Hey /k/, I’m a game developer working on a sci-fi future-soldier type game, and I’d like to implement some of the gear I see soldiers using.I’ve noticed a lot of setups with an eyepiece and helmet-mounted camera/lens. The exact setup doesn’t matter much for this question:>What would you want the eyepiece to do?>What would you want the camera/lens to do? It could even face backward and act as a rear-view camera.
>>65475738
>>65475738Step 1 is getting a map and then marking everyone on it to minimize confusion, so people know where they are in relation to each other, can call out where the enemy is, and simply don't get lost while travelingStep 2 is better sensors (seeing in the dark and some modest magnification, you don't really need more than x4 desu)Step 3 is linking them to your weapons to reduce weight and speed up aimingThose are the traditional 3 military goals from most to least important. You can add other tricks, but those are the bread and butter demands.
>>65475738What you'd want ideally already exists in games - the ability to tag positions for other people in your unit, compass headings that point them out if they aren't in your field of vision, the ability to bring up a map, etc. Just seamless silent communication. If you had an enclosed helmet with cameras for vision you could actually have solid protection for your soldier's faces and eyeballs. Then at that point you can just have them also be therms and nods.
>>65475738Is this a roundabout way for a defense contractor to get genuine responses because people would troll a defense contractor if he asked it for irl purposes?
>>65475738Dear game-dev-kun;In real life? Be concise, be lightweight. Probably laser flashed into the retina for rapid reading, the component being just a small item.in an Aesthetic sense? Provide a glow that flickers and flashes different as data flys by, the glow on the characters skin, close ups of a reflection on the iris. NVG green, or moody blue. full spectrum color can work too, but its hard to pull off. Industiral amber/ reds are charming too.The eyepiece could be semi mobile, flipping up and down, or even sliding. Different units with different animations as the game progresses or unlocks are found would be pleasurable. Or just for different characters.the camera. On the low end its gotta be visually interesting, but not stupid. Popping up, moving around, cool. A retro style iris that expands and constricts with a moving, an auto zoom that moves the assembly in and out.----Mechanically, like what would it do for the game?Variable hud, allowing for dynamic amounts of augmented reality based on situational need. Why would I see my vitals if im not hurt, stressed from running, etc. Same with bullet count, available weapons, map, whatever.Camera? Multiple modes that are interesting. Lidar, time of flight sensor (pure passive), dedicated spectral views, synthetic aperture millimeter wave radar, (its all just filters from the programming standpoint).gimmicks. Maybe detachable. The issue is anon, your question is honest, but not well formed and without context. During requirements extraction you have to guide your customer.
>>65475738The camera(s) could be used to detect enemy fire and fix said position, relaying the information to the eyepiece. A map is an obvious choice for said eyepiece, which could show the positions of both friendly forces and suspected (or confirmed) enemy positions. This could be done real time without the map, overlaying enemies with a marker, and highlighting friendly positions. A rear facing camera is a decent idea, albeit somewhat redundant with complex situational data being relayed via the battle-net, enemies shouldn't be able to get behind you unless some real fuckery happens. Realtime order updates is an obvious addition, as is ammunition counters. A vitality sensor is actually something I wouldn't recommend, not for the individual soldier to look at anyways, as showing your own heartrate and shit could make soldiers nervous and too self-conscious, compromising their combat ability. Showing the status of squadmates is a good idea though. Ideally the eyepiece wouldnt project much light, as it could give away positions. It shouldn't be overly busy, and having the map always displayed IMO would be a big no-no, although a snippet of the map in the corner would be okay. The colors chosen shouldn't ruin natural night vision, and compatibility with actual NVGs would be easy to implement, as the goggles themselves could be configured to relay the same information the eyepiece itself could convey. It should be a complement to the soldier, not necessarily an essential piece of equipment, because at the end of the day a smartphone-like terminal could convey the same information without as much complexity.
