It's a fine line. A lot of authors speak through their characters and use them as self-inserts. It takes a good reader to tell if the author believes what the character is saying or not. Sometimes a character will say a bunch of bullshit and then, on a random page, they'll say something that rings true and you'll get the sense that the author is speaking through that character.
