-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

== STOLEN GROUPBUILD ==

Build a Mecha or vehicle built by one faction, but change its aesthetics and style to its rival faction! Examples include but are not limited to
>Canon examples of mechs being stolen and used by another group (ie: Casval's Gundam, Feddie Zakus, Ashura Mazinger, etc)
>Designs intended for one faction that were repurposed into a design for another faction (ie: Gerbera Tetra)
>What-if scenarios (ie: A Titans color Zeta Gundam)
>Stylistic interpretation (ie: What would a EFF version of the Z'gok look like?)
When it comes to your build, really make it clear that your mecha is being used by the other side!

>>24036414
Yeah, between them and the Rayfalx FAG they sure love a bit of development hell.
I know the former Hexa Gear producer is the dude behind Megalomaria, hence Sana, the Governor and them using Megalomaria to do Hexa Gear re-prints. I wouldn't be surprised if they're looking to try and really push Hexa Gear into an expanded accessory line for all their girls, they should do a Bulk Arm girl at some point.
>>
>>24036418
Oh boy, that means Hexa Gear is going to have a slow death just as Frame Arms did as Frame Arms Girls has pretty much taken its place.
>>
>>24036357
fuark, I have been waiting for this for years.
>>
>>24036420
Probably. I wish they'd do a reissue of the Frame Arms frames, they're getting pretty expensive and rare for the newer, sturdier ones.
>>
>>24036429
I wish the same, but at this point Kotobukiya might as well just abandon mechs and go full on Girlpla only which is a shame because I really love the designs and ideas they had with Frame Arms and Hexa Gear. How they're both modular and customizable in many ways before 30MM existed.
>>
>>24036433
If nothing else, Frame Arms and Hexa Gear both had good runs, and at least unlike Hexa Gear there's no need to try and hunt down nice frames for them. You'd really think they would do a re-issue of the FA when they do a FAG for it too, that seems like a easy release.
>>
Should I get the HGUC Doven Wolf or Dijeh
And don't say which one I like more, they're about the same to me
>>
>>24036442
Get a Reben Wolf.
>>
>>24036433
Hexagear's sale is too strong for them to give up. Frame Arm's death was inevitable since no one bought them in the first place.
>>
>>24036442
Doven Wolf is cooler
>>
>>24036443
I have never seen that in my life, and besides it's the Doven Wolf that's usually on sale, Dijeh should be around the same price when it restocks or if I can find it
Probably
>>24036448
Explain this immediately
>>
>>24036442
I don't own the HGUC Dijeh but I can say the Doven Wolf is cool but fiddly when you load it up with everything, those head fins absolutely hate the large missile pods that attach above the incoms. Anyway it's pretty cool.
>>
>>24036455
How fiddly, a few extra minutes and then happiness, or is shit constantly moving or falling off
He had a big ol mega cannon which looked neat, the Dijeh seemed like it could do anything you'd need a guy to, whereas the Doven Wolf felt more like a fuck-off machine that has a wider range of people to kill and eat
>>
>>24036458
"Hold the head in the designated looking forward pose OR ELSE" is how I would rate it. Again it mostly only applies if you put on the missiles that clip behind the head. Those plus the long swept back fins cause problems. Certain poses will also just be annoying like rotating the shoulder cannons down because the fins are just long and in the way, but it's not a huge deal. Nothing's particularly loose on mine, everything holds well enough even years on, but you just will be constrained in head movement by simple facts of geometry is all. I leave the missiles off personally because it still looks very imposing without them.
>>
>>24036440
I only am aware of FA via FAG, but after getting the girlpa I kind of want the originals to display them side by side
>>
>>24036464
But the missiles are meant to be deployed... man...
And the head sounds vaguely similar to what I remember hearing about the Zaku III, is it just an issue with some big Neo Zeon suits? But you GOTTA have the missiles for maximum scare value, it's almost Halloween even
Also does anyone know what that red cone on the head's supposed to do, feels like it'd just get in the way of visuals
>>
>>24036475
Some Gundams have the same problems with their V-fins and extra equipment, it's just an issue with some designs. You can find poses with it, you just can't freely move the head around with the missiles up.
>red cone
it's supposed to look cool, but I think the HGUC doesn't capture it very well. The entire HGUC's head sculpt is a little lacking. To be fair the head is, as drawn, fucking bizarre. Just how the design is.
>>
>>24036478
>Some Gundams have the same problems with their V-fins and extra equipment
tfw had to sand the HGUC Mk-II's collar for head movement, but the Zeta's is still too obtrusive and too big to sand
I just want my friends to look good and move well
>>
>>24036412
>Kinda makes MG GX Divider being PB weirder now

It was hard to not put Turn A into the discussion back then because Turn A actually had a completed run and it aired after Gundam X. So seeing X getting more gunpla, including FRS Tiffa and Turn A got nothing after Turn X MG is really funny. This doesn't really help you but you can just not use it. Personally the clear cover parts for the various Zeon monoeyes MGs use never look good to me. The absolute best result under good lighting is that you barely see it's there; the more common result is any lighting will reflect off it and ruin the appearance of the monoeye behind it by drawing attention to it just actually having a visor.

