Which classic rock bands are losing favor among zoomers, and which ones are maintaining or even growing in popularity?
Queen and Fleetwood Mac have obviously soared in popularity among normies. The Doors seem to be gaining more and more of cult following in music circles, but this hasn't (yet?) penetrated the normie sphere.
On the flip side, I've noticed that the Who has very poor streaming numbers on Spotify. I'm not sure why they've been so forgotten compared to their contemporaries. They have nearly half as many monthly listeners as even ELO, which was a far smaller band during the 70's.
>>
>>124577263
It's because The Who fuckign sucks compared to other british bands of the 60s (Kinks, Byrds, Beatles)
>>
>>124577278
The Byrds aren't British you retard. They're *literally* known as the American Beatles. They have about 1.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify though, so they'd be another great example of an important boomer band that's been forgotten.
Also...
>not mentioning the Rolling Stones
They're the best British Invasion band.
>>
The Who is a singles band, but so is Queen and Fleetwood Mac
>>
The Who only has one or two great albums, the rest is pretty meh. They're good but one can only listen to My Generation or Baby O Riley on repeat so many times
>>
Genesis's numbers are pretty low considering how huge they use to be
>>
>>124577393
I really do not understand why zoomers like the Beach Boys but ignore the Byrds. They're both very dated, but the Byrds at least have some cool guitar riffs.
>>
>>124577467
beach boys influence is felt on todays modern indie scene the byrds influence is felt too but its praise is given to bands that the byrds influenced like rem or the smiths
>>
>>124577452
It's kind of flipping with the 80s stuff falling out of public consciousness and the 70s stuff getting rediscovered by young people online
>>
>>124577542
>rem
Another band zoomers ignore for some reason. Why don't zoomers listen to Murmur?
>>
>>124577578
theyd rather listen to cringe gay people (morrissey) then based gay people(stipe)
>>
>>124577542
>todays modern indie scene
soooo shit it makes my ears bleed. aaaaaahhhh my ears!! oww
>>124577601
exactly
>>
>>124577263
I feel like Pink Floyd are still kinda big with zoomers

King Crimson are relatively popular with them. Still more a music geek thing but they have a good amount of zoomer fans due to the Jojo anime connection

I agree with The Who. They seem more known as a name than with big youth fanbases

REM deserves credit for basically inventing the sound of college rock (and therefore US indie) but when you're the "Everybody Hurts"/"Shiny Happy People" band I don't think kids want to go back and explore your catalog.
>>
Seems like every zoomer that is genuinely interested in music likes TVU. In my day mainly the banana album was well-known, but it seems like the zooms I know who are into music beyond the surface level also really like White Light White Heat, self-titled, and Loaded.
>>
>>124577714
>Radiohead
They didn't even make their best stuff until the 21st century, though? I'm glad to see that Radiohead is getting explored by zoomers more than before. Somewhere along the line all the lazy bait threads about RH being bad started getting zoomers to actually have the view. Also, Radiohead are really the last great rock band, very important for understanding pop music development history. It's still insane to see zoomers parrot lazy "Kid A bad" bait posts, but with sincerity. Then they inevitably get into OKC and then the rest of their discography
>>
u2 hurt their popularity with the youth with that iphone stunt and mediocre 00s output. they'd probably be looked at more fondly if it werent for those
>>
>>124577817
They're the shittiest meme band of all time and they never did anything important. When will they finally be forgotten?
>>124577837
They suck.
>>
Van Halen
>>
>>124577817
>They didn't even make their best stuff until the 21st century, though?
wrong, the 21st century started in 2001, also the criteria is "had most of their success pre-2001" and their early guitar slop sold way more than the subsequent albums
>>
>>124577715
>you're the "Everybody Hurts"/"Shiny Happy People" band
REM is the "Losing My Religion" band, zoomers don't know about the other songs
>>
>>124578455
I know about those 3 and It's the End of the World as We Know it and all 4 of them suck prompting me to not want to listen to any more of them
>>
>>124577714
I'm sick of this poster.
>>
>>124577817
>It's still insane to see zoomers parrot lazy "Kid A bad" bait posts, but with sincerity.
Lol nigga. Clearly it's all bait. Zoomers are truly a strange species with no opinions of their own.
Ok Computer: 6.5/10
Kid A: 4/10
In Rainbows: 5/10
That's all I've listened to. I concluded this while I was in the RYM echo chamber where these 3 were universally praised without the levels of contrarianism on /mu/
>>
Kid A fucking sucks compared to OK Computer and The Bends.
>>
>>124578635
>RYM echo chamber where these 3 were universally praised without the levels of contrarianism
i don't get it. what's the appeal? where's the riffs? Radiohead is not all that. Radiohead is barely even rock music
>>
>>124578556
You're really not missing much. Music journos tried to fleece the world calling Murmur a masterpiece for the last 40 years. It's not gonna happen.

