>What is /wng/ - Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

Authors can ban you, usually happens when you leave a comment on their fiction. Some do it pre-emptively if they think you're being negative and/or will leave a negative review.

The idea that someone hates /wng/ so much that they've applied to an unpaid position just to ban it is both hilarious and sad.

Show, don’t tell is a meme. So is most writing advice you see online.
Just take a look at these excerpts from Jurassic Park, and spot how many of the “15 things you need to cut from your manuscript!” it breaks. From using adverbs, to emotional tells, info dump, filler words, and more.

Mike Bowman whistled cheerfully as he drove the Land Rover through the Cabo Blanco Biological Reserve, on the west coast of Costa Rica. It was a beautiful morning in July, and the road before him was spectacular: hugging the edge of a cliff, overlooking the jungle and the blue Pacific. According to the guidebooks, Cabo Blanco was unspoiled wilderness, almost a paradise. Seeing it now made Bowman feel as if the vacation was back on track.
Bowman, a thirty-six-year-old real estate developer from Dallas, had come to Costa Rica with his wife and daughter for a two-week holiday. The trip had actually been his wife’s idea; for weeks Ellen had filled his ear about the wonderful national parks of Costa Rica, and how good it would be for Tina to see them. Then, when they arrived, it turned out Ellen had an appointment to see a plastic surgeon in San José. That was the first Mike Bowman had heard about the excellent and inexpensive plastic surgery available in Costa Rica, and all the luxurious private clinics in San José.
Of course they’d had a huge fight. Mike felt she’d lied to him, and she had. And he put his foot down about this plastic surgery business. Anyway, it was ridiculous, Ellen was only thirty, and she was a beautiful woman. Hell, she’d been Homecoming Queen her senior year at Rice, and that was not even ten years earlier. But Ellen tended to be insecure, and worried. And it seemed as if in recent years she had mostly worried about losing her looks.
That, and everything else.
The Land Rover bounced in a pothole, splashing mud. Seated beside him, Ellen said, “Mike, are you sure this is the right road? We haven’t seen any other people for hours.”
“There was another car fifteen minutes ago,” he reminded her. “Remember, the blue one?”
“Going the other way …”
“Darling, you wanted a deserted beach,” he said, “and that’s what you’re going to get.”
Ellen shook her head doubtfully. “I hope you’re right.”
“Yeah, Dad, I hope you’re right,” said Christina, from the backseat. She was eight years old.
###
“Hey, Alan!”
He stood, a barrel-chested, bearded man of forty. He heard the chugging of the portable generator, and the distant clatter of the jack-hammer cutting into the dense rock on the next hill. He saw the kids working around the jackhammer, moving away the big pieces of rock after checking them for fossils. At the foot of the hill, he saw the six tipis of his camp, the flapping mess tent, and the trailer that served as their field laboratory. And he saw Ellie waving to him, from the shadow of the field laboratory.
“Visitor!” she called, and pointed to the east.

Somewhere Else
4 Nebraska high schoolers discover a portal to a magical world inspired by the Grimm Fairytales. (Not Isekai, they go back and forth taking gold and selling it in the real world)

(Told from 3 of the kids in flash backs retelling the story in their 30's)

I post this one because I think a lot of 4chaners will resonate with the center character, an autist who falls hard for fantasy world because life is so much better for him there

Hey, burgeoning web novelist here, I've been published traditionally before but it failed so I know I have to build my own base.

I'm going to use 2nd person sentences that i have to order to just expand upon the sentences and change it to third person perspective.
I find the straightforward pov with 2nd really shines when it's used to craft 3rd person perspective sentences much like that of a rough draft.
>>
>>24847440
I have no idea what you're talking about, but straight 2nd is bound to cause reader fatigue unless it's interspersed with other perspectives. Honestly, I'd go (I am going...) with 4th-wall-breaking narrator occasional addressing the reader as you.

I've added in the earnings per follower and follower to total member ratio. It wasn't as much as a problem I thought it would be, but it has various limitations and issues. The main one being the dataset didn't have the unique followers per author, and as previously mentioned, only has the total member count for the patreon. Look at it and let me know what else could reasonably be done if needed.