But yeah you can finesand/polish it back, I've seen some modellers doing it but have no experience myself. It just takes a lot of grit progression and getting extremely fine I think.

The polycaps and KPS were not tight enough. The kits are fine if you leave it bare and standing in basic pose, but if you let them hold the weapons then they fall apart, especially Astaroth.

Finished a HG Mk2 Amuro Custom. Unfortunately, it came out like the big doodoo.

White came out uneven as hell. I guess I really should invest in a decent spray booth because, so far, I have been doing my painting out in my garden. And even under direct sunlight I had a hell of time gaging how the white over the pink primer was looking like. It led to some parts being too thick while others too thin and still having a pinkish hue. The whole thing came out uneven as hell. Maybe the lighting of the spray booth will help me out with this, maybe I have some undiagnosed degree of color blindness.

The blue came out way too dark too. I should've added some white. The masking on the red/blue chest came out uneven too, there's some pink spots tucked in there. No excuses here, just a skill issue with the tape. Should've fixed the seam on the gun too, looks awful.

And I can't be assed to fix any of it. I really need a break from the hobby, I had to drag myself to finish this thing. It took me months. Gunpla just ain't much fun at moment.

They release plastic versions of old resin kits that are otherwise impossible to find. The details are great, although they're kinda small (15 cm give or take).
Sadly they still come with ugly seamlines that are a pain to fix or mask, Iron Giant comes to mind. The shoulder parts are 2 separate pieces but since they have a weird texture it's hard to fix.

Its meant to, but does it? It's not elaborate enough to tickle their usual love of greeble slop; and the proportions stray too far from what is expected of SD. As a giant SDfag I can say for certain this doesn't work for me. They didn't even start with sangokuden designs.

Just gonna correct you here, the 79 show started to become successful *during* its original run, after the decision to cut the episodes had already been made, which was why it was rerun so quickly in the first place. It also had a rabid fanbase who wrote letters to sponsors, bought Gundam merch and spread the word about how special this robot anime was. In comparison Gundam X was just another 90s mecha anime among a sea of mecha anime and died a quiet death. Like yeah both shows had their episodes reduced but that's where the similarities to the 79 show end.

Theres a difference between working to add more detail to make a decent kit look great and working to add more detail to make a unacceptable kit look presentable. Its just wasted effort. By your standards the dogshit vintage models from the 60s are good, even boomers have abandoned them for Tamiya, Meng, Hasegawa etc. Again nobody wanted to do extensive reworks for SD slop which is why MGSD took off. Unholy hell if you're interested in garage parts. Buster Doll uses the MD 2.0 Body, and that architecture in particular probably has the biggest garage market for those that like customizing their girlpla. It doesn't even have to be horny stuff (though you won't find any shortage of those kind of stuff too). You'll also find plenty of game/anime character specific modifications that will allow you to convert your Buster Doll into that character. Or maybe you like being a full blown little girl and play dressup with your dolls? Then there's also a big market for all sorts of clothes for them.

And even in the realm of official stuff, the Koto MSG sets are compatible with the MD line, so you can equip any auxiliary equipment to create the specific kind of mecha musume look you want.

Putty work continues though most of it isn't really visible, mostly on the underside of the chest unit and for a hip unit. The structural framework for the skirt unit locks into place around a joint block now. Just a mid-build proportion test again. Might slide the crotch unit in a little more, fine tuning the position of it is proving tricky. Really happy with the three-prong silhouette they make though.