>>
>>124578674
The appeal is often in the slow buildup and repetition of slightly musically interesting patterns creating a deep ambience to the album. Besides Electioneering and Bodysnatchers I wouldn't call them rock. I really can't stand the singer's voice, it's one of the worst I've ever heard (REM's is bad too but less so). But some songs have enough of a melody and vibe to latch onto that I can stand it, and I like
Climbing up the Walls
Exit Music
Karma Police
Let Down
No Surprises
Treefingers (though the Minecraft song based on it improves it)
All I Need
Reckoner
Weird Fishes
Burn the Witch

If you got laid more you wouldn't care as much especially given the age that most of you guys are at. Any Sane 20 something would see a 40 Year Old Man desperately posting about how "Zoomers no longer like The Who you're le weird pothead" and instantly think "Wow what a fucking loser" even if they don't approve of or like classical rock music in general. It's just sad. Nobody cares about your shitty 2000s Incel Chungu Reddit Post Rock Bands anymore. You need to let it go.
>>
>>124579877
Why are you so obsessed with people getting laid? It's so fucking weird
>>
>>124577263
I can definitely see the Doors becoming a new zoomer phenomenon, they have the gothic tinge to them, Jim Morrison has sex appeal, and they have a lot of classics. The thing with artists like the Who and Jimi Hendrix not lasting is because they don't have that many "hookish" songs, they have that 1 or 3 hits they released that people will be playing eternally, but nothing really else. Don't think there's like even up to 10 Who songs the public could name, the number is probably more like 5. Same thing as bands like the Kinks or Beach Boys, if you have a bunch of catchy hits you will last longer pretty much. 1 or 3 doesn't cut it so pop bands like Queen, ABBA, Fleetwood Mac make the transition into later generations easier than let's say rock groups like the Who

some of Meat Loaf's albums are missing like his last two decent albums from the 2000s. and his 2010s albums were no good unfortunately and those were final albums so not a great way to go out.
people just listen to the first two Bat Out Of Hell albums and ignore the rest
also his biggest song I'd Do Anything For Love has lower streaming numbers because there are a few different versions on Spotify, the 5 minute single edit has 232,000,000 streams and the 11:58 minute album version has 47,000,000 streams

THEY KNOW (roughly from most popular):
The Beatles
Fleetwood Mac
Steely Dan
Queen
ABBA
Tears for Fears
Lynyrd Skynyrd (Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama are well-memed)
Pink Floyd
Bowie
Bee Gees
Beach Boys
AC/DC
The Eagles (mainly just Hotel California)
ELO
Nirvana (most just know who Cobain is)

SOME KNOW:
Chicago
Led Zeppelin
Rush
Van Halen
Billy Joel
Boston
Guns 'n' Roses
U2
The Police
Heart
CCR

THEY'VE NEVER HEARD OF:
The Rolling Stones
Doors
Genesis
Radiohead
Tool
ZZ Top
The Who
The Clash
The Doors
Journey
The Band
The Jam
The Grateful Dead
Pearl Jam
The Stooges
Soundgarden
REM

Too much filler and way too many lame later era albums. They never had a comeback like Sabbath, or ended before they could really tarnish their legacy like Zeppelin. Blackmore was smart to move onto Rainbow and make more peak material with a fresh lineup, though it wouldn't be long before he ran out of steam too.

>>
>>124593929
Oh yeah, Perfect Strangers. That happened. Anyways, they needed a Sharon as Sabbath obviously did to pull strings once Ozzy entered back into the fold since the band was flopping around and gasping for air once Dio initially left.

This thread is ignoring the fact that Led Zep reigns supreme over all of these boomer bands. A zoomer can throw on LZ1 for the first time and still be as blown away as a kid from the 70s if they have some loose understanding of analog music. AND they have more great songs than any band mentioned in this thread besides maybe Radiohead
>>124581919

I shall now give my very clearly valued zoomer consensus on all these bands.

>The Beatles
Seem to mog all other 60s pop bands, probably my favorite from that decade

>Fleetwood Mac
Barely aware of them although I've probably heard their songs a million times on the radio without knowing it was them

>Steely Dan
I like them a lot but they're a little too soft rocky for me

>Queen
Were my favorite band when I was 10

>ABBA
They're cheesy but I like Waterloo

Extremely good and contributed to my obsession with New Wave

>>
>>124597323
I think the juxtaposition between how upbeat their songs are vs their creepy and sad lyrics is inherently attractive. Plus they didn't really sound like any of the other bands that the classic rock stations would play.

what about Yes?

They are songs that can be enjoyed by children, but the themes can really only be understood by people past the age of puberty, even if the lyrics (specifically for Hey Jude and Here Comes the Sun) are relatively simple.
>>
>>124598267
they SOUND like songs for children though

Pulp. Suede, Manics, Oasis and Blur still all have some amount of presence but Pulp and Jarvis Cocker barely get a mention these days despite Jarvis always being the most well-liked person out of the lot.
>>
>>124582165
Led Zepplin being super mid is probably partially why.

