RIP Brooklyn Vegan. I used to love trolling the comment section in the mid 2000s to early 2010s before they got rid of it. lol
>>
music journalism is dying and /mu/ doesn't even care
>>
>>131138014
/mu/ is music journalism now, old man
>>
>>131138014
who cares, p4k fucked themselves over by going poptimist. if this were the 2000s and it was a website where hip white guys could chill and talk about indie rock than people would care, but its about beyonce and taylor swift now, and now they dont even pan people anymore because they are scared of fan retaliation, music critics forgot how to be mean

the world wont miss music criticism
>>
>>131135149
Pitchfork is shit they dont even review music anymore its just whatever's mainstream
>>
Last time I looked at it they were covering the gathering of the Juggalos
>>
>>131138216
Seems reasonable, considering how big the event has gotten over the years. On top of that, I just looked it up and Hatebreed is playing the Gathering this year. Brookly Vegan is reporting on a festival that includes Hatebreed on the lineup? Shocked fucking Pikachu face!
>>
>>131138014
obsolete with the advent of youtube and it's clear that the labels are only ever going to pay these guys to promote boring dogshit and people's loser relatives' bands so it's not even useful as a means of discovery at this point
>>
>>131135149
>Brooklyn Vegan
it was kinda decent
>>
>>131138014
music journalism was never relevant to begin with. even Rolling Stone was popular because it was celeb worship slop.

It's so funny when music writers LARP as a persecuted underclass
>>
>>131138014
Inevitably buried under the *pop generals and shitpost threads. I saw the same thing was hitting rags like Metal Injection and Lambgoat a few weeks back. What's the endgame? Just have 1 or 2 writers struggle to do everything? Replace them with chatgpt?
>>
>>131139802
>Replace them with chatgpt?
there it is
>>
>>131135149
I never visited them because I don't live in Brooklyn, I'm not vegan, and I'm not a fag.
>>
>>131138104
Yea, the people who are too scared to shit on dogshit like Linkin Park being laid off won't do anything but make me laugh. Fuck them. They made their bed and they can lie in it.
>>
>>131135149
Good Charlotte is so based for this!
>>
>>131138104
Real shame the majority of zoomers are too scared of being transgressive to the subhuman retards of the music "fandoms" to ever actually say anything. They fear strength in numbers and cancel brigades obviously but can someone grow a pair of fucking balls?
>>
>>131135149
WTF I love good charlotte now
>>
Music criticism is for deaf people with no ears.
Fuck every single one of them.
>>
>>131145180
t. has never changed his opinions or worldview after the age of 14
>>
You have ears don't you?
>Just press play and listen
Doesn't take fucking Rolling Stone to do that.
>>
>>131138104
Pitchfork was already a bunch of awful cunts who tried to make themselves the protagonists instead of just reviewing the music back when they were still shilling indie slop. There was never a time when they didn't suck.
>>
>>131139802
>What's the endgame?
The endgame is people listening to music and forming their own opinions instead of outsourcing them to the type of people who unironically brand themselves as "Brooklyn Vegan." It should be a big improvement.
>>
>>131145891
with the amount of music out there, it is more valuable than ever to have some websites that bring attention to good, unknown music.
>>
>>131138014

I actually got the comment section deleted in 2016 lol. The faggot who owns the site specifically named me when he did it.

The jew who runs BV couldn't handle the heat, it's one of my proudest moments. Same with NPR, when they deleted their comment section they said it was 1% of the users who were ruining it for everyone else.

That's the thing, if you can't take seeing words on a screen you deserve to be tortured by words on a screen.

True words but mu core aka p4k core was a thing still
>>
>>131147879
What kind of comments you made to have an idea?
>>
>>131145126
I think it’s worse than that anon. I think most zoomers just unironically enjoy that slop. They’re extremely susceptible to advertising and shills due to social media algorithms

Imagine wasting your time reading anything on a site called "Brooklyn Vegan"
>>
>>131155308
i dont have to
it was a very nice website for like two decades.
imagine never experience a good music webpage

imagine needing to pose as ignorantly snide everytime you use the internet
>>
>>131155397
It wasn't though, it was easily 98% garbage. And no, before you claim I never went there, I did. It's a bad music site for millennials with bad taste in music. Never once was I introduced to an artist or band there that was actually good. I've literally gotten better recommendations from the youtube algorithm than I ever did from BV and that's sad. If they are being closed down nothing of value is being lost.

>2005
Yes, because that's when a lot of late Gen X people were in a position to be able to start up blogs and web sites like this. Even the oldest Millennials were too fresh out if college and swimming in debt to be able to effectively start up anything like this of their own back in 2005.
>>
>>131156106

No, you weren't.

Yeah, you need to go look up the BV staff who just got fired, not a single Gen X in the lot

I guess they were no longer pulling the necessary traffic to earn enough ad revenue. I've never been to the site so I don't know whether it just became irrelevant or what happened but that name definitely didn't help. I didn't even know it was a music site I always assumed it a health/fitness site for upmarket homosexuals.
>>
>>131161926
>they were no longer pulling the necessary traffic
They mostly covered aging legacy acts from the 90's and terrible new indie slop bands that absolutely no one had ever heard of of cares about. The P4K landfill indie era forward has been a total disaster for alternative/indie music sites. Of course it was doomed.
>>
>>131162002
*or cares about
>>
>>131138014
I was literally thinking about this very topic at a stoplight today while driving home and listening to the Strokes album.

