*READ THE GUIDE*

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data from images when they're uploaded to the website from your phone, including the orientation display tag. To solve this, save your images out separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the image itself for you.
One commonly used app that works well on Android:

Quick repost, because I posted right before the last thread died:

Anons, I know we've had this question a few times, but I never really got a complete answer.
What is the best place to buy P-bandai kits? (price wise and reliability wise). Are there any good sites where you can buy/order them directly or should one use a proxy (and if so, what proxy sites are good)?
>>
>>16923715
Results will probably be in this thread, I guess?
>>
>>16923767
Wait is this copypasta? I swear I've seen this exact question several times. The answer is always Gentei kits or Mandarake. You could always try making internet friends with someone who lives in Japan.
>>

>Wait is this copypasta?
>Quick repost, because I posted right before the last thread died
I literally just asked this question last thread, but it died a minute later so I reposted it here. It's not a fucking copy pasta, it's a genuine question. Since I've never ever bothered with P-bandai stuff in the past I've never ever payed attention to people discussing where to get it. So now that I do want a P-bandai kit I'm asking the question.
>The answer is always Gentei kits or Mandarake
Good to know.

Well after over a week of voting we have our winners for the Build Divers Groupbuild. Congrats to Doctor Gallass for coming in first in almost every category!

Gonna write up a post for the next theme right now.
>>
>>16923911
>>
So as always the other four themes from the previous final poll to decide what group build theme we work on are in by default. These were

>Leo Groupbuild (Build an entry using either the HGAW Leo or HGBD Leo NPD as a base.)
>14th Gundam Fight Groupbuild (Build a Gundam themed around a country of your choice)
>Gruntify Groupbuild (Take a special snowflake suit and grunt it up as much as possible to make it a mass-production model)
>Stealth/Streamlined Groupbuild (Build a mobile suit focused for Tactical Espionage Action)

Though that's not to say any of the other themes from last season's poll aren't eligible too. If you see one from here you like or have your own idea for group build then post it!

My vote is on Gruntification but tis the season to be spooky so that theme works too.
>>
>>16924088
Some of his prices slightly beat out Mandarake by a few dollars, and some are more expensive by a few dollars. Just depends on who you want to go with and for what kit.
>>
>>16923710
congrats Doc, i knew the would be yours. I am more surprised that my "engel schlachter" got any votes.
>>
>>16924094
Markers are trash and take a lot more time for a shittier job, nothing but a noob trap. If you're going to gloss coat first before lining and top coating then go with Tamiya Accent Panel. If you're not going to gloss coat first then go with Mr Weathering Color.

Tamiya Accent Panel has enamel thinner mixed in which will destroy your pieces if you use too much on bare plastic. Mr Weathering Color is oil paint mixed with lighter fluid which is a bit safer for bare plastic.
>>
>>16923911

No-grade Strike, probably the worst of the three no-grades I have.
>>
>>16924123
No, even you if you do it the half ass way like that video the results and speed still won't beat Tamiya or Mr Weathering. The fact that you can just dab the brush and move on, along with cleaner lines right off the brush from the paint flowing beats out markers any day There's also the fact that marker tips won't fit in a lot of places leaving you to to brush on a tiny of bit of thinner with swabs anyways on some parts with markers.

Planetary ground warfare.
No fancy flying, space weapons or other space/air/under water related gimmicks. Just suits made for boots in the dirt action that see heavy usage during planetary war.
Settings like: Dessert, jungle, urban, European/US mainland (no full ocean or arctic builds but water proofing is fine)
Can be long ranged artilery or close to mid range combat units. Something a bit like 8th MS style.
>>
>>16924194
This, soo much this!

So how many of you have built the 80s and early 90s kits and what were your opinion of them?

