-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer

-=GIRLPLA GROUPBUILD=-

Build a kit featuring any brand of Girlpla, including but not limited to:
>Frame Arms Girl
>Megami Device
>30 Minute Sisters/Missions/Etc.
>Figure-Rise Standard
>Megalomaria
Additionally, any "Feminine" mechs like the Nobel Gundam or Valsione are fair game as well. What you do with your build in terms of theming is up to you so long as your base is "Feminine".

Send a description along with both WIP and Finished images of your build to gunplaplamo@gmail.com

I bought an MG Unicorn today because it was on sale and I wanted an opponent for my MG Sinanju.
Is it actually a shit kit or is that exaggerated?
>>
>>23848632
I seriously don't get how Unicorn can produce both the best MG in history and a consistently cursed line of MGs like the titular Unicorn.
>>
>>23848632
It's fine. It's biggest issue is that it's limbs are fucking heavy(especially if you have the gatlings on them). Articulation isn't amazing either but fine enough to pose. It's really only the FA version with everything on it that has issues because of how much shit is stapled on.

/gpg/ - Gunpla/Plamo General?
>>
you guys joke about it but i think ive been having more fun building a lego set once in awhile, you just have to snap it together, all of my plamo including gunpla needs to have the full 9 yards treatment which leads me to burning out, but even a mega lego set will take me a few hours while even a basic hg will take me a few months as i build at my own leisure.

Good job on the kit and I'm glad you enjoy it. But I'll never understand the appeal of transforming mecha that don't actually resemble something. Like zz/z/picrel. "hey looks it's a robot that transforms into, whatever this thing is, that basically looks like the robot anyway". It's like they're just trying to "value add", and making the robot worse. The kits always suck.

Built my first gunpla in about 15 years. Felt grandpa would be a good kit to return with. Got it on a whim while at the hobby shop for my other autisms along with some of the GQ kits im saving for when my skill is better.

My nubs aren't the best, went a bit overzealous with the zippers and knife. I bought panel liner too, just got the bottle and a brush the hobby store employee recommended. Scared to ruin it, even if its already sub par.

Did you get Tamiya panel accent? It's meant to be applied a little messy then cleaned up after. You can try some lighter fluid on a cotton swab and wipe it off. I get the upscaled Zeong and God gundam since the RGs are very different designs from the pretty old MGs, and the ups called rx-78-2 2.0 makes sense just because it was the fancy FOTM kit at the time and a safe choice to test upscaling RGs, but this seems odd to me. >Meanwhile Kondo.
My point wasn’t that his work lacks vision. It’s that some people prioritise strict accuracy and clean scaling over stylistic interpretation. Kondo has shown time and again that he’s willing to push proportions and add extra greebles purely for visual impact, rather than sticking rigidly to realism. Meanwhile you autisticfags go ballistic whenever a model has an extra cm in height to its legs.

The thing is, Kondo and Kobayashi's artstyle are actual artistic take on the robots, they are not replacing the original. It feels very annoying when you see kits that are supposed to be based on Izubuchi, Fujioka, Kazumi Fujita's artstyle, yet they have a bunch of juvenile takes like a bunch of new panel lines, blocky parts that are supposed to be round, capeshit superhero body proportion when the robot is supposed to be fat and stubby. It would stop being fun to you when someone take Kondo's designs, shit all over it with panel lines and sand the round bodyshape into sharp, blocky shape.

>>23850502
You can apply the exact same argument you're using right now to these artists. If Kondo, Kobayashi and etc are allowed to put their own distinct artistic spin on robots without it being "ruining" the originals, then why is it suddenly unacceptable when other designers do the same thing? Why do they get to add excessive panel lines, turn smooth rounded sections into hard blocky armor, and shift the proportions toward modern "superhero" aesthetics when the original design was intentionally fat, stubby, and industrial.

>>23850589
It's not just a gunpla thing, there's an entire market of action figure-esque kits with inherent color separation that don't really *need* to be painted, so most people who buy them don't bother. Gunpla is juat the most popular and also relatively cheap and accessible.
>>
>>23850589
Well for the most part, gunpla isn't designed to require paint.
>>
I wanna start painting. Since I dont really have alot of space or good ventilations, so hand painting has to do it. But I gotta ask, do you really need to wait 1 days for the paint to dry and then apply another layer and etc?
>>
>>23850589
Painting is very nice but unnecessary. They're colored out of the box unlike Warhammer and generally look fine as-is, especially if you panel line and topcoat which is cheap, fast, and doesn't add much of a learning curve. They're also not game pieces so there's no reason to customize them outside of aesthetics.
Also most gunpla painting is done with an airbrush and a proper airbrushing setup with paint will set you back several hundred burgers, not to mention the space requirements.

