. in her book “The Lost History of Liberalism,” the Swedish historian Helena Rosenblatt shows that in its oldest forms, liberalism was built on a virtue that we rarely talk about today. “To the ancient Romans,” Rosenblatt writes, “being free required more than a republican constitution; it also required citizens who practiced liberalitas, which referred to a noble and generous way of thinking and acting toward one’s fellow citizens.”
guess which ancient Roman she was talking about, I'll give you two guesses

Ahh, I see it is time for Globohomo and ZOG to hastily defend Liberalism because they realize they need it. This is really a pathetic rear-guard action; they should have been defending Liberalism for a while now since it is the ideology that undergirds their entire geopolitical project. They let the Fascists, the Monarchists, and the Catholics whack away at it basically for 20 years uninterrupted, and have only now belatedly realized the error of this.

Of course they're too late to save it. They're too late to save themselves. The coming decades will be terrible for them.

>The Liberal Principles of Benjamin Constant and Madame de Stael
does this retard not know that those two were both constitutional monarchists or is she suggesting that constitutional monarchists can be liberals?
>>
>>24849155
>constitutional monarchists can be liberals
Yes?
>>
oh my god she's a benjamin constant scholar, that explains it

fellas, is supporting a hereditary monarchy a liberal position? nordcucks can't reply
>>
>>24849097
wait it's literally the history of the word "liberalism", incredibly dumb lmao

>“Usurpers” are constantly compelled to justify their positions, so they use lies and propaganda to manufacture support. They form alliances with religious authorities to prop up their regimes. They take their countries into useless wars to distract people from their treachery, while they enhance their own power, line their own pockets and enrich their friends. Worst of all, they corrupt their people by tricking them into participating in their lies.
fellas, is "liberal" the most accurate way to describe this position? is there not, perhaps, a more accurate term to describe someone who goes on about usurpers?
>>
>>24849112
I haven't read anything by Cicero, what's his deal?
>>
>>24849692
pretentious nerd and greekaboo who got integrated into a lot of early christian stuff and your standard liberal arts integration even though all his speeches are florid, he's unrepresentative of the average roman optimates/ patrician and his "philosophy" is just recycled stoic/ neoplatonic crap

That's well known, isn't it?
For Liberalism to work you need virtuous people. Liberalism without virtuous people lead to chaos.
The problem is that Liberalism in practice has led to moral nihilism and this obviously led to "unvirtuous people".
>>
>>24849097
I could have sworn that I had seen this book before and pirated it but I guess I was wrong. Thanks for posting.

Liberalism only works when people are trying to be like god. It is a noble and aristocratic code.
>>
>>24849815
>>24849822
you do realise that what she's redefining liberalism as is even more unpopular and morally indefensible than current liberalism is, right? it's essentially an authoritarian ideology opposed to despotism as opposed to an individualist ideology opposed to authoritarianism entirely based on benjamin constant's deranged ravings
>>
>>24849842
Leftist jargon
>>
>>24849862
all the words i'm using are in this book you're so heckin' interested in
>>

Are you retarded
Even Cicero praised his writing
>>
>>24849874
...i think you're getting them the other way around
>>
>>24849692
Fat orator and pop-philosopher who devoted half his writings to jerking himself off
This is his only surviving line of poetry which tells you everything
O fortunatam natam me consule Romam
Which reads like
O Rome fortunáte / Born in my consuláte
He’s mostly popular because of his prose style but honestly there are better Latin stylists like Augustine and Petronius who are also actually enjoyable to read for content alone

“The Gallic War is splendid. It is bare, straight and handsome, stripped of rhetorical ornament like an athlete of his clothes. … There is nothing in a history more attractive than clean and lucid brevity” - Cicero

>unpopular
In relation to who? What group of people thinks whatever you think is here is unpopular?
>morally indefensible
And what is that morality? What are you comparing it to?
>current liberalism
What do you mean by that? The liberalism of the American revolution? The French Revolution? 20th century consensus liberalism? Whatever woke people trick people into thinking liberalism is? What Lolbertarians think is liberalism? What post-liberals think liberalism is?
>authoritarian
What do you mean by that? Do you mean that in the way that leftists use it when they want to hurt people that have boundaries and don’t want their shit taken from them and don’t want to be enslaved by marxists and barbarians?
>individualist ideology
Do you mean that in the way that leftists use that term? Ie feminine individualism, which is degenerate state dependency? Pretending that reality isn’t real, that whatever I want is good and that the state and everyone else should constantly validate that and give it to me because I just deserve it okay?
>>
>>24849895
that's exactly what i said, it's a bunch of simple sentences about taking slaves. that's not praise
>>24849901
you're either very stupid or you know the answer to at least half of those
>>
>>24849903
It is 100% praise lol
And he wrote sentences about fighting Romans too not just raping gauloids so show him some respect
>>
>>24849906
i went to gaul. it was very nice. i took lots of slaves. i enjoyed my trip to gaul.- gaius julius caesar, age 51. praised by cicero for his "clean and lucid brevity"