The only one I built was the Zaku tank and it was really fun (cost only 5-6 usd too), but man the parts were misaligned and my torso doesn't even fit into the body (anyone has an idea for a support to use in order to hold both inbetween?). Been wanting to get more, but last I checked the price on them is up and they are out of stock again in most places. Psychommu Zaku and the Flipper look interesting build too (flipper looks alot like a suit straight out of votoms) and kinda excited to get those. So yeah, what impressions do you guys have?
>>
>>16923579
>>16923632
I recently got the Unicorn Ed. MG Geara Doga since it didn't cost me much more than the regular one that's already hard to find. Haven't built it yet, but looking at the box contents, there are a couple of differences besides the sleeves that are worth mentioning. The kit also comes with an alternate shield connector that allows you to position the shield in more than one place around the arm. And waterslides are included instead of stickers and dry transfers.

If you're so inclined, you can still build it sleeveless like the original kit, though I'm not sure how easy it is to swap on and off the sleeves at will.
>>
>>16924333

is there any funnel effect parts for the RG Sazabi and MG Qubeley?
>>

Nope. From what I'm aware, the only kits that include funnel effects of any sort are the MG Nu Gundam and new Re/100 Jagd Doga
>>
>>16924333

>>
>>16924333
the only stickers the normal Geara Doga comes with anyways are for the rifles sights and mono eye. the dry transfers are medium and large sized military styled numbers and the shield emblem.

>>16924410
The big numbers and emblems are dry transfers, yes, but it appears that the smaller caution decals are stickers.

That does remind me, though, that the Unicorn Ver. does still have the same foil stickers and new white color separation stickers for the solid-black sleeve parts.
>>
>>16924394

They cut a lot of corners to get it out in time.
Poor articulation even though the base astray kit is great.
Even omitting the beam saber, it's main weapon so it can't dual wield like it does prominently in the show.
At least it looks good though so I'll be getting it to do it justice, just not anytime soon.

They did the same with Sengoku Astray, right?
>>
>>16924611
>>16924611
>Oh, how'd they fuck it up?
Even without the cape, here are a lot of unnecessary greebles like the brown thighpads and back-of-the-knee flaps that hinder articulation and the white shoulderpad limits movement to 90s gunpla tier
>>
>>16924619
>90s gunpla tier
What is Bandai even doing? They did similar stuff with Trisian while releasing beautiful kits like the GBF GM and the HGAC Leo.
>>
>>16924619
I hear you can't even get two kits to make it symmetrical. What's even the point?
>>
>>16924619
Looking at the model, can't you just cut the thigh-pads towards the top to increase mobility? Wow that's a mess, Bandai even used that cheap white plastic too.

I'm gonna get my first MG soon and I wanna get an opinion on if I should get the F91 v2, the Kampfer, or the Hyaku Shiki v2. Are any of these much better than the others? Or do any of them have some critical design flaw?

>>
>>16924671
>>16924690

>>

I think he's referencing how garbage their website has become since they updated it. Pages freeze or fail to load, the way they lay out the product lists sucks, its all around harder to use, people have been reporting some sort of bug where when you remove an item from the cart it takes out the wrong item, and it gives you less info on the pages.
>>
>>16924671
f91 is pretty solid and its cheap to get some string leds to put some leds on the back. Though its smaller since in universe its like 15 meters tall. Though the hands are kinda annoying but you can try using third party hands.

Hey /gpg/, consider the following... theoretically:

How would you financially turn around a neighborhood hobbies and model store whose customer base is mostly made of old people? Just to give you an idea what you're working with, the model store is mostly military models, and a huge assorted stock of decades old kits, vintage Monograms and Revells with a mishmash of the odd Polar Lights or Mobius model kit, alongside retro movie/sci fi/superhero vinyl statue kits. Some recent Tamiya car and bike kits are jumbled in the shelf stock of the older kits. Gunpla somehow is shelved at the very very back of the store, with all the other beginner friendly kit lineups. The store connects with customers and its community by veterans' commemorations and historical days.