I haven't settled on it exactly but yeah, it's going to be a bit different from Penelope. I've been liking the grey of Alyzeus and think I might go with a primarily grey structure. Bromb Texter and Gaia Gear Raiden have been knocking around as inspo for colouration of areas. Grey primary, blue secondary, white accent mostly for the overall palette anyway is where my mind's at, Sentinel-esque though specific hues and allocation undecided until the final form is achieved to really start isolating sections. I know one feature I wanna keep in some form or another is the stripe novel Penelope has on the shoulder, it's good character. Might replicate it as some trim elsewhere to tie it together more but can't get too far imagining it til the details are done. Another thing on my mind is having the hexagons a different colour or shade to make them stand out, but I don't want to overload the complexity too much with the paint scheme. It's already intricate enough as it is by design so I want to take a soft hand on scheme complexity. Mostly just idle thoughts right now though, always subject to change with inspiration.

>>
>>24038485
Only used their clear, it seems about as strong as the average acrylic clear. Their sprays like lacquer advertising is just about drying speed.
>>
>>24038492
>average acrylic clear
I am just curious with how the reviews praise their paint as the next generation acrylic.
So far i only have experience with aqueous thinned with their own thinner and DSPIAE pre-thinned; so far they are fine but DSPIAE seems better with less frosting problems and i dont need to thin them.
>>
>>24038499
I get them for kits with ABS/mixed paint just because acrylic. They also come pre-thinned for airbrushing and like I said dry a bit quicker which makes it convenient for just snapped/decals/clear coat builds that I don't plan on posing much.
I don't really like the look of their matte compared to Mr color's.
I'd say the next gen is just the combo of them spraying consistently well with not needing constant tweaking of retarder/flow improver and the dry speed.

Bandai doesn't own the concept of a v-fin, Takeshi. Their precious copyright doesn't extend to original designs that are only loosely inspired by other mecha.
And if they try and seriously pursue that, they're opening themselves up to lawsuits from older mecha than Gundam which THEY took inspiration from.
>>
>>24038745
I'm pretty sure the lawyer, the translator and the Bandai fag are all three separate individuals. So you have the nerd trying to explain the intricacies of Goondam design principles to a jap lawyer who then has to speak to a chink who then needs to translate the jap's nuanced legal threats to a bunch of other chinks using an iPad to play spot the difference with panel lines.

I hate to break it to you guys but Gundam art design doesnt matter in the slightest. Bandai took off in the 2000s because they had the cheapest and best engineered snapfit models and helped reduce the stigma of being a boomer hobby in tbe eyes of normies. Mr. Chinky was able to take over because he made even more complex and dense models for cheaper prices and essentially killed off resin GKs at the same time. The number of people who are hardcore Gundam loyalists that will buy worse models for more are progressively thinning out, which is why Bandai is becoming more aggressive towards original models instead of the usual suspects like Daban.
>>
>>24036446
Im half sure that the real reason why new hexagears are taking too long is they're being dragged around for other projects, and the ones they're actually working on, like the semi realistic bulk arm and dino with too many chainsaws is a challenge

sure people that haven't seen any gundam anime exist but they're a very small amount of people buying gunpla and toy robot models

People are calling Bandai hypocrites because they're trying to go after companies like IN ERA+ which produces original designs that are AT THE ABSOLUTE WORST inspired by elements of some Gundams, but with no 'directly lifted' designs. This is something Bandai THEMSELVES have done for decades, and is simply a matter of course in mecha design. MECHA ISN'T REAL. There ARE NO real-world mecha to be inspired by. It's an inherently incestuous design paradigm.

I have abso-fucking-lutely giving them. Zeta and ZZ were BOTH series that ripped off mecha elements that were popular at the time. Before Zeta, there were only a few different transforming suits in all of Gundam. Then, suddenly, in Zeta there were fucking DOZENS of them, and it's because of Macross which happened a few years earlier. Fucking ZZ had A COMBINING element to it, of all things. Something super popular in mecha, but which sticks out like a sore thumb in the entire rest of the franchise.
Gundam and Bandai have been trend-chasing mecha design elements for literally decades, you disingenuous faggot. These are only a few examples out of tons. Now that Chang is doing it to THEM, you're going to cry about it and throw a tantrum?
>>
>>24038900
because despite their actual size as a company bandai is a diversified company that does a shitload more than just model kit making and in terms of sheer manufacturing capability they're actually pretty hamstrung in volume. bandai's catalogue is several hundred times most of their competitors. They are juggling tens to hundreds of thousands of plastic molds at this point across all their products all of which came from a single factory for quite a while. Every year increases the amount of kits some people will expect to be reprinted in the future and whine like a child that they aren't while also being expected to make new things.