I've listened to
>Something, Here Comes the Sun, Let It Be, Hey Jude
And they're all just perfectly fine songs. If I heard them alot as a kid I'd probably have nostalgic enjoyment in the same sense as No Surprises by Radiohead or something by They Might Be Giants Kids. Let it Be is probably my favorite, and something like I Play the Road by Zac Brown Band has a similar feel but executed better https://youtu.be/4w_x_iknqqI?si=nxcEO7eHlMy9CDG4
And frankly I really like the Jacob Collier cover of Here Comes the Sun. It does actually improve the original without overloading it with chords and stuff and if the original sounded like that maybe I would've been a bit more willing to pursue the Boomer claims of "GOAT." It might be my favorite Collier song too
https://youtu.be/dXf1nUVdVuM?si=q3H-TPhfTPoIJlIF
I swear I can't remember how Hey Jude sounds no matter how much I listen to it

Beatles are like Taylor Swift but the boy band edition; lots of cute lore, melodrama and goings on in a short time frame. Unlike Swift there's also the added bonus of dozens of catchy pop songs, tie in films, a meteoric rise from humble/impoverished beginnings, a legendary split, a literal assassination, scorned wives, etc. The beatles story has everything you could ever want in a band.

Zeppelin were heavily masculine and more about the music, drinking, drugs, groupies and the 'on the road' 70s lifestyle than the psycedelic soap opera backstory that shores up the Beatles. There's less for zoomers to cling to and romanticise.
>>
>>124600569
Pulp don't have a relatable image anymore. They're not timeless.

Manics = tragic rebellious glam rock four peice become trio when tortured poet vanishes

Suede = glam androgynous gay shiz

Oasis = soaked up the football lad crowd and 30 million normies who just wanna drink and have fun

Blur = soaked up all the people who were too normie for the Manics/Pulp/Suede but considered themselves too smart for Oasis.

Jarvis was the smartest of the lot lyrically, but his social and sexual commentary and his gawky student image is a relic of the 80s. Straight guys like that don't exist in 2024, which is why Morrissey continues to own that 'loser' niche as his feminine melodrama is more relatable. Pulp were just a little too on the nose and of their time to become a legacy act in the same way.

Not a zoomer and it seriously fucking kills me that more of you guys don't listen to David Lee Roth era Van Halen. They were basically everything that Hair Metal should have been. Talented but goofy as shit and unbelievably fun to listen to and never took themselves too seriously (at least on stage).

I recommend, in no specific order:

Dance the Night Away
Hot for Teacher
Somebody Get Me a Doctor
Eruption / You Really Got Me
Panama
Jump
Everybody Wants Some!!
Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love
Beautiful Girls

Bonus Solo DLR Tracks for the Curious:

Yankee Rose

In my area and based on what I see online, male zoomers listen to rap and maybe some RnB, and female zoomers listen to bedroom pop/general pop.

That wasnt a huge hit in the US desu. XTC's biggest hits here were Mayor of Simpleton and Dear God. They were an alt radio thing mostly

Making Plans For Nigel is their catchiest song from what I've heard. if i were picking an XTC song to play on the radio it would be that.

We're talking about the ones that are at least moderately into music, not the normies. The normies obviously just listen to modern pop, rap, and/or country garbage.

stupid yet true reason: zoomers love lore and backstory. The Beach Boys have a fuckton of that, the Byrds do not (that I’m aware of)

>>124610440
I would second this, none of my friends have any interest in any rock that's hard or blusey

>>
what are we considering "classic rock"? if we mean pre-80s, then Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Beach Boys, pretty much anyone that was included in the GotG soundtracks, anyone featured in the JoJo manga, or songs that were sampled by big pop artists today get traction. if we include up to the early 2000s (garage rock revival, nu metal, 90s grunge and britpop) then there's still a thriving demand for that kind of guitar music in the underground. singer-songwriter stuff like elliot smith is still extremely popular, i actually just saw my niece at thanksgiving listening to elliot smith and NMH, which she said she heard at school from some girl in her class. "rock" or guitar-based, distorted music is definitely still around and i honestly feel that zoomers are getting into bands a lot more recently. spotify's algorithm also regularly exposes me to bands I would've never really gave a chance. anything vibes based also will do some numbers with a certain garden variety of "aesthetic poster", like duster/helvetica.

I'm convinced you only talk to a select few zoomers (if any at all) and have no clue what you're talking about. Most zoomer normies have never even heard of Fleetwood Mac. And the ones that have, don't actually listen to them.
>>
Growing up in the 90s and early 2000s, the boomer nostalgia circle jerk over the music (and TV and movies) of their youth was so strong that it convinced me that, even though most of it wasn’t my cup of tea, it was timeless and would be valued forever. In 2024 a lot of it has faded almost completely and most of the interest in it will obviously die out with the boomers themselves. The artists who have fallen off hardest in terms of esteem and interest from that era to today seem to be Janis Joplin, Van Halen, and the Who (the latter of whom I actually have grown to really like).
