Who’s the earliest example in literature of the miserable, spiteful, narcissistic mother archetype as embodied by Livia Soprano?
>>24840449The earliest example I can think of is Caroline Compson from The Sound and the Fury. Now that was a malignant cunt. Like Livia too she kind of kickstarts the whole story by traumatizing and neglecting her children
>>24840449Honor thy Father and Mother is an essential commandment of thee ten commandments so I imagine this type of disrespect to god and family didn't occur until after Martin Luther and his 95 theses
>>24840457Do Christians genuinely believe that you need to respect your parents no matter how despicable they are?
>>24840449Ishtar, Hera, Clytemnestra
>>24840552only the ones who take it literally (many such cases)
>>24840552They worship jews, is it really that surprising that they're speds?
>>24840552That describes most of everyone else besides Christians.
>>24840552What's so outlandish about this? Confucian filial piety isn't far from this like of thinking and it's spread all over Asia.
Why do you think the character was named Livia?
>>24840589She wasn't portrayed similarly to Livia Soprano in ancient texts and I, Claudius isn't that old.

>>24840745>Honoring your parents doesn't mean obeying them blindly.Sorry you rice christian, you can't pick and choose when to obey god, and tony fucked up by putting his mother in a home instead of taking care of her.The Church teaches that adult children have a duty to honour their parents by providing "material and moral support in old age and in times of illness, loneliness, or distress". This honour should be based on the son or daughter's gratitude for the life, love and effort given by the parents and motivated by the desire to pay them back in some measure. As stated in Exodus 22:28 that one must not curse God nor curse a ruler of your people on which the teachings of the Catholic Church has based from, the compliance and concept of the commandment is also extended to other persons of all ages outside one's own family such as extended family member belonging on other families, teachers, advisers, and leaders of all institutions and their subordinates which are people who belonged to them including those who impose and enforce laws, agreements, policies, and regulations. The commandment to honour father and mother also forms a basis for charity to others when each person is seen, ultimately, as "a son or daughter of the One who wants to be called 'our Father'." Thus, charitable actions are viewed as extensions of the honour owed to the heavenly Father.
>>24840552Yeah it is slave mentality. It wasn’t meant for parents that hate and sabotage their children. Even the Greeks believed a son that was not taught a profession by his father did not have to take care of the father in old age.
>>24840557>HeraThis is where it all began. The first and last woman.
>>24840557>>24841638/thread Why was Hera such a bitch?
>>24840557>>24841638>>24841664What’s the story or myth that best reveals Hera’s cold and cuntlike nature?
>>24840589This was my thought too. Grave's interpretation of Livia is the character and archetype that directly inspired Livia Soprano in name and characteristics. Though as >>24840664pointed out this arcehtype isn't completely portrayed in the original sources, and was in many ways Grave's interpretation, though not his wholesale invention. Tacitus gives a sinister portrait of Livia that references her manipulation, and her machiavellian role. Though, I don't think you could use the term "narcissist" or "borderline personality" that are specifically characteristic of Livia Soprano.
