>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

How do characters wearing those Chinese robes even do combat? It doesn't even look like you can kick in those things? Applies to both wuxia and xianxia
>>
I picked up Path of Dragons. The premise seems really cool - a druid system apocalypse story. I started reading, but it felt a little off at the beginning, so I decided to take a look at the reviews:
>Multi POV
Literally the second chapter of the story already swaps to another POV to a character that isn't anywhere near MC. If there's a literary sin this should be near the top of the list.
>You will see some negative reviews about LGBT+ characters in this novel, those come from a place of hate.
Any criticism about LGBT stuff, no matter how mild, always gets labeled as hate by the supporters. This implies that there's going to be a lot of LGBT stuff in the story. Reviews wouldn't bring it up otherwise at all. Eg The Wandering Inn has some LGBT characters, but it doesn't come up in reviews.

This is the TOP review for the story:
>One of my favorite books so far. Watching the mc fight and stugleing to survive as he learns his place in this new world is so fun to read. I really love learning about the new world and what makes it unique. Ive alway like world building so very much.
I feel like the "top" review should say a little more than that.

I don't know if this is worth continuing. I guess I'll continue reading until I get to the inevitable "men are bad" or "if you aren't an ally you're evil" point in the story.
>>
>>25294773
That really didn't take long:
>“Maybe Roy will get eaten by a zombie. Or turned. Then, I can legally blow his head—”
>“Carmen!”
>“Who’s Roy?” asked Miguel.
>“Someone your mom knows from work,” Alyssa said, referring to the head of Carmen’s department. He was a blatant misogynist who constantly questioned her work, belittled her at every opportunity, and had even come on to her on more than one occasion. “He’s not important.”
Miguel is supposedly these son of these two women. At another point one of the moms called the 8 year old kid's taste "trash" for liking the walking dead.

>“Okay, so first thing’s first,” Alyssa said, deciding that it was better to treat it as an apocalyptic emergency and be wrong than the opposite scenario. “We need to catalog our supplies. You and Miggy go to the kitchen—”
>“Did you seriously just tell me to go to the kitchen?” asked Carmen with a grin.
And we've already had 2 month time skip in like the first 10 chapters. What's the point of a system apocalypse story of you just skip over the early parts?! You're already spreading yourself thin by adding these POV switches constantly.

I'm planning out the story I want to write and I'm just drawing a blank for companions for the main character. I have a vague shape of an idea for what they are useful for in the plot, but I just can't seem to put down any details about them.

I'm having a similar problem with antagonists. I've got the one that's fleshed out and then the "final boss" (but I wouldn't consider that to really be an antagonist), but I have such a hard time coming up with anything intermediate. This one is a little easier, because I can just draw upon stereotypes to fill them out. My problem is more that I don't know where they would be antagonistic so that it actually feels satisfying when they are beat.

“Thirty years west of the Mississippi, thirty years east of the Mississippi. Never bully the poor and downtrodden!” Yee Lee declared as red, white, and blue spiritual qi spiraled around his bluesteel Colt.
“Yee Lee, hand over the deed to the Sun-Bleached Ranch now, or don’t blame this old man for showing no mercy,” Slavemaster Butcher sneered.
He sat astride a powerful obsidian mustang, one hand resting on the ivory grip of his gold-plated repeater. Behind him, six cultivators of the Iron Rail Gang leveled their rifles at the lone youth standing against them upon the sweltering salt flats. The black iron barrels shimmered beneath the merciless sun.
“Mercy?” Yee Lee thundered. “Where was that mercy when you butchered my father and sold my brothers and sisters into slavery? For nine bitter years, I wandered the borderlands, surviving on muddy water and spirit coyotes. For nine bitter years, I tempered the Supreme Lone Wanderer Dao Heart, severing myself from all humanity, all for the day I could claim my revenge. And that day has finally come!”
Butcher’s expression darkened. “Insolent brat! You dare fail to recognize heaven and earth before you? My patience is spent. Die!”
His thumb snapped back the hammer of his golden repeater. The motion carried the weight of a lifetime of tyrannical cultivation, swift as lightning.
But Yee Lee was faster.
His hand blurred and seven shots cracked across the salt plain, so rapid they sounded as one.
Screams erupted. The Iron Rail Gang cultivators collapsed where they stood, fingers frozen stiff upon their triggers.
“…Im… impossible…”
Blood trickled down Slavemaster Butcher’s brow. A clean hole pierced the center of his forehead and exited through the back of his skull.
He swayed once before tumbling from his mount, dead before he struck the earth.
Yee Lee watched his father’s killer fall without the slightest flicker of emotion. In his pursuit of vengeance, he had long ago abandoned even the capacity for satisfaction.
“Father… brothers… sisters… your souls may finally rest.”
He released his gun, letting it fall into the dust. His hand was charred black and ruined from unleashing the forbidden Tri-Color Extreme Yang Quickdraw.
Now left weaponless, purposeless, Yee Lee climbed onto the masterless obsidian mustang and rode alone into the wavering heat haze upon the horizon.

Just binged through and caught up to Labor of Zucchini's new web novel . . . and then realized it actually ended in ch31. Wish I had the courage to make a review and even more skill to write one, but I liked it. I liked it, despite the rough edges. In other news finished starship troopers over the course of a day earlier this week, was shocked to see firsthand how completely different it was from the american movie, and how much of a checklist it felt reading it(this happened, this happened, before this happened this happene, after this happened this happened...) just felt bewildering reading it nearly right after moon mistress and crazy to me he wrote this right as he was writing stranger in a strange land, still enjoyed it though despit the utter lack of characters agency or really any depth at all (again reading this after mistress where there was some form of agency, and mindboggling still where there was characters existing in stranger), starting on vol 1 of war and peace now, have nothing to read winnies-wise or at least none that catch my eye after Sworn to Destruction... don't feel like reading max level anymore and the others I'm following are either on and off in hiatus or unannounced dropped.

