oh my god....SHUT THE FUCK UP about FRIPP already. Its like he has literally raped my mind at this point, and its not just the music but the word "Fripp" itself that pushes my mind into full-blown insanity. I can't even take a piss in the toilet without a Frippian guitar solo being played in the unconscious of my fucked head.Lets just drop him. Lets forget about him. Lets talk about him next year? okay? Lets just take an oath to never mention him again here in /prog/ till Christmas eve Ignore the idiots that spam Fripp.Lets just discuss some "other" bands...you know like Faust? or how about Gentle Giant? or Can? or idk uhm how about Magma? We never had a SERIOUS /prog/ focused talk on Magma...but Vander is too memeable..., ok ok how about "Egg"? i've asked this question many times and i'm always ignoredwhat are the best CD/Digital releases of MAGMA albums? are the Studio Zund versions good? or are they brickwalled like the new remasters and SHMs?

David Cross is coming to monkeyland (Brazil) in November - I wanted to buy a CD and have him sign it, but I can't decide which one: should I buy Larks, SABB or Red? I like all three almost equally, with Red coming out on top due to Starless but the other two have more great tracks than Red imo.
>>123679755anything by King Crimsonthe guitar is mostly mediocre and repetitive, but the rest of the band is incredible
>>123680059amazingly basedthat was peak Zappa, too bad he was dissatisfied with the band's formation and couldn't keep it for very long
>>123680201>RedRed would be an insult because he didn't even make it on the cover.
>>123680201He did like one track on Red and already wasn't an official member by then so I'd go with one of the other two
>>123680213yeah i already know King Crimson, retard, i love repetitive guitar, it sounds good, complex guitar playing sounds like shit.
>>123680201if it's a collectible, I'd say Larks, as it's the most aesthetically appealing of the three coversbesides, Cross's violin isn't very audible in SABB, as Fripp toned it down a lot in live appearences (one of the reasons for Cross leaving the band)and on Red he's more of a guest musician than a member of the groupalso>monkeylandget some self respect, nothing more pathetic than a self hating third worlder

"Relayer" is an abomination that completely undermines the brilliance of Yes's first four albums, transforming the band from pioneers of progressive rock into a chaotic mess of ill-conceived ideas and pretentious self-indulgence. The 21-minute "The Gates of Delirium" is a torturous exercise in auditory confusion, where dissonant riffs and jarring transitions leave listeners grappling for coherence amidst a cacophony of sound. Instead of the melodic beauty and intricate arrangements that once defined their music, “Relayer” descends into mind-numbing instrumental excess that feels more like a competition of egos than a cohesive artistic statement. The production is a disaster, with a jumbled mix that buries crucial elements under a barrage of over-inflated solos, while the lyrics limp along, failing to evoke any meaningful imagery or connection. Ultimately, "Relayer" is a tedious and frustrating listen that serves as a painful reminder of the band’s fall from grace, strong enough to make fans question why they ever held Yes in such high regard.

hey this Fruupp is pretty good, had the mp3s for years and years but never really gave them a shot (Also fuck you autocorrect trying to change fruupp, I am NOT talking about that guy, possibly ever again)
>>123681801Fruupp? isnt that a guitarrist?
>>123681602Court is le best because it remains one of the greatest masterpieces of progressive rock of all time, and the one that better than any other represents its "romantic" current. The epitome of their entire romantic phase is the sublime vision/hallucination of In The Court Of The Crimson King , a ballet-suite that blends medieval folk, Renaissance song, jazz-rock, psychedelic music and classical symphony in a fantastic flight of fantasy.King Crimson achieved an almost alchemical synthesis of classical music, jazz and rock (three elements well represented by the three leading instruments: mellotron, saxophone and guitar). The magniloquence was in reality a detail. The salient fact was in having succeeded in blending such different traditions. If anything, the group's technique stood out in the almost delirious chromaticism of the compositions, in which the instruments seem to compete to decorate with increasingly stronger hues. Fripp's calligraphic guitar playing paired magnificently with McDonald's electronic gusts, Lake's graceful accompaniment, Giles' martial step. The true introduction to the group's fairy-tale universe is however I Talk To The Wind , a soft ballad accompanied by oboe and vibraphone reverberations. The first great symphonic masterpiece is Epitaph , which opens with a majestic tide of mellotron to immediately reduce to a martial and melancholic whisper; in the solemn, classical pace of this spiritual, in its apocalyptic crescendo and in the meticulous arrangement of each sequence, the King Crimson trademark is recognizable. A meticulous timbral-rhythmic architecture, erected sound cell upon sound cell, supported their delicate folk melodies.
>>123670961Great choice, anon. Long live Argento/Goblin
>>123681829>Lake's graceful accompanimentI think you are trying to say Lake's perfect voice
>>123681829It's also important to add that the masterpiece within the masterpiece was actually Moonchild , a long suite that was also the least linear piece. Here the gothic atmospheres of the other songs are set in a futuristic scenario: the humble and android refrain sinks into a swamp of dissonant sounds and percussive noises.21st Century Schizoid Man seems almost out of place, because it attacks with symphonic syncopations and a distorted slogan to then launch into a furious jam (with a suggestive guitar delirium and ferocious sax slingshots).