How would you try to get the store to be sustainable and get profits back up by getting younger people into the hobby?
>>
>>16925660
In my opinion, its probably impossible to attract a younger audience to anything besides stuff like gundam and even then, the idea of having to cut pieces off a runner, denub/sand the pieces, possibly do a few painting touch ups is pretty unappealing to today's younger generation. You mention that the store connects with it's customers and community so maybe workshops where the veterans can break down the process of building a model kit to young people? The hobby store near me does this although I don't think it will do anything besides give kids something to do instead of playing on their smartphones. One major factor would be the cost of hobby supplies, shit adds up and usually the hobby of plastic model building would be a thing to someone at least 20+ who has a job to pay for this hobby.
>>
>>16925692
For me, the major problem that my local neighbor hobby shops faces is that they're literally stationed in the middle of nowhere. An example would be my favorite Gunpla place to go which is literally right next to two hobo camps , another would be the place where I get my hobby paints which is located in a practically dead part of the city, an empty business building area.

Locating to an area that gets a lot of foot traffic would help A LOT, one example would be a hobby and card shop that I used to go to a lot but stopped going because it was too far just located to a popular mall I live by and they've been getting almost 3x the amount of customers compared to their old location which was a old dying mall (Rip Vallco, you brought me many memories)

>>16925660
>One major factor would be the cost of hobby supplies, shit adds up
That would be somewhat of an easy problem to fix, literally just sell Model Kit Starter Sets.
>>
>>16925692
Concern are veterans/old people going all gatekeeping on the young people? How are they gonna hold back if those people decide to start with gunpla or SDs? How would you set up the layout of a hobby store to attract young people to look around and buy?
>>
>>16923964
I have the MG and the only weapon it has trouble holding up is the Beam Rifle. Aside from not being able to hold up that one weapon, I really love that kit for stability
>>
>>16925724
What to do with a piled up store inventory of decades-old kits, that possibly go all the way back to the 70s even? We're talking about kits that have dodgy molding and require lots of work to fix, we're talking as beginner-unfriendly as hard as that whole bunch of Calvin and Hobbes strips about that one Phantom kit.
>>
>>16925724
This seems to be a thing, the hobby stores near me take a goddamn hour to drive to, all of them are located far away from higher density areas, probably has to do with the cost of rent or some shit.
>>
>>16925732
Perhaps there is something wrong being done if the at-risk hobby shop is in a moderate foot traffic area... with the neighboring store spaces being all fairly active and community-friendly, with some inviting crafts stores, maker spaces, a robotics place and even a gaming/FLGS a block up?

Maybe the store display front needs to be something else besides a bunch of model kit boxes stacked with a big veterans commemoration backdrop?
>>
>>16925735
Anon, it's a niche hobby. Not much you can do, especially in digital age.
>>
>>16925731
>What to do with a piled up store inventory of decades-old kits, that possibly go all the way back to the 70s even?
Literally just make them discounted. Better to make some money than no money at all.
>>
>>16925750
How far down from $55, 70ish tops shelf price should such things be marked down?
>>
>>16925753
If it straight up came from the 70s I'd probably just sell it online if it was rare. If nobody's ever really took interest into the thing from the 70s I'd sell it for 50% just to make some money back, if it's a popular item but just harder to pick up because of the price I'd sell it for 25% off
>>
>>16925731
Why not just sell it online from a store website or ebay

Stock general modelling supplies of several brands rather than just kits. From how you described it, you can't even get good paints at this place. My local hobby store has Tamiya, Vallejo, Mr. Hobby, etc. They also make a lot of their money off of selling hobby-grade electronics.
Plamo is a niche hobby and nothing will fix that, the best option is to diversify.

People like to blow shit out of proportion here or regurgitate false information of kits and tools they don't even own. You should know this by now. The thing is far from falling apart while handling it.

