Lead Belly (b. 1888 Huddie William Ledbetter) is one of the most influential figures in the blues and rock and roll. Lead Belly spent much of his first 30 years as a musician in and out of Louisiana and Texas prisons. Later introduced as having sung his way out of prison, Lead Belly received a pardon in Texas after singing for clemency, and again in Louisiana after an appeal from John and Alan Lomax (Library of Congress American Folklife Center) in 1933. He recorded and toured with the Lomax duo, but their association ended with a 1935 lawsuit to break a management agreement and pay his full earnings, previously paid in installments so he would not 'spend it all on drinking' (wiki)
