Just recently finished reading through most of the Conan stories. I watched the movie when I was a kid and all but aside from that I really never gave much thought to the source material and fuck did I miss out. It's campy as fuck but I loved most of the stories. Some of the ones that weren't written by Howard were a bit meh though.

Nothing kills my desire to write more than finding out a novel already exists with extremely similar ideas and theme. Past year I wrote a handful of short stories based in ideas I had. Spent two months adapting them into a full length story and pretty happy win the direction it's going.

The last night I was looking for something new to read and found a book trilogy I've never heard of which is eerily similar to my idea. I'm too afraid to read it out of fear that I'll subconsciously steal ideas from it.
>>
>>11599057
i just finished reading Wise Man's Fear for the first time in a couple of years and I still utterly despise Kvothe as a protagonist. He never puts a foot wrong, and when he does it still makes him seem cool and devilish and badass. Man oh man is that infuriating to read.

>>11599180
It's probably why the books are so popular: they're the very epitome of wish-fulfillment. Everyone wants to be Kvothe.

I don't understand what she and others like her have against eurocentric fantasy? Literally nobody is stopping her and others from writing afrocentric fantasy and there's plenty of asian fantasy. It's just that eurocentric is what people just resonate with the most since it's been romanticized for decades. Then again she's a clown. I'd take her seriously if she didn't one, use the "it's the white people's fault" argument and two unironically call herself a genius while everyone else is mediocre while her series is mediocre at best and just shitty at worst.

>>
>>11600090
They aren't. Did you read Urth of the New Sun? That ursula goes back in time to save Sev specifically because she realizes then that he is the Conciliator. As soon as she decides to do that, the flood strikes. Had she not decided that - had Abia not let her do it - the flood would not have come, because he would have drowned as a child. Even the devil needs a place to live. Them saving future-Jesus is basically a sign of the submission of the devil to God's will.

Why is romance in fantasy almost always horribly done? Especially modern fantasy. If you're incapable of writing a halfway believable romance then just save your readers the headache and don't write it.

>>
>>11601308
Because most fantasy writers either do romance for wish fulfillment, or because they're going through the motions and think every fantasy novel needs a romance. Very, very few actually think about writing a legitimately good story, and consider each facet and theme carefully before adding it in.
>>
>>11601308
because they never experienced the real thing
>>
>>11601308
Most modern fantasy authors are soi-based and it's difficult for them to comprehend the concept of romance without some sorta "catch" being involved.
>>
>>11601337
That may be, but earlier fantasy romance tended to be just as shit. Even Tolkien couldn't write a good one.
>>
>>11601345
Then what your examples of good fantasy romance?

How new are you fuckers

Publishers have been demanding authors shoehorn romance in since at least the 1800s and probably before then

Most self-published stuff is trash just going through the motions but publishers are to blame for its prevalence

>>11601429
People ALWAYS judge books by a cover even if they don't want to admit it. A cover like that where it's just a lion's head photoshopped onto a female is going to give off a trashy cheap badly written novel vibe even the the novel itself is some sort of hidden masterpiece.

I know, but I've read the first short story this guy wrote and it's good sword & sorcery fiction. Dark and violent without being boringly nihilistic. I wouldn't recommend any stories with such shitty covers if I hadn't of read them already. Plus I'm speaking from experience about great books with shitty covers because David Gemmell, one of my favorite fantasy writers, was cursed with shitty covers his entire life when his books were published in America.

>are there any actual books that are about whats currently happening in the western world?
Being a dirty Slav I just find the whole self-destructive mess deeply disturbing and try to avoid it but there is a growing number of authors (both of fiction and non-fiction) who are writing about it. I have Nassim Taleb shitting on muslims and "progressives" right now in his newest book, it's getting that widespread.

The irony being if white male authors were to start writing non-Eurocentric fantasy in mass then malignant cunts like her would start screaming CULTURAL APPROPRIATION! Even Poul Anderson said decades ago that writers should use non-European sources as influence. Of course he didn't mean that in the political sense; just in the variety of fantasy sense.

>No I speak for the vast majority of people

Her focused Sueness beats Kvothe's more general type, allowing her to hold her own against him in sexual matters.

False. Not all blind people are blind from birth, and those who are would have no concept of color beyond word associations. Further, in some cases the blindness is only partial and the person may be able to perceive bright lights and colors.

