Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

-= ACE CUSTOM GROUPBUILD =-

Build, customize, and paint a grunt mobile suit up for use by an ace pilot.
>You are taking the role of the Ace Pilot here - You're making the design choices when it comes to loadout, paint scheme, and suit customizations.
>Think about what your Ace specializes in, is he all in on offensive power, speed and maneuverability, or bulk and defense?
>While your pilot is an ace, he's not so special that he's getting super secret prototypes like Gundams or Mobile Armors. Keep your grunt relatively grounded to whatever setting it's from.

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

He is talking about the difference between jarheads and literall commanders like Char or Sirocco. A good foot soldier is still a foot soldier. I know you are trying to pull an extremely disingenious argument right now, but i will bite. Kampfer is not an ace unit, it is a half assed police tier robot designed for hit-and-run with 0 survivability. These kind of niche low tier mech is not that uncommon in Gundam, you got Cancer in Gundam Wing, Dennan Gei in F91, Guncannon in 1979 show and more.

Well, that is pretty misguided. It's an extremely high performance unit. Nothing about it is "cheap," it's very high spec. It's just meant to be easily disassembled and assembled. Its actual performance is very forward thinking, adopting a similar mentality to later MS design in minimizing armour for mobility. It's arguably the best MS Zeon made during the war, kneecapped only by being so high performance it can't keep up sustained engagements.

Not that anon but you don't know the middle tier MS? It is not always the clear cut ace and grunt, sometimes they just make a limited run, low performanced robot like this guy.

I always thought the Kampfer was meant to be a guerrilla warfare type MS. In 0080 it was smuggled in parts to Side 6, apparently easy to assemble and lacked any real armor outside of maybe a coat of that anti-beam coating stuff they started slathering on shields at the end of the OYW

that's like claiming the gelgoog shouldn't count as a grunt because it's a high performance machine when it was introduced

look at it another way, would you consider gouf to be mass production grunt when there weren't that many built before it was replaced in favor of the dom? gouf still reached a stage where it was given a production model number, same as the kampfer
>>
>>23750064
It is. It's a special operation machine. It minimized armour and maximized speed and mobility.
The real thing comes down to what you consider a grunt, and what the groupbuild terminology is concerned with it. It's undoubtedly a high spec, rare machine. We don't have numbers but it's pretty likely they made single digits with how few of them ever show up in anything. But ultimately it was a machine with some production run, not a complete one-off like the Zeong. That said, we've seen more RX-78-x then we have MS-18s.
>>
>>23750066
Oh that's perfect. Thanks anon, love you.
>>
>>23750061
>it's very high spec.
It is not. Kampfer was designed to runnaway because it can't survive mild damage.
>>
>>23750072
Judging from the anime, i feel like Kampfer is worse than a Grunt because Zaku could last longer infront of Alex Gundam while Kampfer got shredded into scrap by the gatling.
>>
>>23750070
It's not really like the Gelgoog at all honestly. Of other major Zeon MS it's closer to the Gyan. An MS they thought about producing lots of but didn't and made basically none of them.
>>
>>23750063

Apparently now in a lot of extended lore there was 2.5 Zeongs made by the end of the OYW
>Zeong that Char piloted
>Zeong that was packed away with the retreating Zeon which ended up at Axis and was completed into a Perfect Zeong where they realized its short comings and used data gathered to improve on MS psycommu miniaturization

>>
>>23750075
Yea it is. It has light armor, but basically all Zeon MS do because they're made of bog standard steel or titanium. A Gelgoog or Zeong would go down the same way to the Alex's 90mm autocannons. The GM Command and Customs also use 90mm rifles. 90mm is firmly in the realm of anti-MS weaponry.
>>
>>23750094
I would rather neck myself.
>>
>>23750081
Hard to tell unless there was a measuring tool next to them to measure them both. If the Loto was 1/100 it should be 2cm taller than the R-44
>>
>>23750096
Despite having inferior armour material a few Zeon designs are specifically pretty well armoured. Gelgoogs and Doms notably. We see them losing to the gatlings in the simulation anyways though so it's a moot point they definitely aren't protected enough to defend against them how it happened in the show no matter what.
>>
>>23750065
>Is there some kind of secret or rules to mixing paint that I'm just ignorant of?
Red + blue + yellow = black. You should nudge your color in desired direction by adding a little bit of simple primary color at a time instead of mixing multiple complex tones at once which can easily result in mud.
Be mindful of whether your primaries are warm or cool.
>>
>>23750102
Doms aren't heavily armored, they weigh the same as a zaku but are larger, that just means bigger internal space for reactor and fuel
>>
>see a mention of the Kampfer
>like it but wonder why it's so fragile