>>
>>23850645
No, not at all. It's going to vary with what type of paint you use, obviously, but water based acrylics typically only need a few minutes to dry. I like to wait about 15 minutes in between coats.

no that's not weird. when you spend time building and painting a model you put your essence into it. it's the same with any form of creativity like drawing, music, or whatever. it sounds kinda strange but sometimes you can kinda feel something from certain objects that someone put themselves into.

The point is to mix them into plastic model corners with the rest of the Bandai stuff and pull waifufags.

I really enjoy the process of making gunpla, but I don't really care much for the finished product. What type of gunpla takes the longest to make, without ending up with a huge model that I will feel bad about putting away?
>>
>>23851428
RGs, MGs
PGs will take the longest but you're in big model territory there
MGEX is probably the line you'd like the most, though there's very few entries and their prices are generally too high for what you get.

I've done a couple of MGs and one RG. I guess I will continue that.
The thing is I really like having some project to work on with my hands while I watch TV, but desu I don't really care much for mecha but im also a horder kinda so I am currently just accumulating gundams that I end up stuffing into the closet.
I wish there where other hobbies that scratched the same itch as assembling gunpla kits.
>>
>>23851444
you know you can just assemble them then sell them in lots on ebay to recoup some money. Plenty of people out there in the opposite position as you who don't care so much for building but would love to pick models on the cheap for parts or to paint etc.
Personally if that's your deal I think you might enjoy going the complete other direction and buying cheap kits. Maybe become an army builder. World needs more people willing to buy 36 Maganacs.

Various varnishes have different level of glossiness, there is also question of how well it was mixed before application and all that. AK "ultra matt" will kill nearly all reflections with even thin layer, Vallejo "matt" will look rather glossy, Vallejo Mecha Color matt will be somewhere between. Also, any kind of protective layer require some time to "set on", changing properties a bit while that happens.
>>
New to painting, how do people tend to handle armor with a seam line that can’t be reasonably turned into a convincing panel line, and the armor has to attach onto the inner frame? I’m looking at thigh parts I want to seam fill and paint, I’m guessing I should just paint the inner frame first and mask it off later? Hand painting if it makes a difference.

Bandai used to mog western action figures like Bionicle and hero factory, but how can they fall so soon and get their sale lost by Korean black ship named Metal cardbot and Chinese bootlegs?
Why did Bandai got their QC fucked up after Mata Nui's death? It lead Bandai to lose sale to Metal cardbot by Korea and Chinese bootlegs. If you really want to use paint markers, I'd honestly recommend splurging on the dspiae ones (or anything similarly high quality)
The generic gundam ones are fine for some applications, but whatever base they use makes certain colors struggle really hard on certain surfaces, especially dark colors and clear plastic. I genuinely get better luster out of cheap walmart acrylic markers.

Pic related is gundam marker silver, dspiae super metallic, $1 apple barrel acrylic marker, (and silver sharpie for the lulz) in that order

There was a time before scalpels were the standard in a modeler's toolbox, I remember using a single bladed stanley retractable knife for years in my youth. Even though I switched to #1 handles with different blades for most of my hobby slicing, I've still sometimes used retractable knives to remove large amounts of material if I don't want to pull out my saw.

Asked about the MG Unicorn earlier in this thread. Might go for the RG instead or get it further down the line if I can get it cheaper/feel more confident.
See this going for a little less where I am. I don't really care for Sneed at all but the design would at least have shelf presence. Is it a better pick for first MG?

Even though we shouldn't treat this shit like a popularity contest, that's how Bandai treats it. Bandai will not release a product like Gundam Assemble and include suits that will not sell well. This is not a normal release wave where they will inevitably release a shelfwarmer or two.
The fact that these mobile suits got miniatures is evidence in and of itself that they sell well.

>>
>>23852527
I'd use a brush and glaze on some acrylics tbdesu. Leaving the mouth as a solid colour looks weird, you need to define the mouth somehow, but you should do it slowly and progressively, not all at once with your typical panel liner.
>>
>>23852804
They did a preview of the game, there is a vid and /tg did an analysis. It's the most basic shit and not worth playing. I have the Zaku's from the TCG starter and they are ok so If I'm going to buy assemble stuff it's purely for the mini's.

The flight form transformation doesn't really fit the MS joint frame so it wasnt done until they switched away from those.