Music criticism really is meaningless in a way that most criticism arguably isn't?
It just seems to me that you shouldn't be running your mouth about why an album is successful or not at what it's trying to do if you don't understand music at a fundamental level.
Just as I wouldn't feel confident to judge paintings or sculpture because I'm ignorant of the art form why would a non-musician be able to tell you why something is valuable or not valuable musically?
Arguably with filmmaking, anyone can critique story-telling (now obviously I'd rather listen to a filmmaker critique films because of the technical knowledge...again) but music taste is subjective (reddit, yes I know, still true) if a song works, it works right? You kind of have to know what makes a song work or else at least if you're going to opine on that aspect...what is the critic critiquing or even providing service-wise?!

IDK I'm rambling, and this is obviously more about criticism than journalism but they're interlinked

The most famous music critics rarely discuss the actual music. Like Christgau or Scaruffi would never say "Wow this song has a great chord progression or a killer hook" they go all academic and talk about the market appeal or the message of the lyrics or the album's place in society in terms of pushing genre boundaries or the artists' personality or race or sexual preference or gender or something even more pretentious
>>
A lot of them can't get remotely technical when discussing the actual music because they don't know anything about music theory either so yes the pivot towards cultural context and consumerism was a natural one.
>>
>>131135149
Did BrooklynVegan do anything other than try to cancel NSBM and adjacent artists?

It starts back in 1998 when (((Clear Channel))) bought up all the radio stations in the United States and restricted their playlists to around 100 artists. This was a disaster which lead the public to stop listening to the radio and go online instead. This is when Napster enters the picture, etc. (((business boomer))) vultures and killed the radio.

Indie music was alive and doing well up until around 2007/2008 when the same (((business boomers))) came in and did a "hostile takeover". They replaced it with corporate backed indie slop (i.e. the now famous 'landfill indie' era) and used the major blogs/indie music sites to push/accomplish this. Pitchfork was the main culprit but basically all the main sites started covering the same bands/artists even though audiences didn't care really about them and they had no genuine support from music fans. They hyped up a ton of shitty music until about 2015 or so when (((they))) realized millennials would never (but in reality couldn't because they were broke) pay money for any of it, then somewhere around 2015 (((they))) finally threw in the towel and gave up. Shortly after that Covid destroys touring and indie music culture never recovered.

Basically the same thing (((they))) did to terrestrial radio stations back in the late 90's with Clear Channel (now known as 'i heart radio' - they changed their name after people begin actively shitting on CC for the radio station buyouts online) but on the "new" post-iPhone internet instead, (((they))) thought (((they))) saw an opportunity to corral everything into a market (((they))) had exclusive control over but it didn't work. After the 2008 housing crash millennials just couldn't afford to pay and then the (((business boomers))) got tired of just barely breaking even. Pitchfork was then sold to Conde Nast and that was the end of it.

Basically they obliterated indie music culture because they were greedy, the whole thing was a ridiculous clusterfuck of boomer hubris.
>>
>>131165052
And before anybody chimes in I know it's a bit more complicated than this but it's a good basic rundown of what happened.
>>
>>131163576
>they go all academic and talk about the market appeal or the message of the lyrics or the album's place in society in terms of pushing genre boundaries or the artists' personality or race or sexual preference or gender or something even more pretentious
One reason why critics tended to love punk but hate heavy metal when both scenes started was that the lyrics of a lot of the early punk bands who leaned into politics tended to be the exact say as the critics while heavy metal was seen as crude or vulgar entertainment for the masses

>>131163576
These aren't pretentious things, music always has a historical and social context, it's what makes it appealing in the first place.
>>
>>131167003
>early punk bands who leaned into politics

Besides the Sex Pistols, what other eaely punk band was leaning into politics?
Heavy metal, if you are referring to the NWOBHM that really solidified Heavy Metal as we know it today with its branches and its 80s legacy, was generally rightwing leaning, with Maiden singing about christianity and Alexander the Great, Def Leppard dissing punk and both bands always flying the Union Jack, Judas Priest singing Red, White and Blue, Witchfinder General having an EP called Soviet Invasion
>>

oh and don't forget Saxon of course.

lol. i made one reply actually. but still curious, you or him mention that 2007/08 was the time when p4k started hyping landfill but they started before, i mean they hyped shit like anco or hold steady to give a few names
>>
>>131175841
No, 2008 is when the landfill indie train really got rolling at full steam. You're right about the timeline, 2005 is when some of the first proto-landfill indie garbage started trickling out of the online blogs (M.I.A.'s Arular immediately comes to mind) but the real push started in 2008. The (((business boomers))) thought they saw a huge money making opportunity when millennials quickly started adopting the iPhone.

Like I said before, the idea was to create a limited marketplace they had full control over which they accomplished to a certain degree. (((They))) planted an M.I.A. song in (((Pineapple Express))) for example and actually got it played on 'i heart radio' stations. The whole thing was fake, planned, and planted but it never made any money so they ended up 404'ing the whole project around 2015. That's when P4K and BV were sold off.
>>
>>131174628
>music always has a historical and social context, it's what makes it appealing in the first place
I think what makes music appealing in the first place is the sound. The melody. The rhythm. The tune. The production. You know, all the stuff you can HEAR. Not what time or place it was made in. If historical and social context was what made music appealing then we might as well be deaf.
>>
>>131176096
this. that's why i find baffling when people whine about the lack of monoculture and the like.