The only problem I had with the kit was the awful nub marks and stress marks on the wings from the stiff ass black gloss plastic that basically cracks and crumbles while you're snipping things off the runners. The wings are also factory high gloss so sanding it won't do, you'll end up painting it to look good. 8k grit liquid sandpaper won't even match it.

You definitely need action stand though, the wings are pretty heavy and it will tip over. I'd recommend buying the DL decals too instead of using the stickers. The reflective foil option they have for the Amatsu Mina looks really good on it. The sheet comes with gold and silver options.

Personally I use a modeling knife to cut the pieces and clean the nubs. I think you guys are overreacting. The sets are made so you don't have to paint them, and the japs have done such amazing work that the robots look really good right out of the box.
Perhaps we have a different perspective. For me gunplas are buildable action figures, not scifi military static models. They are super articulated, they have accessories, you can mix and match. Their prices are comparable to their "western" counterparts but the overal quality is superior. Just take a transformer and look at it's gaps and moldlines. Sure it's nice to customize your toys, giving them a paintjob and LED lights. I'd love to have a transmetal-looking shiny gundam. But it's not necessary to enjoy them. Shitting on people for not painting their already coloured toys is insane.

Just your typical Rare Earth magnets, they come in a variety of sizes by millimeter. If you have a shop near you that deals in Warhammer or other wargaming stuff they might have some in stock there.
>how specifically did you attach them?
The set I bought came with a drill bit for a pin vise that's the same size as the magnets. Just drill a deep enough hole in the plastic and superglue it in place (You might need to make a support to hold the magnet in place if the part is too hallow on the inside).

If it ain't God Hands then you're just using it to cut the nubs down to 1-2mm+ anyways. It won't make a real difference. I have two different Tamiya nippers that I rarely use and the cut quality's still pretty bad, it still pulls and tears the plastic. If you really need to sharpen it then grind the back of the blades down with 400-800 grit sandpaper on really flat surface or a 1k grit whetstone.

No, I (the guy who's going to receive multiple 00 Sky's due to a shipping error) have also ordered from them multiple times in the past.
As far as I'm concerned they're quite reliable for the most part.
Just not this time.
>>
>>16927923
They're extremely hit or miss. I had two bad shipments and two good shipments. It was enough to make me not buy from anymore though.

Before I ordered from them a few months back I checked their reviews on Google and a lot of complaints came from leddit which had a bunch of problems with their shipments and preorders. The owner even accidentally posted a fake good review on his main account instead of a dummy account in a complaint thread there. So be wary of good reviews you see, he probably is the one downboating complains too.

Two of my shipments were sent parcel select which was the slowest option possible. It can take up to two weeks because of it being stick at the San Diego USPS hub and that service manhandles boxes. First bad shipment was paint which took almost two weeks to arrive because it was sent parcel select instead of expedited. Second bad shipment was a $100 kit that was was packed in the flimsiest and thinnest box possible with no padding at all. The thing arrived crushed because once again it was sent parcel select and with bad packaging. Luckily nothing was broken inside, pieces only some gnarly stress marks on the nubs but it's going to be painted anyways.
>>
>>16928288
Did you send them a complaint? They seem to be pretty good at trying to sort things out with customers if anything.
>>
>>16928300

I have the Premium. A little bit dusty from sitting on my shelf for a few months. It was one of my first few kits I built when I started so it's just lined and top coated with a rattlecan.

Difficulty wise it wasn't a hard build. The hips are notorious for being easy to break just and you can see why when you build it. The hands also have trouble holding the rifle as you've probably seen from reviews, the loose wrists don't help. The articulation is quite good though for a thicc frame. The plastic is also very very stiff so you'll see stress marks from nubs lingering unless you paint it.

You should probably just buy the regular version and an action base unless you really want that red stand and glossy box art. They're both the same kit except the premium has a stand included and a big sheet of decals for 6 other Wing kits which you might not ever use. Still highly recommend it either way because it's one detailed as fuck MG.