>>
>>23750104
The Dom is specifically called out as having heavy armour protection in basically every source and is referred to as a "heavy" mobile suit
>>
>>23750111
it's called heavy because it carries heavy weapons

>having heavy armour protection
fucking laughable since it still dies to short machine gun bursts
>>
>>23750105
It's lightly armored to achieve high speed. The thing's just a ton of thrusters.
>>
>>23750096
>A Gelgoog or Zeong would go down the same way to the Alex's 90mm autocannons.
The arm gatling is a high bar to pass but Kampfer as whole is just so fragile, beside pulling stealth kills, that thing can't last a close ranged battle. No shield, no armor, limited amount of firepower for a long operation. It is still one of my favourite Izubuchi design, but killing some GMs is not that impressive in my opinion.

Not him, but don't forget that those "machine guns" are like 120mm auto cannons. Pic related shooting 20 rounds at you in 3 seconds. Nobody really appreciates how ridiculous everything in Gundam kind of is. The vulcans on the Gundam for example fire 60mm, again, that's another tank round and Gundam shoots dual ones from its fuggin head.
>>

>>
>>23750115
Oh, I see, thank you.
I guess it was just fucked over because it wasn't doing space combat, huh
>>
>>23750113
It's a heavy mobile suit because it weighs at 80 tons (90 originally) and once again it's specifically called out for having heavier armour. Just because it's not impervious doesn't mean it doesn't have it, and having lower quality armour materials doesn't change they put more on it.
>>
>>23750130
It lost because Misha lost. Its capabilities don't really play much into its demise, it got surprise gunned down after having gotten cocky thinking he'd won.

>>
>>23750133

Initially I gathered various 30MM optional parts and started to mix them up but turned out that a lot were not really compatible so I kept replacing them with polystyrene elements, started adding some on my own and in the end it's more scratchbuild than 30MM custom - basically what's 30MM proper are torso (still had to drill inside to fit the neck since Bandai leave lots of Spinatio-type spares but not the old ones), part of the head, jumpjets on the back, hips base structure and legs. Previous attempts were even bigger. Spare heads Bandai provide in few optional 30MM kits have oddly placed connection points so I had to make it larger than planned and still start with wide structure made out of several polystyrene elements glued together and then cut since otherwise structure would break apart.

I've built the HGUC Delta Plus, it's kind of a piece of crap. It's molded entirely in purple because they based the kit on the novel version, and it has shit for limb motion. It doesn't do a lot in the show, but it's a cool guy. It has a little bit of an awkward 3D problem in that there's just a lot of shit going on with the backpack and head, and it's awkward to move the head because there are fins snagging on missiles between fins and binders. The head sculpt is also not the coolest it could be at all. The one thing to say you aren't seeing from most pictures advertising it alone is that it is a big boy, it's the same head height as Nu, and with the stands for the arms it comes with cool accessories overall.

Hm. Maybe I'll sacrifice it to the "well, I tried" gods. Someone want to let me borrow all their airbrush shit to see if I like painting? I'll figure out the putty and sanding part.