>>123681727>court is 'le best' because it had the best musicians, best writing and best production.nope nope nope, greg lake is an awful singer, the musicians are much better on Larks' and Larks' is more experimental and original, ITCOTCK is just a Moody Blues rip off

>>123682171repetitive music is good, but it's only good if you have a soul, because repetitive music puts you into a trance like state (similar to meditation) it brings your soul into other realms.
>>123682049that's some extreme cherrypicking, greg lake was the obvious weak link but the other 3 are god tier. yeah Larks was more experimental and original but the production sounded worse and the writing was less consistent, even though the musicianship was about as good.
>>123682227this is actually true, though non-repetitive music possesses the potential to transport us to transcendent states, it must be crafted with mastery to unlock the higher realms.
>>123682104It's not meant to sound interesting, it's all about the pure sound and the rhythm. Somehow, it is the opposite of a great number of prog rock, but it's still so rewarding, so complete, so brilliant. NEU! still sounds like they're from the future, or some kind of parralel universe where the Germans have taken over the world (peacefully). It is a very bare bone sound that juast goes on and on, it is the sound of life in itself.
>>123682272wow really, are you retarded? Lake is an incredible vocalist.
>>123682314it's meant to put you into a trance and give you a DMT like experience, but instead of the demonic realms that DMT takes you to, it takes you to the Higher realms of consciousness outside of this EVIL fake material illusion.

The release of In The Court Of The Crimson King (1969), the debut album by the King Crimson, heralded the golden age of progressive-rock. The magniloquent, symphonic sound of Ian McDonald's mellotron enrolled them in the neo-classical movement of Nice, Moody Blues and Procol Harum, but the psychedelic overtones, the medieval visions, the gothic atmosphere and the romantic pathos of the title-track and Epitaph set them clearly apart. What guitarist Robert Fripp and bassist Greg Lake penned were majestic ballads, not transcriptions of classical music. Moonchild was an abstract, futuristic poem in which the melody was less important than the soundscape, and the violent, syncopated, distorted jam of 21st Century Schizoid Man invented a new way to put neurosis into music

Robert Fripp would always contend that King Crimson, in all of its incarnations, was a live band first and a recording-studio band only secondarily. He has never expressed unqualified endorsement of any King Crimson record, insisting, like Bob Dylan, that the whole point for him has been making contact with a real audience in real time. Early on, in 1971, Fripp stressed the importance of crowd feedback, of "a feeling of involvement with the audience." Paradoxically, audience members at Crimson concerts have often felt Fripp to be distant, removed, unresponsive - locked in a world of his own, making few efforts to engage them directly. This perception was reinforced by his practice, adopted after only the first eight gigs in 1969, of sitting on a stool onstage while performing. When interviewers would ask him, "Why do you sit down on stage?," Fripp would respond, "Because you can't play guitar standing up. At least I can't." He felt it wasn't his "job to stand up and look moody. My job was to play, and I couldn't play standing up." It was a matter of concentration: "There are some things that are far easier to play standing up, and if it's a very physical thing that's required, you don't want to be anchored too much, whereas if it's something which requires a fair amount of concentration and technique you can sit down and just concentrate on it." But it was also a matter of Fripp's rejecting what he called the "show biz thing," the specter of empty gestures in the name of entertainment that forever haunts rock performances. He said wryly, "I can see the beauty of Emerson, ligging about the organ, but I could never do it and make it work satisfactorily. It'd look false, because that's not the kind of bloke I am."
>"Robert broke up the group, again, for the umpteenth time, dwelling at length, I suppose, on our lack of imagination, ability, direction and a thousand other things we were doubtless missing. I suppose this only because I remember not listening to this litany of failures. Might as well quit while you're ahead, I thought.">—Bill Bruford on the band's 1984 disbanding

Why is this the only Magma album I've never seen anyone discuss in the decade or so I've been on /mu/?Personally I think it's their best post-reunion album, extremely optimistic and uplifting even if it almost sounds like a cheesy musical score at times.

>>123693989The fact that so many books still name the Beatles as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all time are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all time. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics, instead, are still blinded by commercial success. The Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers.

caring about something being reddit is reddit.
Reddit is literally a superior website to 4chan and has a superior community. Reddit is and always will be better than this place. The people who use 4chan are usually racist, transphobic, homophobic, or some other kind of bigot. You can tell 99% of the people who use this shithole website are complete fucking losers in real life and aren't worth the air they breathe. At least on reddit you can talk with real people who aren't complete freaks like the people here. Reddit might be an "echo chamber" but I don't really care because the actual humans who use that site are better human beings than anyone here. People who use "reddit" as an insult are mad because their irrelevant incel containment forum is and always will be a miserable container of shit compared to the more popular and more interesting website which is reddit. Y'all are just miserable human beings and reddit is a much happier place with happier more successful people on it, and that makes you mad.