Which stories have you read that rewrite a main character's entire personality and turn him or her into a completely different entity?
Since nobody else has read Infinite Realm then I will spoil:
During the fourth volume, all of the strongest characters in the setting gather to assault a 'Dome'--a literal dome, one of many, that has popped up containing lots and lots of monsters and Big Boss figure.
The Big Boss mindrapes everybody and places them within an illusion that lasts about 3 days.
One of the two main characters--Zach, the Nigga Knight--spends roughly 4000 years within this mindrape illusion reality, where he enlightens himself upon Time and whatnot, often giving lectures to stacked piles of rocks and stones.
Eventually, he became the something term Sage of Time and busts out, saving everybody and beating that current Big Bad but he forgets his entire past personality, which includes the other main character and his childhood best friend, who took the cultivator path, and in retaliation to a government mandated assault killed his wife. Also forgot his lizard serial killing sociopath wife

how bold of you to assume you'll have fans
>>
are webnovels falling off?
>>
>>25298741
Royalroad is starting to decay a bit, but no. Webnovels as a whole are growing bigger by the day.
>>
>>25298309
>lead my reader down completely fruitless rabbit holes
Readers have grown extremely wary of this and will bitch and whine, preemptively drop you, and write reviews saying you've lost the plot at any point when it isn't fully clear what's going to happen next and why it has to happen.

I don't really like cultivation but Tem Thousand Tragedies is fun, mostly because I loved MoL, and I loved Essence of Cultivation. Any recommendations?

The Years of Apocalypse by UraniumPhoenix
It has at least two trannies though.

I call cap. trad romantasy is the only industry that's growing because women aren't getting married and they're coping with their lives through that genre.
>>
>>25298789
If you are a western woman, sure. Webnovels are the only reading space men haven't been pushed out of and are regularly mined for adaptations.
>>
I finally get why people want to read about overpowered MCs. It's competency porn like John Wick or Jack Reacher.
>>
>>25298799
I like the ones in between, where the MCs know exactly what they need to do to be OP and competent, but still need to get the actual power. Regression, meta knowledge, and the like.
>>
>>25298734
Jacques is still the MC.
>>
>>25298776
Ah, I got this recommendation a while ago and bounced off it, unfortunately. Thanks though.
>>
>>25298767
I've enjoyed "Surprisingly Enough(NOT), Common Sense Is Overpowered in Cliché Cultivation World" so far
the rewrite, specifically
the original was also fine

You might like Records of a Daoist Immortal in the Great Crusade. Weird 40k/cultivation crossover on.. SB? Irregular updates.

Seen much worse.

I'm >>25298854
Started on this
Good so far
Thanks
>>
>>25298776
Two? I only remember one guy who is referred to as "them", it's such a weird thing to include when it's not even explained at all in the story
>>
cultivation is so gay
>>
>>25298748
It's not growing that fast in the west, always lagged behind and will hit a ceiling faster. Though I'm sure Hollyweird will come around looking for ip to exploit eventually.
Westoid zoomers can barely read and got no attention spans, so you're dependent on millenials for the most part (which is why RR is so fucking Reddit) but they're only getting older.
>>
>>25299009
Why would you want zoomie readers anyway?
>>
Just browsed through 'best rated', 'trending' and 'rising stars' Books on RR and the majority of them are barely concealed AI slop or female protagonist, lgbtq+ shit. I went through multiple pages for each category and could not find a single pearl. I'm done with this website. AI and RR's popularity killed my comfy reading afternoons.

I was about to complain on RR forums, before realizing the only people posting are the same aspiring slop writers. Literally no one is reading on that forum, all they think about is doing a 'shameless plug'. Or spamming vapid shit with their signature redirecting to the novel they're currently writing.

I tried browsing spacebattles instead and the interface is shit. Which is exactly why I will stay on SB. i'm pretty sure everyone hates it but the offensive interface keeps retards away.

>>25299262
>site formatted exactly like a PHP forum, but for reading stories
Yikes...
>>
>>25299262
God willing the retardrush dies down in a year or two and RR settles into a less faggy stable point
>>
>>25299286
I'm afraid the enshittification line only goes up with time on X axis.
>>
>>25298584
There's a lot going on if you want to give it a try. The setup is that Earth gets SYSTEM'd for a year or some short time before everybody is teleported to the Infinite Realm(TM). It combines cultivation, Classes, and Skills, within the same world so you'll like a Level 50 class Faggot fight a Realm 3 cultivating faggot.
It does go deep into the stats and I always skim over update screens, lists of abilities, etc. But if you especially enjoy big batches of data then you'll love Infinite Realm.
>>
>>25299323
you'll see like a*
>>
Do people only read duoluo fanfic nowadays?

>>25299262
RR has been absolutely garbage for along time, don't read anything written by a westerner
>>
>>25299340
now do the second half of your post where you samefag shill some dogshit chinkslop like RI
>>
>>25299345
I am way passed mainstream chinkslop and only read the freshest AI translated stories
>>
>>25299262
>I was about to complain on RR forums, before realizing the only people posting are the same aspiring slop writers
all discussion spaces are like that now
hustle slave griftfags infest any space they can access and anyone can write a sloppy webnovel
>>
>>25299262
Big issue is RR's algorithm rewards that, and it's already solidified itself into a Steam-esque "Not a monopoly but the competition all keep shooting themselves in the dick" position. Anything particularly original requires a lot of author push, and that's typically not for free. If there were a similarly-scaled site that wasn't AI-dense and primarily English readerbase I'd be posting my winnie there instead.