>>65475738if you want a baseline just look at what the old objective force/future force/net warrior/etc stuff was already trying to dograw basically did this too
I feel like videogames already include a lot of the displayed elements that soldiers wouldn't mind having, and then a little more handhold-y because players are more likely to be absentminded. If they've got a big suit of cool armor then you probably want the stuff that keeps track of all that. Heat, thrusters, locational damage maybe. Depends on how you're using it. High macs simulator has a pretty neat command camera setting where you can direct allies through the map and see through their cameras. I miss exocorps.
>>65476047You haven't answer op yet.
Future soilder thread?
Is there any extensive research on AR stuff everyone tried to do at one point? I suspect this shit is flopped for a reason
>>65478078>>65478078I mean what do you do beyond highlight targets, objects "press e to pickup" "f for respect"
>>65477623I have no answer to give OP because I distrust him
>>65475738Threat detection. Mark projectiles and track how many have been received. Track mortar rounds and show their impact points. Receive and warn of potentially hostile signals like infrared lasers and rangefinders. Show radio wave signal strength for various purposes. Link with UAVs and other recon platforms. Basically everything you get in ghost recon but with more nerd stuff.
>>65478146I like it when games have target movement prediction circles and display the arc of your fire. That's neat.
>>65475738When it comes to sci-fi, I find it helps to use actual tech and research rather than delving directly into magictech or vaporware. The closer it is to something real the more authentic and interesting it is. If you want fantasy for the cool factor, it's Moreso an athetotic choice via your personal tastes.Right now there is a lot of development in the eye ware and camera field. For the head mounted eye piece, there are a lot of AR lens systems that could work well for a hybrid display. You would want a solider to see the battlefield and the display at the same time similarly to a heads up guidance system. >>65476219>Provide a glow that flickers and flashes different as data flys by,Having a green glow would be an issue (especially during night operations). A theoretical realistic HUGS system would cover the solders face entirely like a mask as it could also double as chemical/bio weapons defense. What would be on the display? The most realistic thing would be RF tags for friendlies, IR/thermals, maybe time and weather if your fancy. Making something as cheap and as fast as possible while still being durable enough to survive a bullet is very tough.Currently a lot of the defense market is looking to invest in what I dub the "Pinocchio" system: where an operator uses a machine to attack in the place of a human. Robots are getting better at repeating motion captured actions, so it's logical to assume that they might one day be used as cannon fodder to save human lives. If you wanted to be more realistic less humanoid machines already save and kill (drones, robot dogs etc). Exo suits are also current tech to a more limited degree, as increasing human stamina, lifting capability and flight have all been genuinely achieved with modern tech.
>>65480759I was thinking a rear view mirror for the camera on the helmet.
>>65475738well kinda all the shit videogame huds do. Different cameras for different shit, thermal, radar/sonar / laser. then normal stuff like any car with parking aid. situational awareness early warning, damage assessment. positional overlay one thing to keep in mind is its not a unitasker. i can have a map on hud or i can have my music play list.
>auto targeterl/motion predictionBut make it so you cant shoot well while moving so it has drawbacks and it doesnt remove skill completely>Lidar/radar/high Speed camera to make it so you can see the bullet flight Path as if it had tracer>Connect to sensor network to scan area ahead.
Depth tunable X-ray vision so I can check out the loadout and readiness status of my female squad members.
It would probably be best to have a combination of whats already alaviable and whats wanted from these optic systems.PVS 20 style duel IR/Thermal, a compass, IFF and someway to ping points of interest. The hardest part of organized operations is figuring out where all your people are, and where the enemy is. If you see enemy movement, can put a marker on them that all your people can see, you can orient on it and move properly instead of fiddlefucking on comms. If its a full face helmet then it also needs to act as anti CBRN
>>65475738It is a HUD for marking weapon points of impact, location of friendly units, marks for enemy units, waypoints and more.It is also a way to overlay night vision, infrared, radar and other information. For your future weapons add active stabilization and aim assist.
