what are some good dutch language books for a dutch learner
How good is your Dutch currently? If you're still learning, it might not be the best idea to jump straight into literature.Anyway, I like Harry Mulisch, especially "Het stenen bruidsbed" (it is also relativity short, but it does have pretty complicated language.) Hermans is also a great choice, from his short stories to his popular novels, they're all great.

Whatever recs you get, Dutch language has actually changed quite quickly over the years. If you're still learning the language, I would stay away from anything pre ~mid 80s. The language in older titles is not going to be usable in everyday conversations without being looked at as a weirdo (I fully embrace this though). Shame, as some of the best Dutch titles are a bit older than that (Karakter, Lijmen, Eline Vere, Kees de Jongen).

I can understand it completely perfectly in contrast to Flemish Dutch which still retains its original accents and dialects. Younger Dutch speakers in the Netherlands literally speak like Americans speaking a second language.

No Dutchies even want to speak to foreigners in Dutch anyway. But I do have trouble with the archaic language in older Dutch literature. It seems like such a vast language with so much archaic language that I have to look up. I dont feel this way about French, where someone like Guy de Maupassant frankly writes in language very close to modern French.

They're fluent in zero languages, it's all mixed up gibberish that's functional in everyday life, but not aesthetically pleasing.>>24871360Sad thing about trying to understand the archaic language in older Dutch literature is that there are barely any sources to fall back on. We seemingly never had a strong culture of literary critique, and sometimes there will be a word in a Van Eeden / Couperus / Hildebrand book that I try to look up, but that returns zero hits. This is a thing that's much easier with English language literature, there's such a wealth of secondary sources out there, and the language can almost be reconstructed through Google for every era back to Chaucer at least.

Dutch of 40 years ago already feels incredibly old, and young people generally can read it, but not actually decipher meaning intent or subtle linguistic flourishes. The only people genuinely fluent are boomers who grew up with American and British soldiers stationed in their back gardens. Younger people have that Americanized accent yet ironically barely speak English. At least the Flemish have a sort of national/cultural pride and force everyone to speak Dutch, I don't see that at all in the Netherlands where apparently you can just choose whether you want to speak English or Dutch

The language is not overly difficult, it's grimly funny, and the subject matter is quite relevant for the average 4chan user. >20-something cynic loner living with parents being bored as fuck and socially awkward in every encounter, making fun of cancer and baldness.
