Il fut un temps, pas si lointain – mon grand-père en fut témoin –, où l'on lisait dans les journaux des critiques de livres, de courts poèmes, voire des pages entières de prose. On découpait ces extraits, on les mémorisait. Les auteurs en question menaient une vie paisible. Leur personnalité était un mystère, tout comme les rumeurs à leur sujet étaient des légendes, même si l'on connaissait leurs œuvres par cœur. Les livres à couverture rigide emplissaient les foyers. On recevait chaque mois par la poste des ouvrages reliés cuir. Aujourd'hui, cette époque est révolue. Une véritable armée de clowns écrit des livres que personne ne lit, et pourtant, le monde entier est au courant de leurs balivernes quotidiennes. Bref, tout est l'inverse d'avant.
