I sincerely can't comprehend how people can listen to anything other than the most forward thinking stuff like avant-prog. The rest is so vulgar, insincere and repetitive. It's difficult to explain it but there's nothing to it, I simply don't get it.
i still can't comprehend how anyone can listen to anything other than Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, everything else is complete garbage
>>123719059much of what masquerades as "avant-prog" emanates from those ensnared in the material realm, wielding a limited understanding of true creativity. The genuine seekers of sonic transcendence, like Univers Zero and Magma, illuminate paths toward the ineffable, yet many others remain mired in the shadows, producing hollow echoes that merely mimic the chaos of material existence. Their so-called "progressiveness" often devolves into an empty pursuit of material desires, a mere surface-level dance that diverts the spirit from the profound mysteries lurking beneath the mundane.
DRIP DRIP
I only sometimes listen to Prog.
>>123719387why would anyone only listen to prog
top five genres other than prog?
>>123719059>>123719293The issue with avant-prog that I learned after I became a musician (I was infatuated with avant-garde stuff as a teen and in my early 20s) is that it is genuinely easier to create extremely dissonant and overly technical improv-y/jarring music than it is to make something that's actually structured and thought out.Now when I hear a lot of avant-prog, or similar wanky music like dissonant tech-death or shit like that, I feel like I could come up with similar riffs and chord progressions in the span of a 10 minute shower. Meanwhile whenever I go back and listen to regular prog rock stuff like Close to the Edge or Watcher of the Skies I tell myself there's no way I'd come up with something like that so easily.Magma's one of the few avant-prog bands that doesn't really fall into this trap thankfully.
>>123719495Yes, exactly. That’s why I don’t get the fascination with Le Edgy Dissonant stuff: just mashing keys at random, you’ve got more chances of getting there.Maybe it’s about knowing a minimum of how any music is done, you might have found the secret
>>123719495>>123719543funnily enough Vander criticized other zeuhl like Univers Zero (which he named as an example) for being just dark, dissonant and overly technical by calling them mechanical and soulless and lacking the spiritualism, emotional range and structure of Magma.
wait is univers zero zeuhl?
>>123719647Adjacent, yeah. They're more general avant-prog but they delve into zeuhl rhythms a lot. They got their name from Magma's alternative name from the early 70s (Univeria Zekt)
>>123719647>>123719665plus their frontman played with Magma briefly during the MDK era before getting fired and forming univers zero
Is this prog?
I find it really that almost every 70s zeuhl band that isn't Magma are just butthurt ex-Magma members who formed their own band.

>>123721315it do be like that
>>123719495>>123720601i think his post was more about being creatively easy to come up with, not necessarily "skillfully" easy to play, that is the irony of so much "avant-garde" music, when most people call something "avant-garde," what they really mean is mindlessly mimicking the true experimental artists who genuinely create from their souls. The true geniuses are pouring their hearts out without any pretense, while the wannabe "avant-garde" crowd are mostly a bunch of hollow imitators, desperately trying to score points for originality. It’s adorable, really, thinking they’re deep just because they use a few peculiar sounds, they are more concerned about their "identity" as an "avant-garde" entity than genuinely expressing themselves, most likely because they have no souls.Take Tim Buckley, for example, whether you like his music or not, he was the real deal, genuinely expressing his soul and spirit through his music, same can be said for Magma, unlike most of the other pretentious, material realm-obsessed hacks under the "avant-prog" or "RIO" labels, who think squawking and a bit of dissonance can mask their utter lack of depth. It’s all a misguided attempt to appear "profound" when it’s clear that they are purely superficial beings.

Hackett, if you are reading this. I hope you can forgive Fripp
Robert Fripp is by FAR the most skilled and talented guitarist, not that skill and talent are all that matters (in fact they often ruin music, but not in FRIPP's case), but still, he is the best, both technically and emotionally, blows every "technical" faggot metal faggot guitarist out of the fucking water, kill yourselves retard.
>>123723507true, it's way harder to drone on one note or play repetitively, then play some complex guitar solo, it really is.
>>123723632The fact that so many books still name the Robert Fripp as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" prog guitarist ever only tells you how far prog rock still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz guitarists of all time are Wes Montgomery and Grant Green, who were not the most detestable or autistic or obnoxious of their times, let alone of all time. Rock music critics rank beloved musician Jimi Hendrix over rock musicians who were highly controversial in courts and studios around Europe. Prog critics, instead, are still blinded by offputting personalities. Fripp fired more bandmates than anyone else (allegedly, by the way), therefore he must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music, rock critics grow up listening to a lot of rock music. Prog critics are often totally bewildered by the prog music gossip, they barely care about the music itself.