The eyes end eye rows are seperate pieces you put in from behind, if you use the 'long' part G1 27 it becomes flush with the face en you put stickers on, o guess you can smoothie that out with putty to have a blank canvas were to put the eyes. It also comes with two clear lenses and a short eye part but I did not try those.

the good:
>the most insane collection of mecha IPs out there that puts SRW to shame
>sculpting in general is very well done and often involves the original designers (same with the boxart)
>pre-painted parts
>surprisingly durable water slides

the bad:
>prices are becoming beyond good and evil - over 7000 yen for one of those 13.5cm tall Buddy Complex figs?! For 5000 more you can get a 30cm tall Mazinkaiser from Tron Model with metal frame parts, LEDs and a fuckton of accessoires
>quality, size and engineering is all over the place - on one hand you get absolute bangers like Galient, Gladion or Take no Yamikazuchi and on the other halfbaked stuff like Daioja, Escaflowne or Orguss
>while the plastic quality isn't bad, the tolerances for the joints are almost universally ungodly and need to be sanded down a bit, otherwise you run into issues like hairline cracks developing over time due to internal stress or the joints being so stiff that you end up ripping off a peg or ball by accident
>>
The more I look at reviews on this guy, the more I don't want to get it. The horse hides the fact that the main mech itself only has 2 FUCKING ACCESSORIES. Then you have the Motor Nuclear Nezha and Gan Jiang which have an ungodly amount of accessories for half the price. You literally just pay for the horse.

>>

You probably don't need to if it's a Bandai release but if it's from a small time Chinese studio, it might be a good idea.

The old conventional wisdom was to do a light detergent wash of the runners to get rid of any residual mold release, which can screw with paint and/or cause skin rashes (which happened with a Chinesium 1/144 "RG" Nightingale not that long ago). I don't think it's necessary to do it to get rid of leftover plastic dust from sanding.

As the other anon said, not really necessary with Bandai or other big Japanese companies since they do their due diligence. It's mainly the Chinese you need to worry about.

ACV poster boy and Gen3 9balls are the two Koto kits I've assembled long ago and one issue I had with them is miserable posing, some joints are just a single peg or poorly gripped ball joint or a clam shell that's being pulled apart from the inside with a piece you're moving. ACV is particularly troublesome simply due to game's art style with bulky gribbly bits hanging on a simple hinge, shit really likes to fall off. I gotta give him a reassembly with proper glue in strategic spots.
Haven't broken anything or had any issues assembling them even with my caveman handling back in the days but plastic do be squeaky. Decent portion of it is ABS.
Also snapped 30MM Nightfall Raven, super sturdy and with tight joints other than retarded fron of pilebunker just sitting there. Agreed on shit ass gate placements, it's almost comical sometimes like they are fucking with you. Head camera is the only instance of truly retarded tiny parts though. Articulation is kinda meh.

Ah, yes, resin minis. Since some companies started using Unicool, details are crispy and rich in numbers. Even Corvus Belli stopped using Siocast they experimented for a while and move towards Unicool as well. Pic related, Marut on the right might have excellent design but what is it good for when quality is low and cast even miss details on front chest that cannot be scribed because material behave like rubber?
>>
>>23751144
Drop the dumb sarcasm. First of all you can paint directly on both without primer using the airbrush or rattlecan. Second, i'm just stating fact that glossy surface and resin will always have bad adhesion, it is not a subjective topic to argue.
>>
>>23751153

I have a Valimar model kit and it's basically the same as this kit. It's really funny to me that one conceit of this line was parts being pre-painted to gurantee high accuracy to the source material and then the only pre-painted parts in the kit are the horn and tiny little green lights on larger parts that would have just been silver plastic and easier for the end consumer to fix or ignore.

Meanwhile the trim detailing, a hard part for a new modeler to get a grasp on how to fix is just left completely unattended.

A real missing the forest for the trees moment. Coloring the trim probably would have escalated the cost quite a bit more though.
>>
>>23751197
Whatever floats your boat but a lot of minis made in metal also are quite rich in details. Resin at least minimise amount of mold/casting errors - I prefer when details sinking is caused by applying too much paint rather than poor quality cast.

Blue - core Gundam storyline.
Green - spinoffs, must watch, not very important to the main events but are the best Gundam has to offer. In case of 0083 only really for the visuals though.
IGLOO - Zeon wunderwaffe wankery with zero plot and Playstation 3 graphics.
The rest - compilation movies and utterly worthless 3 minute shorts. If you don't like the old TV series then just don't watch them, movies aren't a good alternative.
Lase UC (past Unicorn) doesn't matter. The further anything is removed from One Year War the less relevant it is.