>>65475738>What would you want the camera/lens to do?It should make the inside of the vehicle invisible to the user who sees from the PoV of the vehicle through its walls.Go play Titan Fall 2
I would look at what IRL smart scopes are capable of and use that. same with what advanced jetfighter helmets display for their pilots. One feature you might consider is "helmet burn" which is where so much information was fed to pilots on their HUDs that it actually harmed their performance. So you could make the HUD customizable to the point where the player could make it almost unplayable if too many of the features are turned on. Youd inevitably get people intentionally doing it as a challenge, or to earn the achievement, etc.
>>65475738Here you go gang.
>>65475738the one in your pic with the flat HMD looks like a modern waveguide HMD.this is extremely new tech it shows up in defense conventions for a couple of years but nobody uses it in any helis/jets yet.what id want to see with it in a game depends on the game like in a flight game it acts like standalone nightvision/HUD + enables you to see 'though' the aircraft i think the same tech will come to armor/tanks to replace current big reflector HMD helmets used in tanks
>>65481808do i join the clouid people or the sun people faction
>>65481928death to all cloudcucks! the sun people reich will shine for a thousand years!
>>65476047Stop and think about the implications of what you're saying. What if some defense contractor decided trolling an anime message board was a good place to fish for ideas on the next wander weapon to get money out of the government and never deliver? Also, I guess now that routers can be used as motion trackers, you might have some kind of display where you can throw in a grenade that pulses and leaves impressions you can see through said view to give you an idea of what a room looks like and who may or may not be in it.
>>65480964Using red is a better color as it uses less light, less power and is preferred for night operations. A physical mirror is a thousand times cheaper than a camera system in the case of wearables and wouldn't run out of power on the field. You'd really only want a rear facing camera for thermal or night vision. Keep in mind everything has a draw and you cant strap a generator to your back. Funnily enough one avenue would be militarizing solarpunk. If every solider can generate their own energy you can run a lot of tech when the grid is absolutely destroyed in active combat.
>>65482740Sounds like we'd need still suits. Not necessarily for the water generating aspect but for the fact that walking and moving produces energy
>>65482754>walking and moving produces energy KE generatorsThe problem is that even if you could make movement harder in order to generate energy (see a wind up flash light) the energy draw is a slow and active process. If a solider is stuck in a trench they can't just jog in place to generate power to call in backup. A solar cell and system would be the best currently existing technology to fill the void of electrical generation. Followed by truck sized MNE's (micro nuclear encapsulation) for 20 megawatts of power. But that could put nuclear materials in the hands of the bad guys. The third best option is what the DoD runs now, diesel and oil generators tied to a base camp. It's the same reason you don't see thousands of walking mechs on the battle field the energy generation and storage just isn't there. The biggest bottleneck in the field right now is batteries, signal and power generation.
>>65482777The Dune Still Suits also generate energy from breathing but I would argue you don't need to produce as much energy as a wall outlet. Even if it isn't a whole lot keeping your electronic bits topped up or having continuous charge should be good until you can get back to base where you can fully recharge. This probably wouldn't work if we're talking long range/behind enemy lines type of missions but that's a different problem from going out on patrol or generally being around your base.
>>65482740Red is a much worse color for HUD elements because the human eye is less sensitive and attentive to it than green.
>>65477623>tattooVomit
>>65482812> the human eye is less sensitive and attentive to red than greenTrue. Which is why green is used heavily in vehicle targeting systems and covered goggles like NGV's. The problem is when that's light is broadcast outward, (aka covering a character in a partially uncovered bright green glowing screen) the same principle works in reverse. The enemy can more easily see you because every eye is more sensitive to green. In low light scenarios red is preferred because it's harder to be seen which would make it better than green when strapped to a soldiers face at night. Since they don't need to be blanketed in green light you would also have less eye strain and become more acclimated to less light. Blanketing a solider with a full color LCD display at night would virtually blind them if they took of the system. Since going from dark to light or light to dark can temporarily decrease vision as your eyes dilate. You could set it to a timing system (green during the day and red at night) for maximum realism.>>65482795>Still Suits also generate energy from breathingIt's just way to small of an amount of energy to actually use. At rest the the power of breathing is about 2.4 J/min, a single solar panel can make 24,900 J/min. To put that into perspective a single low power LED needs 60 J/min. Making a suit powered by breathing is generally fantasy rather than something based on existing tech. Personally it just isn't as fun to speculate about that sort of thing as you can just whisk away any real issues with "advanced tech is paramount to magic."