>>
>>24847493
Not half bad, even though cyberpunk is not my thing. Your writing is readable and has some distinct personality too. I liked Aiko's part especially. But both scenes kinda drag and ask for trimming. I'm having trouble seeing the story, or how the povs connect. Even if the characters don't meet anyday soon, there should be some common ground from that start that helps recognize they share the same world and what are their relative positions in it. So it's not just a book you didn't ask for spliced in between the book you picked up.

if the author hasn't done their due diligence to make their work look good, im not gonna bother wasting my time

i'll let you off on chapter 5 or so, but if you make egregious grammar errors in the first few chapters (and especially chapter 1) or the blurb, then you clearly don't respect your work, so i won't put my time in it either

i was joking (only slightly, though) about the chapter name, because i opened the fiction page and it's immediately the first thing i notice

Did it come out of left field for them? Or what didn't they like specifically? Wondering because although my narration doesn't specifically target the audience, it is still breaking the 4th wall. Eg: "Patience, narrator."

>>24847638
There's a specific style within which this is allowed and in all other it really sucks ass. Judging by the fact that even RR isn't willing to deal with you, I'm gonna guess it's the latter.

I can write a short story in 2nd person, but writing something like this long term would be difficult.

The shadow that had weighed heavily on your mind begins to lift. Slowly, you claw your way back to consciousness. The first sensation you notice is motion. Your body lurches and sways, carried along by an unseen force. Moments later, the steady clatter of hooves striking stone reaches your ears, echoing through the howling wind.
As your senses sharpen, the world around you begins to emerge from the haze. You see the shape of a horse, a coachman hunched over the reins, and a dense fog that hangs thick beyond the cart. You are seated in the back, rattling along a narrow path bordered by jagged cliffs and towering pine trees.
You try to remember how you got here, but your thoughts are scattered. You do not know where you are or what has happened.
You glance around, although your vision remains blurred, as if you are peering through frosted glass. Even more unsettling is the realization that you cannot move or speak.
“Hey, you,” a voice calls out.
You turn your head and see that you are not alone. Across from you sits a man clad in battered chainmail. His face is streaked with grime, and his blond hair and beard hang in tangled, unkempt strands. He may have passed for a vagrant, if not for the thick cords of muscle in his arms and the coarse rope binding his wrists.
You look down and discover that your own hands are tied in the same way.
“You’re finally awake,” the man says. “You were trying to cross the border, right? You walked right into the Imperial ambush. Same as us, and that thief over there.”
His words stir something inside you, but your memory remains blank. Did you try to cross the border? Why can’t you remember? And why do his words, and this entire situation, feel so familiar?
You follow his gaze and see two other men in the cart. One is a dark, wiry figure dressed in rags. The other wears a fine fur robe and sits stiffly with a gag over his mouth.
“Damn Stormcloaks! Skyrim was fine until you came along,” the wiry man snaps. “The Empire was nice and lazy. If they hadn’t been looking for you, I could’ve stolen that horse and been halfway to Hammerfell.”
Stormcloaks… Empire… Skyrim… The words echo in your mind with a strange familiarity. The recognition is there, just out of reach, like a word stuck at the tip of your tongue.

also the 'meta' is a little complicated. something like male mc sysapoc is meta for the scene at large but struggles on RR comparatively. there's a few sysapocs that got like 800-2000 followers then go on to make like $60,000 every book they release on amazon lol
very dependent on your situation

No hate to the story, but you’re talking as if it has some crazy high follower count.
If you’re aiming for the one hundred followers range, you can write pretty much anything you want as long as someone somewhere finds it remotely amusing.
Even my shit post story that hadn’t been updated in two years still has a hundred followers.

It's all relative, but the ones with crazy follower counts make sense to me. They're smooth to read and clear, and I take these things into account. So that's why I'm so confused why I'm below wheel & wing, even though I'd expect most people to be like >>24848818 , just completely confused.

I just don't know, I feel like there's a "free spirit" approach that makes me jealous. I don't understand it, and neither do a lot of people––but it seems like that uniqueness and poetry works?