There's also Thunderbolt and Origin of questionable canonicity but they are late releases with shitty nu-CGI anyway so don't bother until you're done watching/skipping the "essentials".

Funny you say that when unicorn is basically completely and utterly irrelevant to UC as a whole, it has zero development on the greater universe, every importan character dies and every important mobile suit in it had to be written out of the series in some (often stupid) way.

Late UC at least has its own continuity where things actually happen and leave lasting consequences.

You're not meant to use them on harder plastics. On top of that, the single-bladed version is a finishing nipper. You're supposed to use a normal pair to snip the piece off the runner, then the single-blade to clip the remaining plastic from your piece. They're unnecessary if you plan to paint.

100% old molds, huh? Embarassing.
>>
>>23752542
MG FAZZ is not lore accurate anyway. so, it is basically reusing ZZ moulds
>>

FAZZ is just a mildly redesigned FA ZZ with a big gun. The artstyle was never meant for the mainline UC version. They should have just make new armor parts for it instead of lazily slapping old parts together like this.
>>
am i retarded? wasn't this white in the movie instead of green
>>
>>23752547
in lore, FAZZ is just a big MS that was sculpted to look like a ZZ with full armor, it lacks functionality like a core booster.the armor is actually bolted as the MS is built up, not removable like the model kit the FAZZ just re-use the ZZ moulds if we get autistic about it.

just think of it as FAZZ is re-using ZZ Gundam FA moulds, but FAZZ managed to come out earlier so you wont get rabies autistically screeching about it.

>>23752542

>>
>>23752596
NTA, but basically if you want it to be able to transform or split the FA ZZ, you need the parts from an entirely separate ZZ or Enhanced ZZ?
>>
>>23752590
Even if you are not, single blade nippers of any kind are a blessing since they greatly reduce one of worst aspects of building aka nub removal. With normal nippers I had to leave a bit to avoid stressing material with cutting, sand the rest with file, use 2-3 grades of sandpaper/sponge to level it up. Now I simply cut with nippers, level with knife and run backblade, significantly faster.

Only argue against GodHands is, aside from price, how their sharpness indeed make them quite fragile and easy to break, unlike much more reasonably priced options from Mr Hobby, DSPIAE or MENG, that are marginally worse at cutting.
>>

Stein has a bunch of improvements from original Sinanju kit. Meanwhile both FAZZ and ZZ are saggy polycap mess that can use some upgrades, yet they changed nothing.

technically no. you just have to swap out the parts. the backpack runner for ZZ has the original parts for the ZZ arms.

the reason why FAZZ arms is different is because the articulation for the arms and the indent to fit in the armor parts. the FAZZ arms have an elbow twist to accomodate articulation despite the armor bulk, in the expense of the transformation gimmick

This dude goes over all the differences between the ZZ, Enhanced ZZ, FAZZ and Full Armor ZZ kits.

Long story short, the Full Armor ZZ is about 95% as-advertised, the Enhanced ZZ kit with the FAZZ armor parts mounted on top. Except, there are pieces that need to be replaced on the chest, shoulder, crotch, side skirts and legs to accommodate the armor (mainly latch points, but also replacing pieces that would otherwise get in the way with smaller ones), and the forearms have to be completely swapped out as per >>23752685 . Using the ZZ and FAZZ kits, you already have 99.9% of what you need to build the Full Armor ZZ, with the only exceptions being the little extensions under the Hyper Beam Saber mounts on the backpack, and the back skirt on the Enhanced ZZ that has to be swapped out for a similar piece on the FAZZ anyway to mount the skirt armor and big gun.

I'm hoping that in the spirit of issuing a new kit, Bandai are going to redesign the forearms so that you can detach the wing shields and mount the armor on top instead of outright replacing the entire forearm. But knowing Bandai, they're just going to have you swap out the forearms.
>>
>>23752766
You can mount the wings on the slimmed down forearms regardless.