Didn't think i would see a future soilder thread
>>65482954>In low light scenarios red is preferred because it's harder to be seen which would make it better than green when strapped to a soldiers face at nightWhich is why we use red for NVG you absolute pseud.
>>65475738we need more Ma.K, Maschinen Krieger
>>65477265They got Ron Cobb to design a lot of that, a Hollywood production designer
>>65475738Depends on the setting. In retro future settings like fallout or ma.k they're probably basic night vision and IR spotlights, maybe some oversized laser rangefinders. In near future (ie, blackops 2, newer ghost recon, etc) its basically IVAS, IFF tags linked with map software; more for situational awareness more than aiming; with shitty digital night vision as a side feature. For far future like halo or warframe its full VR, multispectral vision (not just night and thermal, but fantasy shit like for example electromagnetic and sonic) and comprehensive ballistic computing; maybe even auto aiming if the guys wearing some kinda exosuit.
>>65483722that would get foggy quick
>>65475738Make the player view kinda grainy, add the HUD directly into the player view and make it jiggle around a little when they walk every step. Blood and mud and everything should splash onto the visor. Give it zoom, give it squad vocals and other info. Basically just do Republic Commando, its pretty much perfect and everything I want from a scifi game
>>65475738>What would you want the eyepiece to do?ENVG-B, pic and link relatedhttps://www.l3harris.com/all-capabilities/enhanced-night-vision-goggle-binocular-envg-b>What would you want the camera/lens to do?Follow an eye tracker.
>>65477203>showing your own heartrate and shit could make soldiers nervous and too self-conscious, compromising their combat ability.Disagree. With training, a soldier can learn to positive feedback-control their breathing, heart rate, even body temp. Sort of how the Bene Geserit control their body through their mind. Call it "Battle Trance".
>>65475829God I love Shirow's hyperautism
>>65483801if only he'd applied that to plotting out a coherent narrative
>>65475738In the movie Aliens, the marines had an eye-piece built into their helmet that let them see infraredIt didn't help because the xenomorphs can't be seen in IR which parallels all the technology U.S. soldiers had in the Vietnam War and still got destroyed in the junglesAnd keep the eyepiece blue and glowing because it is very cool and reminds me of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
>>65483947>Advanced WarfighterWhat was the best version of this? Only played the 360 one
>>65483752>Spacing between layers>Climate controlIt would not.
How would huds work with drones everywhere?
>>65483722I wish the Army would do an OFW program again since we're finally at the point where we actually have the technology to field wild shit like that. The 90s and 2000s design concepts were too advanced for what they had at the time.
>>65485682How would taking a shit work with drones everywhere?
>>65485295Personally I thought the PC version was shit, just felt bad to play (delay on every action, you run like you've got weights on your limbs, similar to the old arma games) and a lot of the challenge was arbitrary. Like you can only carry a handful of mags for your rifle (4-5, something like that), and that's fine when you can run back and forth to your little ammo gokart, but I recall several times where you lose it for a while and you have to go through blocks of Mexican streets carefully rationing your ammo; and even then eventually you'd have to pick up a G36. You might say that's the game incentivizing getting those headshots and its a skill thing, and maybe, but to me it just comes across like my guy is badly prepared for the task; because when you had enough ammo the fights weren't that hard. Console version might not have had any glossy first person animations and was definitely more arcadey, but it also lacked a lot of the bullshit. Also split screen coop, that was very good.