Meanwhile there's very few places in the world cheaper for starting up a manufacturing plant for damn near anything than China (for a lot of reasons).

and yet they didn't copy any valkyries did they? can you point to any design ripoffs? even real elements? you can find some between other properties from the same designers make the same designs like kondo and kobayashi of course for their other properties but they didn't go make a transforming machine anyone could mistake for a variable fighter. They are in fact their own thing. They did chase a trend, but in fact, Gundam had transforming machines in the original anyway. The corefighter might not transform into a robot, but it transforms into the core of the robot which combines... which is right back where ZZ pulled its combining from anyways, along with the G-Armour as a whole. Of course combining and transforming were done before these anyways, but the vague idea of "transforming robot" is a league of difference from taking direct design elements and it's hard to even take you at all seriously if that's your big gotcha of "theft."
This isn't trend chasing, this is making Huckebeins.

The point was always that mecha design is inherently incestuous, which includes the plamo that they become. You're getting all bent out of shape that Chinese designers are creating designs, exluding something like the Aerial Dominator which everyone and their dog knows is just a Kshatriya, which are inspired by other mecha like various Gundams, when Bandai has literally done the exact same thing stretching back decades.
Bandai never NEEDED to direclty copy the Valkyrie, they just needed to be inspired by them, which led to 3/4ths of every design in Zeta being a transforming suit. They were inspired by it, and with Zeta, ZZ, and more, they were chasing design trends. They have a long, LONG history of hiring designers on to do Gundam designs once their other mecha shows become popular, BECAUSE THEY WERE TRENDY AND THEY WERE CHASING THOSE TRENDS. Macross, L-Gaim, Patlabor, Star Wars, etc. They've done it up and down the entire genre.
People are calling Bandai hypocrites for trying to shut down Chinese plamo designers for the same behavior they have no problem doing shamelessly. They have no moral leg to stand on for getting pissy that there are successful products that are only inspired by, WITHOUT being direct copies of, various Gundams. And their legal standing on trying to get it shut down is laughable at best.
>>
>>24038886
Man now I want a RG/MG of the police and construction Zaku
>>
>>24038927
they didn't design a not-VF1 though
unlike say "not-Tallgeese" and "not-Wing Zero" chinkshit clearly aping those designs in all presentation just changing up the details so the teacher doesn't notice and you can argue they're distinct enough because actually all the elements are different it just is intentionally designed to overall resemble this popular robot form coincidentally
you want to equate the idea of "transforming" to actual drawn designs. Using an idea is cool, no problems with basically anyone except (you) apparently who can't distinguish between "design trends" and "copying a design someone else made." It's not a design trend to have four shoulder mounted binders with funnels and subarms, anyone with any knowledge knows where they got that, is it outrageous theft? Draw your own lines, but it's still excessively clear they are snagging this from one very specific design that exists and is popular. For my money most of it's just a bit of an uninspired OC donut steel that changes enough to overall be distinct, and its greatest crime is being lame, but I think less favourably of not-tallgeese and some others I don't know the name of nevermind the outright exact-replicas like prior Kshatriya and GP02.
Just make your own robots. Just make cool new things. You can do it. Battletech ultimately morphed the Glaug into the Mad Cat and it became an incredibly popular robot design without it actually being mistakable for the original.
>>
>>24038946
there's a big difference between the ariel dominator and this thing >>24037744
the ariel dominator is obviously just an unlicensed model kit of the Kshatria, while the other new one takes very heavy influence from the Kshatria and Sinanju but it overall distinct and very much it's own thing.
I'm not a lawyer so I'm talking out my ass here but I reckon bandai would have a pretty clear cut case against the ariel dominator but I don't think they do with the other one.
>>
>>24038975
I'm aware
I'm mostly talking about that thing
like I said it's greatest crime is mostly being lame and I think it's legally distinct enough to get by, I think others are too, but I think there's a big difference between people intentionally trying to make something just distinct enough to be their own version vs actually just being inspired by the thing
the problem is the majority of chinkshit really is the former, if the original designs didn't exist their not-tallgeese and this not-kshatriya wouldn't either because they worked backwards from the design and altered it rather than it just incidentally being similar and that's the sort of thing only hackfrauds do
>>

yeah that's fair.
there is a handful of chinese companies that I think are starting to that trend a bit and I hope it continues. china has the bones to be some serious competition to the japanese plamo market but as long as they only make not-gundams they're not going to be taken seriously

Thanks, Anon. You've got a good pair of eyes. The water slide glare kept hitting under certain lighting. I sponged/dry brushed some weathering around them to cut it down. The monoeye however, is just gonna be fucked forever. It was a second hand kit that came with the eye sticker already peeling. I tried saving it with a dab of super glue behind it; but i might just cover it with a coat of black pen and freehand it.
