outside.
>t. spent two years as an indoor/outdoor rso
>only time in my life I ever had elevated lead levels
>>
>>65470715
>I can't think of any examples of gun people
The overwhelming majority of guntoobers exclusively shoot at outdoor ranges because they know how much lead exposure happens in indoor ranges.
>>
>>65470715
Its crazy that disregarding anyone who uses the word "bougie" 100% improves your life and has 0 downsides. Its a 0 risk 100% foolproof faggot filter
>>
>>65471400
Then you got a good one there
>>
>>65471491
I'm pretty sure even with ideal ventilation you would have had high lead levels just from the constant exposure to lead from shooters + if you did any range upkeep (if someone is going downrange on a range they need full PPE)
>>
>>65470715
You never got an itchy nose, head fog, or skin sensitivity? A heavy range day causes immediate effects unless your baseline is already fucked.

The world may never know, OP.
>>
>>65471846

Nope, some have even explicitly stated they avoid indoor ranges to avoid lead, for example Colion Noir, Massad Ayoob, Brandon Herrera, Garand Thumb, etc.
>>
>>65471890
>Colion Noir, Massad Ayoob, Brandon Herrera, Garand Thumb, etc
You may have well said Dr. Seuss and Buggs Bunny.
>>
>>65470715
I limit my indoor shooting and buy d-lead soap by the gallon, jared af did a video on his lead levels, but it doesn't get talked about much. But most people perceive any mention of it as anti gun propaganda.
>>
>>65471852
>>65470723
Isn't that d-lead shit mostly and sham and useless in terms of lead chilation?
>>
>>65470756
ideally, but there's always gonna be people who eat lead because they don't believe in this shit
>>
>>65470715
you do understand that lead pipes haven't been used in over 100 years right?
>>
>>65471491
Hey anon, probably a dumb question, but when shoot, I typically shoot (quite literally I’m not even joking) like 5-10 rounds of 9mm at a time. Last time I shot was a few weeks ago. So say I shoot that minimal amount once every couple to a few weeks, but I like to hold my gun and handle it. Should I have anything to worry about if I shoot that little? Outdoors at that on my own property?
>>
It's so sad that lead and asbestos are good for making so many different things, but they slowly kill you.
I've thought about using a dedicated long coat and a pair of gloves for maximum larping while also keeping lead away from my skin. Sometimes I wonder if a mask could complete the larp and save my brain.
>>
>>65470756
Not really. Lead exposure happens in 3 ways - inhalation, ingestion, and through skin. These exhibit both cumulative and individual effects. Cutaneous lead exposure can actually be the more nasty type until you get to high dosages.
>>65472220
NTA but it sounds like you're not shooting remotely enough to be loading your own ammunition, as in assembling the rounds yourself from reused brass - that's where the highest risk lies and it's what anon was talking about. Now, simply loading factory boxed ammo into magazines CAN cause dangerous lead exposure, but only at far greater levels than what you shoot.

Still, I'm not a frequent shooter either, and I still load my mags with gloves on. Just saying.
>>
>>65472226
Oh sorry anon. I meant to (You) the range officer guy.

D lead claims to use specific chelating agents. I use leadoff, their formula is licensed from the NIH and removes lead well

get a different hobby, shooting is not it for hypochondriacs
>>
None of the outdoor ranges near me allow rapid fire, frt, or full auto.
>>
>>65471081
most of the lead exposure from shooting is from the primers, which use lead styphnate. The lead in bullets and shot is basically harmless unless you are a bird and eat it, because it is not a gas and even if it is in the air after it hits something, it isn't in the air for very long. (and usually a hundred feet or so away from you, even at an indoor range)

note that in terms of toxicity to human life, lead styphnate is actually a considerable step up from what they used in older primers, mercury fulminate.
>>
>>65472225
I used to wear a respirator while shooting at the indoor range, and the other benefit is that because your mouth and nose are connected to your ears, it gives you a bit of a decibel reduction
>>
>>65473003
LOL
>>
are people in this thread just being retarded or is wearing a mask and gloves and using dedicated lead soap what I'm supposed to be doing?
>>
>>65474383
yes we are retards, yes you should be using chelating soap after shooting, no you should not eat, drink or smoke while you shoot. you can get your lead levels tested to see if you want to wear a mask or take other more extreme countermeasures.
>>
I don’t shoot indoors. I need to get more dlead. I don’t religiously use it nor do I change my clothes from the range sometimes. I’ve considering switching over completely to lead free ammunition for the guns I shoot regularly.
>>
>>65474383
Hypochondriacs are not to be emulated. You have to shoot an absurd amount to get meaningful lead buildup in your system. If you shoot indoors, make sure there's ventilation and, regardless of the range, wash your hands after (no, you don't need fancy specialty for this either).

That's it. Anything else is delusion.
>>
>>65471209
Do you still wear an n95 to protect yourself from covid?
>>
>>65474383
No, those guys are neurotic paranoid old women. Men with anxiety levels that high are incredibly low-T and cannot be taken any more seriously than a woman
>>
Is lead free ammo going away? I just realized CCI's copper-22 got discontinued, along with every other 22lr. Would have stocked up had I noticed. What's the next cheapest common caliber with multiple lead free options?
>>
>>65476189
Just wear a full tyvex suit when you shoot. And never take it off, there is lead everywhere at all times, you must remain vigilant. You cannot allow yourself to relax for even a moment, a moment is all it takes for lead to ruin your life.
>>
>>65476189
many federal offerings use lead free primers and coated bullets
https://www.federalpremium.com/handgun/syntech/

there isn't much lead free .22 around because it's all very inaccurate and expensive so no one buys it.
>>
>>65476189
are you seriously shooting lead free .22?
>>
>>65476316
There are a lot of compromises for lead free 22, but it was the gun I shot the most, especially indoors. It was the only round that made sense to switch.
