In the 2000’s, I was one of those metalheads who thought metalcore was gay shit and didn’t listen to it.But I recently listened to Deadguy’s Fixation on a Coworker, and I actually really liked it. Please redpill me on metalcore. Who should I listen to next? What bands I should check out or avoid?
Just listen to what you like. I rebelled against metalcore at the time because it was trendy and the scene kids into it weren't serious metalheads which pissed me off cause I hated posers, but I was lowkey listening to some of it. I can't really help you though cause the only shit I really like is the more metal, less core, melodic crap that was ironically the popular shit all the posers liked like KSE
>>123717708https://rateyourmusic.com/list/interz0ne23/dissonant-metalcore/
>>123717708Just listen to Mathcore
>>123717708That niche 90s metalcore/matchore branch is cool but the rest is gay shit that you shouldn't listen to
Check out Kickback, Integrity, Earth Crisis, Ringworm, Snapcase, Strife, and the first few Hatebreed albums.Metalcore was cooler in the 90s when it was closer to hardcore. Modern metalcore is kind of shitty IMO but I'm open to any more modern recommendations.
>>123718589>I'm open to any more modern recommendations.Contention, Judiciary, Harms Way, Kublai Khan TX, Sunami
>>123718673>Harms WayI always forget these guys are considered metalcore now. I don't really remember any of their stuff after Isolation so I'll give it a re-listen.These guys are a pretty cool modern band I forgot about, they might be a little more hardcore though.https://envisionhc.bandcamp.com/album/the-gods-that-built-tomorrow
>>123717708Dillinger Escape PlanConverge
Can someone explain to me how this rift between metalcore and the rest of metal happened in the 2000’s? I’m a zoomer.I was even told that it’s only called metalcore by outsiders, and everyone in the scene just call it hardcore.
>>123718926By the mid 2000s metalcore was either just bands trying to copy hatebreed or they went in the melodic direction which just wasn't as good. There were a few standout bands that have already been mentioned ITT like converge and dillenger escape plan. You could throw botch on the list too.It seems like there has been a resurgence of metallic hardcore in the past 5-10 years though and a lot of it has been good. Listen to Kruelty.
>>123718589This guy gets it, if you like the mathy side of Deadguy listen to some of the other bands rec'd like Dillinger Escape Plan but I don't really care for that crap. If you mostly like the rawness and intensity go with these
>>123718926All fusion genres have a rift with the rest of metal, because it often appeals to people who don't like the rest of metal but they enter metal circles and talk shit anywayI can tell you I don't really hate nu metal, metalcore, industrial metal, whatever etc, I just hate the fans because they don't respect metal as a whole or alternatively stay in their own lane
Metalcore before it had been co-opted into the larger pool of metal was a hardcore offshoot and has roots in the 90s. Once it became more polished and evolved did it become the metalcore we know of in the 00s, bands like lamb of god, trivium, as I lay dying, and while some of them may have had genuine metalcore roots or influences, they weren't metalcore in its truest sense. Metalcore is a diverse and expansive, innovative, experimental genre, not just in name but it isn't just black jeans, breakdowns as a cop out for decent songwriting, and whiny lyrics. Post hardcore had the same issue, the more mainstream sound had the skinny jeans, whiny lyrics, breakdowns, that is why bands like sleeping with sirens, black veil brides, pierce the veil are all confused with metalcore and metalcore and post hardcore are used interchangeably, because of the similar sounds. Musically they're cousins. Metalcore bands include deadguy, integrity, botch, converge, merauder, nora, everytime I die, norma jean, all out war, earth crisis, hatebreed, just to name a few.Metalcore is not metal, it is hardcore.

>>123719290But is Dillinger metalcore?
>>123722142Mathcore. Very technical, progressive, experimental metalcore. Yes.
>>123717708same. I realized metalcore used to be an actual thing and not the faggot djent variant or slaughter of the soul-core that came after that masquerades as it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqYgQphaJgcclear highlight of the genre for me
I always found it fascinating that the internet community’s “accepted” form of metalcore has always been metallic hardcore which is just slightly heavier hardcore, or nerdy skronky mathcore stuff which also isn’t close to metal ultimately. But when Aftershock then their later form Killswitch Engage brought the genre closer to metal with a sound that’s At The Gates+In Flames+Pantera+Slayer, it’s when everybody in the online community had a shitfit.
>>123725029Unbelievably based and truthpilled.
>>123717708Check Coalesce, Burnt by the Sun.Also try Breach and Burst although these guys steered slightly away from metalcore, you might find them interesting
>>123717708Check out:All Out WarArkangel BloodletTurmoilIrateCold As LifeVisions of Disorder Crumbsuckers StigmataLength of TimeRise and FallDeformityPale Creation Prayer for Cleansing Damnation ADUndyingDisembodied Morning Again
>>123727515Because while some of those early melodic bands were pretty good they marked a clear turning point when the sound became codified and marketable. There's a slick inauthenticity that followed shortly after.
