Gay relationships are free from reproductive matters.Both these things form a basis for the purest relationship in fiction ever. It's not about the money, not about establishing a future for children, not about prestige. It's 2 people loving each other against everything. I believe this is why it all works so well in fiction. I can't say much about IRL stuff, it's just in the fictional context.
