They don't know Punk.

Rolling Stone's lists are engagement bait. No reason to take anything they say seriously.

Lmao fuck off
At least they got the top spot right
>>

Alright. Top 10 now. Solve it.

without even diving *too* deep, and allowing them a surface level survey of punk music, Discharge- "Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing" has inspired literally tens of thousands of bands, and is also still quite listenable after 45 years.

10. fine, even though I hate it
9. not punk
8. not punk
7. controversial, but defensible inclusion
6. "post-punk" but whatevs, I guess it's okay
5. not punk
4. no way two Clash albums make top 10 for a genre with 50 years of history.
3. meh
2. not 2nd best of all time, but okay.
1. fine. not the best by a long shot, but safe answer for number 1.

no Gorilla Biscuits, no Minor Threat, no Dead Kennedys, no Rich Kids on LSD or Propaghandi, no Black Flag (?!) NO DISCHARGE no Subhumans "The Day the Country Died" ... at least it's not all NYC art garbage fucking Patti Smith and Sonic Youth like that usually wind up on these lists
>>
>>130392257
The clash aka the bruce springsteen of punk rock arent that good
>>
>>130392257
>Clash S/T over London Calling
Ultimate contrarian opinion.
>>
>>130392257
Bad list but #1 is correct
>>
puts all this weaksauce "punk" shit on the list and forgets the king weaksauce "punk" album of all time, Titus Andronicus - The Monitor

EVERY punk album is equally dogshit, they're DEAD WRONG

Which one should be n1 in your opinion?
>>
Sorry chuds, but Nevermind is Punk Rock secondary on Sonemic, Incorporated's Rate Your Music Dot Com.
>>
>>130392880

I seriously think that Discharge has the best punk album of all time- in terms of originality, every song being a classic, the album still sounds fire after all this time, and they're arguably the most influential punk band of all time. I know that you can go back and say "well they were influenced by such and such, and they were influenced by so and so" but I think Discharge has had more of a *direct* influence on punk music over time than any of those 70s bands.
>>
>>130392993
also, actual punk culture cares way more about Discharge than any of the shit on that list. no one at a show is wearing fucking sleater kinny back patches or has listened to the ramones since they were 16.
>>
>>130392257
If the Ramones is the best punk album, that means punk is a dogshit genre with no range.
>>
>x-ray spex
lmao literally who
>>
>>130392257
they're right but none of those are great albums
>>
>>130392263

>10
Not bad, and inspired better bands, but at bottom just pop music, same with #4
>9
Lol no
>8
Yes, great album, even if technically a precursor
>7
Great pop album, not one of the best punk albums
>6
This is more like it
>5
You're fucking kidding me
>3
Yep
>2
They're cool, they're not top two let alone top 10
>1
Shouldn't be number 1, but it's hard to argue the Ramones don't deserve a top ten spot, they deserve it more than the Pistols or Clash who were bigger as fashion trend-setters
>>
>>130392703
>9 and 8 not punk
Lol lmao even

But yeah for some reasons these publications ignore hardcore
>>
>>130392257
Should London Calling, Pink Flag, and Double Nickels even be considered punk?
Those are more post-punk than straight up punk. Punk rock has its own sound and post-punk is its own thing, too.
>>
>>130392257
Ramones is so fucking overrated I swear to Allan. And the only punk album that matters is Sex pistols.
>>
>>130392993
You think an album from 2002 is the most influential punk album of all time?
>>
>>130392263
learn the rock music 101 then come back
>>
>>130396944
sex pistols are the definition of overrated
>>
>>130392257
>Sleater Kinney
Wtf
Why is that even there? I've never heard this band discussed ever in my life except for one girl who introduced me to them.

I love them but they may that is so absurd. Bikini Kill, sure they are at least notorious but Sleater Kinney is really irrelevant even among 90s femme bands
>>
London Calling isn't punk. In any way shape or form.
>>
why is punk so shit?
>>
>>130392257
I think Punk is so varied that you can make any variation you like to reflect your own idea of what punk is.

If you wanted to make one of important all inspiring bands you could because punk is extremely influential, if you wanted to make a list about the most politically charged you could, or the most popular, or the most experimental, you can go a number of ways.

But if you have no idea what punk is then your list will just reveal a worldview, and this clearly reveals that Rolling Stone, don't know what punk is nor even seem to like it much but just picked the most acceptable bands to a non-punk listening audience.

I personally never take seriously any punk list that doesn't include NMTB at number 1 or 2.
>>
>>130397414

Cont. A real punk list should be

10. (Leaving blank for whoever you like)
9. Rites of Spring
8. Minor Threat LP
7. Crass - Feeding of the Five Thousand (Interchangeable with any one you prefer)
6. Discharge – Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing
5. Damaged - Black Flag
4. Damned, Damned, Damned (interchangeable with Machine gun etiquette)
3. Clash s/t
2. Any of the first three Ramones albums (Though 'Its Alive' is the most punk)
1. Never mind the Bollocks
>>
Discharge is on more battle jackets than any band on that list. Shit, Torso is probably on more battle jackets than anyone on that list. If they're gonna include X-Ray Spex and Wire, might as well include Extreme Noise Terror or Nauseum or anyone else actually good that's actually relevant to punks and not the London/NYC art school student lounges where they'll turn this shit into a lunch playlist.
>>
>>130392257
>Famous Monsters isn't on there
The Rolling Stone is gay.