Tense issues. Join the club. I had never heard of "tense problems" before coming here. I started noticing it now, and I'm starting to catch myself doing it in the rough draft at times now. I'm pretty sure my tense issues came to the forefront when I suddenly went first person. The first person MC is relating the story though through prose, so I get the past tense requirement. It just seems perfectly natural for a person telling a story to be relating what happened n past tense, but then they'll say things *about* what happened, and it reads natural to me that some of that comes out as present tense. Yet while other complaints and niggles varied I did hear "tense" as a somewhat common review complaint of samples, so I'm attacking it.

are there any WNs where the main focus is on survival?

ie. MC gets isekai’d to a fantasy world and instead of powerleveling and getting involved in world-spanning plots, fucks off/gets exiled/appears in the wilderness and has to primitive survival their way back to a harsh yet relatively comfortable standard of living.
>>
>>24849117

A web novel that's actually about survival would never work. People read web novels only for harems, comedies of misunderstanding, and self-insert power fantasies: in other words whatever gives dopamine the fastest. They'd never enjoy something like pic rel, or the chapters describing the whalehunting life in Moby Dick, or Lord of the Flies (haven't read that one myself)
>>
>>24849131
And pulp is synonymous with trash for a reason
>>
>>24849117
I'm writing a portal fantasy where a wagie gets stuck on the other world and for the first half of it, the MC main goal is to survive. After that, using all the weapons, allies and resources he managed to gather he decides to join a group of terrorist on a suicide mission to attack the tower where a bunch of aristocrats live, since they're the only ones with a way back home. Does that count?
>>
>>24849135
>Lord of the Flies (haven't read that one myself)
Well, you should, since it's just the kind of slop you see on RR
>>
>>24849135
it is strange to me, personally, that no one has tried writing a WN version of Hatchet, given how easily it is to plot from chapter to chapter, the diverse conflicts that can be used, the sense of progression other than a tangible increase in power from seeing the MC struggle to survive to makinv a good homestead.

a wilderness survival plot can be easily adapted to the needs of a serial, though that might be my personal wilderness survival autism leaking through.

there is so much survival pulp and pulp readers are just pre modern sloppers
as a slop reader, I've loved the aspects of stories that are about survival in a fantasy world. thing is that webnovels often have the survival be a step in the protagonist's progression fantasy
>People read web novels only for harems, comedies of misunderstanding, and self-insert power fantasies: in other words whatever gives dopamine the fastest

I'll only tell you this once, but the chinese hoard all the meaningful and profound web lit on Ao3. The divide is very pronounced between longform serials as one is written for passion and the other for profit.
I read longform web slop because I enjoy turning my brain off and sinking days into a world or work, as well as the fact that a competitive literature market means that they have to come up with interesting premises or hooks, but if I want to read something that'll make me dig in to each paragraph in appreciation before staring up at the ceiling afterwards for an extended period of time once done, I'll go on Ao3 and turn a browser translator on.
There are good longform chinese web literature, but they're very rare. I can think of like maybe four max off the top of my head.
The Koreans only make slop, I haven't really seen them capable of the self-introspection necessary to create a work of quality.

Back to literary value. What determines if a literary work has literary value? Being a Westerner I have never encountered anyone driven and ambitious like Fang Yuan in fiction or in real life. His way of thinking is the real value. Maybe for the /wg/ fags countless pages of purple prose is the value.

Three little pigs taught a valuable lesson about the importance of investing in your own safety and comfort. Those who pat themselves on the back for choosing shitty housing because the materials were cheap and the labor was easy will inevitably find themselves dependent on the mercy of those who chose more wisely.
Reverend Insanity teaches the importance of living like one of those blood-drinking pederasts who treat the 48 Laws of Power as a holy scripture; it could only be compared to the three little pigs if straw pig murdered his older brothers for their share of the inheritance and dressed up as a chick to get sodomized by the big bad wolf in the hopes of taking half his shit in the divorce.

Anons here are lazy neets. They can't imagine having a goal and applying themselves towards it. They can't even muster up the willpower to write bottom of the barrel litrpg webslop. Of course they wouldn't understand a character that pursues a goal at all costs, to himself and to others.