Anyone else read House of Shattered Wings? I picked a book in a hurry at the library last week and found it really unusual as a fantasy book. I enjoyed the shit out of it.
>set in post-apocalyptic 1920sish Paris following a very different Great War full of gothic ruins and still-active fallout
>in this setting, angels semi-regularly fall from heaven and either get claimed by one of the warring houses of angels and their servants, or get physically harvested for their magical properties by anyone who can get their hands on them, because angel body parts confer wizardly powers
>they don't have any memory or way back into heaven or anything; so even fallen angels like Morningstar himself are just people trying to survive in the world, becoming powerful influence peddlers and essentially mob bosses in an inhospitable lawless land, not trying to do good or evil or concern themselves with religious things
>people from across the world got pulled into the war, so one of the characters is a stranded foreigner with very different powers from angel magic because he's from a totally different court of mythological beings
>No religious "point" or "moral" to the whole thing despite the setting, unless "everyone is an asshole" counts
I bet a religious scholar could have an aneurysm reading this but I'm not one. Any takers?

Quite odd that there are many wolfe fags here yet no one mentions R.A. Lafferty. Wolfe was a friend of his, and seems like they shared ideas about Catholicism and the ancient world. Even their styles are somewhat similar.
>>
>>11602287
the women were all really good characters, and neither incompetent fuck ups nor insufferable cunts. Nynaeve in particular is an extremely good character who gets portrayed as annoying in early books because she's being seen from the point of view of a bunch of dumbass idiot boys who don't understand what's going on with her, but what's going on with her is generally easily understood if you're willing to read between the lines.

The exception to this is Elayne, who actually does just totally suck.

Lafferty is the fucking goddamn man, I love him to death, he's my favorite writer.

OTOH, he's an almost impenetrably weird writer at times. His style isn't actually comparable to Wolfe's at all (imo) except insofar as they both have similar concerns with Catholicism and both are often difficult to penetrate. A better comparison is maybe Flann O'Brian but even that is tricky. In terms of popularity, I think he suffers from the fact that, one, his books are extremely hard to get a hold of. Two, there are very few good comparable writers - it's hard to say "if you like writer X, you'll definitely like Lafferty". Three, his work is weird and not really suited to mass popularity - his plots meander and wander around and approach things from odd angles and never settle comfortably into any recognizable mold. And four, his fanbase has a substantial portion of Catholicness, which is often limiting in terms of recruiting new readers.

He is an absolute goddamn genius, though, and I recommend him in the strongest possible terms to anyone. I would say start with Reefs Of Earth, Fourth Mansions, or any of the short story collections you can get your hands on.

I mean, that's pretty much all Rand does for the entire series, but when he fucks up someone is always there ready to berate him for it. He's even pretty hard on himself most of the time.

It hasn't occurred enough, then, if people aren't buying enough noneurocentric fantasy novels to make them a bigger thing and a more viable market. Don't get me wrong, though, I love variety and I don't give a shit about the ethnicity of characters outside of hot it pertains to the story itself. I just mean that if the majority of popular fantasy novels are about white people in magical Not-Europe then its a reflection of what the market wants.

That, or there's some kind of scary global conspiracy against the brown people and their cultures in regards to their role in fantasy literature.

Lander was a damn wingnut. She is the poster girl for BPD f2f who ruins your life. Egwene is a bitch, but she gets better when she starts making the other women in the story miserable. Nynaeve is the most tsundere character outside of anime ever. She is super awkward and used to dealing with old peoe who don't respect her, so she is super pushy in the beginning. She is also probably the bravest character in the whole series, even though she thinks that feeling fear makes her a coward. Second most tsundere is Aviendha. She is actually useful and pretty level headed for the most part. Min is the best girl in the whole book. She has a great personality, useful powers, and just wants to screw Rand's brains out. Most of the other women are varying levels of bitchiness, with Cadsuane and Elayne duking it out for Queen Cunt. Holy cheap did I want Elayne to meet a first death full of humiliation.

I think there's plenty of a market for non-Tolkien fantasy, it's just publishers aren't willing to risk something different.

True. She was the only Aes Sedai that actually lived up to the title. Well, Siuan was pretty good too. Faile was actually a good character, but she had the general problem all women do of projecting a ton of bullshit onto the men in her life. I didn't find it excessively grimdark. It didn't read as if it were trying to be. There's a character (and profession) that is essentially an undertaker for angels, because when they die you can't just waste them given the setting, but for all that, the author doesn't go into disgusting detail like she could have.

There's not even a single mention of rape as far as I remember. Fucking trailblazing right?
