So, what's the best English version of Journey to the West?
>>
Anthony Yu
>>
I have
>Anthony Yu Journey
>Roy Plum in the Golden Vase
>Moss Roberts Three Kingdoms
>Shapiro Water Margin
>Hawke Dream of the Red Chamber
I read a bit of Water Margin but found it frustrating that it didn't contain many notes so stopped soon after the guy released evil demons (and some hero spirits) for literally no reason
I'm reading Tale of Genji by Royall Tyler and it has a lot of notes, I recommend it a lot

Froganon here, a fellow frog has an opinion on this edition? The small comic format looks gorgeous, but the price is quite high and I don't know what the translation is worth, even if most of the reviews are good, I hesitate to buy it.

WJF Jenner I think people recommend as an easier and more pleasant read that sacrifices some accuracy for the sake of readability. Anthony Yu on the other hand is more accurate but some think he is a bit on the drier end. Yu also has an abridged version if you're in for a quicker read.

if you want to read a fun story, Arthur Waley, definitely. Yu is for scholars, which is also no bad thing.

Can recommend Julia Lovell for a juicy and rollicking read too, but can't compare it to others since it's the only one I've read. I doubt there's many anons here who have read multiple translations though.

I'm on my way to completing the one by Lovell too, currently on chapter 25. However, it feels watered down albeit fun, and the abridgements make themselves quite noticeable and can take away from the flow of the story. That being said, the full 100 chapter version is a slog I hear with many monster of the week chapters so maybe the Anthony Yu abridgment is better? I've been thinking of giving his full version a try once I have the time.