>>123718589this
>>123727515Dude, listen to killswitch engage and then listen to something like poison the well, coalesce, converge, dead guy, earth crisis, and you see immediately the stark contrast between something of genuine and authentic hardcore roots, to something more polished, more commercialized, and while there is nothing wrong with melody, the songwriting structure is less hardcore and more appealing to the masses. It takes and draws heavily from metalcore bands, but does a little bit of poppifying both aspects of both genres it takes from, so it makes metal a bit pop, and whatever is left of hardcore, which has been strained and filtered through more polished songwriting, is made more pop. I like some of the killswitch engage songs, but that is when metalcore became less about hardcore bands playing metal like riffs, and more about playing metal-lite with the overuse of breakdowns, and why did they overuse breakdowns? Because they were substituting breakdowns for decent songwriting. Listen to something like this (wrath of sanity - earth crisis) https://youtu.be/E-2jLd7KxiI?si=VKYMGYAUdH2aaRFjTo this (Unholy confessions - avenged sevenfold) https://youtu.be/3FZlG8Jztxk?si=DGQZ50xC_37oIjfTOr this (My curse - killswitch engage) https://youtu.be/iPW9AbRMwFU?si=qLuqhOTPvkqjxWsFThe only thing "metalcore" about the latter two tracks is the production and maybe the style they play in, but it has lost its point at that point. And many bands overused the same riff too, meaning that it was oversaturated and less about experimenting, playing hardcore with your own metal twist and showing your metal influences, but more about being a metal boy band. Avenged sevenfold or trivium is not hatebreed https://youtu.be/4IwUWuBJ2dk?si=Lpong7n0L7c6QVpc(Smash your enemies - hatebreed)
If you like black / death metal listen to Prayer For Cleansing and Arkangel. Lots of good recs in here pointing you to the based 90s stuff.
>>123717708In the 2000’s, I was one of those metalheads who thought metalcore was gay shit>>123717736>weren't serious metalheadsit was never supposed to be for metalheads, it's hardcore punk you fucking peasants
>>123734565>In the 2000’s, I was one of those metalheads who thought metalcore was gay shitSame lol. Now I listen to hatebreed while working out.
>>123717708Deadguy hits so hard. Real heavy stuff.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2QsquE6W_UThis thread is probably the most fitting thread on mu to post this awesome GISM cover by Poison Idea
>>123717708There’s a shitload of bands you missed Rorschach, Botch, Coalesce, Converge, Snapcase, Earth Crisis.Lesser knowns like Sworn Enemy and Death Before DishonorAnd little known ones like Morning Again. You’re definitely missing out.>>123717736Yeah Killswitch was lame, spelled the death knell for 90s metallic hardcore
>>123717708For the record, I started with 80s hardcore and ended up a grind/crust/pv fan before graduating to authentic metal
What metalcore would you recommend to someone who doesn't like metalcore but still wants to listen to metalcore? I'm not trolling, let me explain through some examples. Some of them don't really fit the definition, but that's the point.Imminence - Continuumhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SE88noufabgKillswitch Engage - Holy Diverhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKB2nvioCqgSpiritbox - Circle with Mehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0WzT0OJ-E0Spiritbox - Jadedhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjnZVpVvJ-k36 Crazyfists - I'll Go Until My Heart Stopshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqy4AqVskew
>>123735909Most of those are alternative metal, so I'd suggest Nu Metalcore like Graphic Nature, 156/Silence, Thrown, Memorrhage, Tallah, Omerta, Diamond Construct, Alpha Wolf, Dealer, etc.Give these a shot, let me know what you thinkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2_IKriIKk0https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Il7wqxtIOK0https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqBzOVCmIdMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ku5Ie5xPd6Ehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4Dwh8pjWDA
>>123717708im disregarding your entire post, and these are the 4 heaviest, hardest bands ever. No Reason To Live Unit 731 Line Of Scrimmage Remembering Never
>>123736279Thanks. I get why you picked some of these, but they're still not gimmicky enough. It might sound like I'm shitposting, but I actually want stuff that makes metalcore fans go "that doesn't count". Spiritbox in particular is the perfect example of that, at least the songs I posted.
>>123736631I should add that 156/Silence does come close to what I mean.
>>123735909Most of the bands worth listening to have already been mentioned ITT. Start with anything you have seen mentioned more than once.
>>123736777They're too hardcore for me. No pun intended.
>>123736683Yeah, it sounds like you mainly want alternative metal with a dash of metalcore then. Maybe try Loathe, Motionless in White, I Prevail, "Pressure" by Wage War, "Fatalism" by Polaris. What you're looking for is generally the more mainstream radio-friendly acts.>>123736777There's zero chance he's going to go for the metallic hardcore recommendations
>>123736934Yep, you described it perfectly. Although it's not an easy balance to strike, there are so many generic sounding bands in that space, especially because it's more mainstream. The metalcore elements don't help that much on their own.
>>123735909Try Vision of Disorder - From Bliss to Devastation
>>123737368If you'd like a comprehensive list of what you're looking for, I'd recommend you follow this>go to RateYourMusic charts>sort by either top or popular>sort by "all time">include alternative metal as genre>include metalcore as influenceKeep in mind that most metalcore threads on /mu/ aren't going to be discussing this type of music, since it can barely even be considered metalcore
Check out Integrity, Dying Fetus covered one of their songs. I was like you for a long time but they got me into metalcore. I had thought it was that gay scene shit that was popular in the 2000s.
>>123737553Thanks, I had no idea that site was so versatile.>Keep in mind that most metalcore threads on /mu/ aren't going to be discussing this type of music, since it can barely even be considered metalcoreYeah, I know. I won't insist on it, I just wanted to satisfy my curiosity. Thanks for the effortposts.
Wasn’t the whole rift between metalheads and metalcore kids due to the latter trying to do hardcore dancing in circle mosh pits?
>>123738420I think that was part of it. But you can still see like 15 year old YouTube videos of hardcore kids trying to dance in a pit and getting their asses kicked.