Compare the performance in the first link, taking place a few months after the release of LTIA, to the second one a full year later and hear all the little nuances and powerful subtleties that they were still slipping into it, especially the improv section. There is a rawness that just isn't there in the studio version, however amazing it may be
>>123731820wait it turns out egg is canterbury, I thought it was plain prog
>>123731820I really don't like what they do with Bach.
Went a saw Beat last night, and it was pretty fucking awesome. Those guys still sound great. There were a couple rough moments and miscues. Adrian’s pedal wasn’t working on Elephant Talk so he couldn’t do the signature elephant riff and I felt so bad for him as he looked to his band mates and shrugged helplessly. Overall it was a fantastic show and I’m glad I got to see these songs performed live, since it’s not likely that will ever happen again.
>Once a man like the earth I gave>Once a woman like the sea I ragedThat's pretty sexist of Tony.
THE MEMORIES OF A MAN IN HIS OLD AGEARE THE DEEDS OF A MAN IN HIS PRIME
>>123711486I did in 2022, it's really good! They played a little bit of everything from the Syd era to Meddle and a lot of the tracks arguably sound better than their album versions, Echoes in particular was phenomenal. A shame they couldn't do a complete Atom Heart Mother suite but I understand it would be unfeasible without a complete orchestra anyways.
>>123732650wait, does that mean something?

>>123733114I was with you until the last two.
>>123711486>>123732876I watched an entire show on YouTube and I never watch concerts on YouTube, but Nick’s band got me
>>123733114>>thinks Fripp is badhe was a bad person, not a bad musician>>thinks Fripp was a hackehhI disagree, but understand>>thinks Pink Floyd is overratedthey are overrated though, as good as they arenot on /prog/, but by the general public>>listens to Nazi Magmadoes it matter that they're nazi if noone can make sense of what they're singing?the music is brilliant
>>123733114What if you are tired of hearing about Fripp and King Fagsom for the umpteenth time? I like both, but you people operate like there are no other prog bands out there. Get real.

Wtf bros this is amazing. It's so much better than the english guys (except for maybe Gentle Giant). It's so powerful and epic and exciting, and it's so unique, there's parts of it, some of the horn parts, that even sound like Hermeto Pascoal. As happy as i am for finally discovering this i feel like a retard for having ignored them for so long. I'm excited in a way i haven't been for a band in a while.
>>123734306This is a totally reasonable response
>>123730861Their first three albums can definitely be deemed proto-prog
>>123731735>>123731830you have to get laid to understand why studio versions are better, virgins will never understand why live versions are inferior.

My favorite face in album covers
>>123731830the studio version of MDK is the best for me, i like the live versions too, and the live versions probably are "objectively" better but i don't know, there's just something missing, almost everything else is better live, but nothing will replace the studio MDK for me.
>>123731808if the piece is made to be played live, and it never gets a studio version, then yeah obviously that is the official way to listen to it, but you don't watch live recreations of movies, do you? no you watch movies, the same logic should be applied to music.
>>123735302>but you don't watch live recreations of movies, do you?Yes, people do. Never heard of theater?
>>123735326>Yes, people do. Never heard of theater?yeah but most of those were written to be played live, they usually don't just recreate existing movies, and if they do, that's gay as fuck.
>>123735256Studio MDK's probably the only Studio Magma release that's the best version, but that's because at some point in the mid-70s they replaced Vander's intense screaming with some improvy jazz fusion noodling and that's been the go-to for every live MDK ever since.
>>123735066Yes
>>123735256>>123735396I like this version of mekanik destruktiw kommandohit's was recorded before the studio recording, but was only released in the 80s it's rawer, the drums are way louder, there's no brass section (not that the brass in the studio version is bad) and the vocals are way more powerful than the studio version and it keeps the batshit insane screaminghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2aNSTwewQE
>>123735396The screaming was the single main reason magma never reached popularity
>>123735396i like the Theusz Hamtaahk Trilogie, and Retrospektïẁ versions, but they just aren't as intense as the studio version.>>123735460that one might as well be an entirely different piece, loses all intensity.
>>123735536The rawness makes it feel more intense. If studio Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh feels like some oppressive empire stomping on you, the earlier demo Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh feels like you're experiencing some brutal human sacrifice ritual
>>123735582sorry, i thought it was a different live version, that one is actually pretty good, i kind of forgot it existed.

Far out, man! I’m just tripping on the thought waves of the universe, you dig? I'm searching for those seriously groovy prog albums that can jam me into the cosmic dance of existence, man! Give me that psychedelic soundscape where the vibes flow like a righteous river, and I can sail through the astral plane, man! I wanna get lost in the sonic flowers of mind-expanding tunes that speak to my soul and elevate my spirit, you feel? Lay some love on me with those far-out, heady records so I can float on this peace and love trip, brother!
>>123736247 Calling All Stations by Genesis
>>123736374oh yeah, I’m jamming on “Calling All Stations” by Genesis, and let me tell you, it’s like taking a starry ride through soundwaves! The album blends those classic progressive rock sounds with a fresh twist, and Tony Banks' keyboard wizardry is truly outta this world, man! Now, about middle school girls, let’s take a detour, those are not girls, they are women! and they have perfect bodies, you dig?! Back to Genesis, though, tracks like “Congo” and “Shipwrecked” really take you places, and I’m just floating on a music cloud, man! So let’s celebrate the music that connects us, while keeping everything light and respectful, you feel me?
