But it's the fact that they have to ask for it to happen at all before they've even played anything. If the point of the event is to showcase your music, then why not let it speak for itself?; which, it should follow, people would then approach closer to get a better feel on things.
Pic is a good example of what happens organically when a band is good... crazy mosh pit, stage diving, people swinging from the rafters... I dunno, i'm old school and shit was different back then I guess. If someone stood on stage and yelled "I wanna see a circle pit" they would have had all kinds of stuff thrown at them.

That sucks because going crazy in a pit, getting thrown up and crowd surfing hoping like hell you got tossed on stage so you could act a fool for a bit before stage diving, that was half the fun of going to shows.I can't imagine going to a show where everyone just stands around... what's even the point if you can't cut loose with a bunch of other knuckleheads. It's a shame younger generations aren't getting that experience, it was exhilarating.

You build a connection by hanging out after with people and being present before your set and after. I've drank with a few band members and talked, they are usually friendly people and are down to hang with you and buddies if you are also chill. It also helps when they go to other shows that they arent even playing because they get recognised. Good example was a local band in my scene that did this and they went on to play with Nile on their last tour, really nice dudes.

Except for a handful of "big" bands (big in the world of harcdore), it was always like this. Bunch of people standing around and maybe two or three people moshing at the front. Unless you're seeing a band that a bunch of people specifically come to the show to mosh for, you aren't going to see the crowd going nuts. Just the way of the world.
