Welcome to /pg/, where we read, write, and discuss pulp fiction. No, not the Tarantino film, but the classic genre stories from early 20th-century magazines printed on cheap wood *pulp* paper. These tales offered thrills for the common man and let imaginations soar. Though the magazines are gone, the spirit lives on, and here at /pg/, we explore the worlds, characters, and stories they inspired. So come on in and join the discussion!

The pulps generally did not have themselves to cannibalize or become incestuous with. They did not last long enough to. Thus, they had to pull inspiration from without. And if you're going to draw inspiration from without, may as well draw from myth, legend, the western canon, and more timeless sources.

Contrast with superhero comic books which mostly draw from themselves and just spirals further and further down. Sometimes a clue pops up, but it is fleeting.

This contrast is something to be learned from for those of us who try to create new pulp.

Tell you guys what. I am at >5k words into this Skull story, and I'm maybe at the halfway point. I doubt that I can finish the story by Sunday night for the BET, but I most certainly can produce that first half or so as 6k words or more by then.

You'll get your 6k words, but you're getting a bigger story than ever down the line.

I just finished a 13k word story about a vain model and Z-lost actor transported to another world who ends up fighting in a tournament for the hand of a noblewoman. I just gotta edit it to make it less autistic and I’ll be set

13k is wrong, I’m tired—it’s 1.3K, 1,300 words

I don't know why I always skipped the ads in pulps, but I started actually reading them recently and they're often as entertaining as the stories. Such a funny little subterranean economy, hoovering up spare change from the pockets of young men.
