I liked it well enough overall but even after Roskolnikov's motives are explained over and over, it still feels retarded to me, which is odd because he's supposed to be smart. Seems like some kind of strawmanning of godlessness or something. There's no way any actually intelligent person would come up with a theory as dumb as his.

Also maybe I'm dim but the jump back into religion at the end seemed like it came out of nowhere because up until the very last chapter he was still pissed off and resentful of ever having confessed. Reminded me of the end of the film God's Not Dead

Svidrigailov also felt like a cartoon nihilist though I doubt any real serial murder rapist nihilist would be haunted by ghosts.

You have to be white to understand the whole substance of its material.

Are you one of those guys who equates whiteness with autism

I don't think Roskonikov is really meant to be that smart. He's articulate and well-educated but emotionally immature and, as you say, his theory is objectively pretty dumb. I think Dosto's intention is more to show how people descend into insane or immoral ideologies when they are overconfident in their own intellect, socially isolated and, yes, non-religious. The author was deeply religious so you can't really take that out of the equation.

The fact that so many chuds on this board continue to misread Crime and Punishment and come away with it with the interpretation that "Raskolnikov is literally me" proves that (1) Raskolnikov is not a strawman and (2) the ideas of the book are still very relevant. You don't necessarily need to agree with the author that Christianity is the best way to live one's life to appreciate that Raskolnikov was craving some kind of "higher purpose" the whole time.

Poor media literacy really is a epidemic, isn't it?

Is this the best one?

its one of the worst endings ever

Yeah, I got this, it just seemed very heavy handedly "this is your brain on atheism and intellectualism" but it would also be retarded of me to want a fictional novel to align with my own view of reality so whatever lol.

I think the biggest issue is the ending. Roskolnikov finding God was so abrupt and seemingly more out of fear of widespread moral decay than any actual belief or love of God. I would have liked there to be a lot more about his time in prison, if only to make it feel more natural.

His mom said he was going to be known as one of the great thinkers of his generation and moms always know better

I started with the Garnett one but found it a bit hard to follow (audiobook though). Ended up buying a hardcover of the McDuff translation and found that one to be extremely readable.

>Nooo, you need to suffer in abject poverty your entire life because it's the right thing to do. Don't murder some old useless spinster and take her money, you NEED to be poor
To this day I can't fathom how people accept this worldview. I would gladly kill a thousand old women if it means improving my station in life.

Nothing stopped him from tutoring merchants' children a bit like all his classmates did, finish his studies and live happily ever after as a lawyer.

Nietzche?

Lol I don't think the neech would have believed that murdering some random old lady would somehow lead to a life of excellence

People in positions of power exploit those below them and society moves merrily along. They lie, cheat, steal or kill the average person and show zero regard for his life. And this is not punished in any way. However when the low class person opens his eyes and starts to implement the same way of thinking and doing, he is branded as evil for deciding to take what he wants now instead of degrading himself for the scraps from the masters table. Raskolnikov could spend years of his life painstakingly climbing to the top, and finally achieve some freedom when he becomes old and decrepit. Or he can take what he wants now, secure his future and still enjoy his youth.

This isn't remotely true. You talk like you have a huge chip on your shoulder and like something is owed to you.

Yeah that worked out well for him.

Rodya is very educated but also starved, emotionally immature, and myopic. If you were like that + somewhat isolated as a young adult he feels completely real and psychologically coherent

>>25295213
Oh, I thought you meant the Napoleon theory.
>>
>>25296514
lol nah, the theory makes enough sense, it's just the leap from that to murdering an old lady that seems retarded to me, though yeah, I guess I'm also talking about a character that spends 3/4 of the book literally delirious