I wish that Bandai start to put metal screws and even metal parts back in some plastic model kit instead of being floppy pieces of shit

it would fix a lot of problems like the Freedom 2.0 breaking
>>
>>23752789
Best I can do is make a floppy kit then sell you (maybe) DLC to fix it afterwards.
>>
>>23752789
>snapshidders pose their weak ecopla kits in various ballerina poses and splits
>shit breaks
>they buy a replacement kit
>rinse and repeat
it's business, baybeeee! Bandai-sama always wins.
>>
>>23752787
Yes, but it requires liberal use of a joint strengthening pen since the port is designed for the armor parts, plus the FAZZ forearm can't actually transform.
>>
>>23752789
chinks make a lot of 3d printed/metal replacement parts

>I still don't know what factors contribute to the "frosting effect", that people get. Maybe temperature? Because it's certainly not humidity.
the humidity doesn't help but the temperature is the the main thing, semigloss/matte/flat works by forming tiny bubbles on the surface that pop while it's drying, if it's too cold there isn't enough energy to pop the bubbles causing the frosting
>>
>>23752820
More often than not there's no proper screw to tighten to your liking on those
>>
>>23752789
metal parts are cool for maybe a week until you realize that they're absolutely dogshit for friction joints and become even floppier overtime than just slathering some glue

>>
>>23752186
I built one of these. It's not that bad actually. The plastic is kinda hard and the upper arm fit on really tight but it looks good when you paint it. It's far from the worst quality plastic I've seen on a bootleg.
>>
>>23752969
That little bit of color separation? that you did is all this robot needed to look good. bandai should have done that out of the box. I know it wouldn't be anime/line art accurate but the kit itself already isn't anyway.
>>
>>23752973
I just preshaded it with red and welded a few parts. All the color separation is what it has out of the box.
>>
>>23752975
but I can clearly see you used darker shades all over.
>>
>>23752976
That's the red preshading. Every orange part was painted with the same orange mix applied the same way.
>>
>>23752980
Either way, that's what I'm referring to looking good. Instead of it being just the one ugly off yellow. The orange arms, etc.
>>
>>23752984
it's a fun kit. If you get one, post about it and I'll dig out the recipe for the orange I mixed for you. Just be prepared to do some serious welds on the feet and shoulders.
>>

>>
>>23753012
Yeah, most likely.
>>
>>23752766
if there's some huge change in a "refresh" of a kit, bandai usually advertises it, like how they showed Sinanju Stein Narrative Ver Ka's trim design. nothing of that sort was advertised for Full Armor ZZ, so expect the arm to be non-transformable like the FAZZ
>>
Can my GM use a super fancy beam rifle? Its destructive power is equivalent to a beam magnum
>>
>>23753015
If that's the case, we'll probably see a Chinese aftermarket kit that gives us a forearm that can do the G-Fortress transformation, has the extra elbow range built in, and can detach the wing shields to attach the armor.

What's the deal with panel lining bootlegs? Will it eat up the plastic?
>>

it will melt the plastic and create mustard gas
panel lining is for models made by Bandai only
>>
>>23753023
kino battle damage
>>
>>23753024
Make sure to seal the plastic off first. The stuff has a lot more stress in the plastic than the real kits do so it'll snap if you give it any reason to. Water based primers are really good for this.
>>
>>23753023
I'd try plastic cement, then sand, scribe to restore the face vents and paint, but it looks like you're snapbuilding so I don't know if that'll help you.
>>
>>23753023
if you can't do it yourself you better send for a replacement piece from bandai IF it's not a long time backlog kit because of the purchase/receipt time limit they have

None of this is true. Temp might have an effect, most likely not drying or adhering correctly, but not frosting. Semis mattes have resin/acrylic particles in them, the gloss coat just dries around the particles and the particles break up the sheen of the gloss coat. If that dude is mixing his own matte by using clear and a flat base and he's getting frosting it's because he's adding too much base. Or he's holding too long on one spot and building up too much.
