What’s the progbro consensus on Dream Theater? Listening to them right now.
Not a beginner prog fan either, love VDGG, Rush, King Crimson, Yes, Gentle Giant, Magma, Henry Cow, etc.

Thoughts on the Red Elemental Mix? I think every song is inferior to the original, but I still enjoyed listening to the album in a new way. Title track and Fallen Angel were the highlights for me. Did not like the new version of Providence. One More Red Nightmare and Starless were both ok.

>>124197558
It's the best way to listen to the album but not having Hey You prevents it from being kino

I own a flute which I kinda half-ass train with it. yeah i think it's a western-style one hence I can play every notes in it.
Sometimes I try to play that Firth of Fifth's flute line which should be doable enough for training but the biggest challenge will always be the breathing control.
>>
>>124211090
it's literally impossible to play any wind instrument, i REFUSE to believe any of these musicians can actually play this piece of shit, i can't even get a sound out of a flute, it's fucking impossible, it's literally NOT POSSIBLE to breathe hard or long enough to get a sound out of these pieces of fucking shit, fuck you for lying.
>>
>>124195746
they used to be more listenable when Kevin Moore was still around, and then he left and with each passing album they got more soulless than ever.
Rudess is clearly talented as keyboardist but I find most of his contribution is either him wanking by himself or double-wanking with Petrucci.
He did have some standout moment in The Astonishing where it utilized more of his simpler playing but no one likes that album.

tbf it took me a year before getting that precise angle of where to blow (and it sometimes slips as well)
fingering is surprisingly easy to memorize, of course it's harder when you want to play some melody and you're still in the process of linking each note to each fingering.

Steve's beef with Genesis has always been rather petty and selfish. He was too stubborn to compromise with Tony and Mike on anything and then complained that *they* were stubborn and uncompromising. Ironically only a couple years after he left the three worked out a sustainable peace where they could split the difference between band stuff and solo stuff in a way that pleased everyone.

"If Steve had stayed just one more album he'd still be in the band." - Phil Collins.

"Steve didn't have to leave. It could have been the 4 of us." - Mike Rutherford.

"If I'd gotten into the car with Phil I'd probably have stayed in the band." - Steve Hackett.

It was a very near thing. Pity it didn't happen that way.

Only true for flutes. Woodwinds I taught myself how to make the mouthshape in an hour of watching Youtube tutorials, flutes require some sort of witchcraft to get those things playing
>>
>>124213290
Well it did seem like he was being slightly held back by the band the whole time he was there.
>>124220967
Only Peter/Phil seemed to really support Steve
>>
>>124221828
A lot of that is probably blown out of proportion, not in the least by Steve himself. He was really jazzed about writing and doing solo work and had less patience as a team player. He went from writing almost nothing on his own to suddenly dumping songs on the band and it was probably just a temporary friction that could've been worked out if Steve had stuck with it a little longer. Their agreement to take time to do solo projects and write everything collectively pretty much saved Genesis from imploding entirely.

I saw them live a few weeks ago and they were ok. Mood was great but the actual music mightve not been the best (James Labrie)
>>
>>124195746
Like them a lot, funny enough I saw them in Bratislava yesterday.
James LaBrie *was* a phenomenal singer, but today he just doesn't have the capacity to hit the high notes from the 90s albums. He sounded decent on tracks like Panic Attack or Strange Deja Vu, but completely butchered classics like Metropolis Part 1 or Pull Me Under. Everyone else was great though, it was a great experience. Wish they played Fatal Tragedy, definitely my favorite song by them.

Found some French-Syrian progressive pop from 1979 that sounds very Zeuhl-ish. Female operatic vocals and weird repetitive basslines. Pretty much zeuhl pop.

>A Genesis fan who was in contact with someone over bootleg trading learnt that they had ~2 minutes of never-before-seen live in studio footage, they were originally suspicious until the contact provided (painfully low res) screenshots of said video. Until that day not even those working for the band knew of this footage's existence, or the band ever doing an in-studio live film. Apparently this was a clip from a German TV show recorded in August 1969, likely in Wessex Studios which is where "In the Court of the Crimson King" was recorded. They were willing to hand over the footage for 50-60 euros, but despite members of the community willing to donate the money to the Genesis fan they decided not to buy it immediately, they instead forwarded this information over to King Crimson's record label DGM

>Now onto the contents of the video itself, we previously were told it was from "08-12-69" to which we presumed that meant August 12th which didn't line up with any known live performance. They originally said it was a studio recording and we assumed it was recorded in Wessex studios where they did their first album.

>But now that the footage has been bought it turns out it was actually just a live show overdubbed with the studio recording, and based on the outfits and layout of the video it would seem it is from their stay at the Chesterfield Jazz Club on September 7th 1969, thankfully a full audience recording of this show exists. Unfortunately this video is only about 2 minutes in length and is of "21st Century Schizoid Man" with the owner saying "there's a riff + the full first verse, and then the ending of the song" and that "the whole footage probably doesn't exist anymore".

DGM apparently have it in their possession as of a few months ago and but as for plans for releasing it to the public, no other updates have been given

This is as close as this chronically interesting group has ever come to a good album, or maybe it's as close as Robert Fripp has ever come to dominating this chronically interesting group. As usual, things improve markedly when nobody's singing. The lyrics are relatively sharp, but there must be better ways of proving you're not a wimp than casting invective at a "health-food faggot." Unless you are a wimp, that is. B
