Yeah. I'm of the view that pop really is a particular form, and that it arrived and really peaked in the 80s.

I really don't think late 00s / 10s pop is of much worth, and I'm really open to anything, always. But it's apparently in need of a serious update. The fact is that you still need genuinely gifted, inspired people behind the scenes giving it life, and something of a conversation with other music, but it's gotten too algorithm-y and stale.
>>
>>75687016
Are you just name dropping the Residents or are you deliberately being dense? Even though their music can be catchy or whimsical at times, it's satire in most of their works. If you actually believe they did it in attempt of chart placement, that's an insult of the lowest kind.

If it's still pop, I ask again, why haven't they had any chart topping singles? And you even agreed that they didn't do it in an attempt of achieving chart placement. Sorry, it's not just "pop". We're in agreement here.

That's not a requirement for pop. If we're limiting ourselves to "pop where the primary goal is to attempt to sell as well as possible" the OP should've specified that.

Most punk music is really pop music. Verse–chorus–bridge structure, catchy melodies. Heavily influenced by 50s rock'n'roll like Eddie Cochran and Jerry Lee Lewis.
>>

As far as all-time-best-selling albums go? It's definitely one of the best. I slightly prefer Rumours, for one, though.

God bless twee poppers for perfecting the art of making the infinitely replayable two and a half minute long pop song, utilizing an average of only one good hook and burrowed guitars they usually don't know how to play. I'm also glad to see some of the best of the genre in this thread.
>>
>>75687340
People are too afraid to admit it. Especially in regards to their "caustic" genre.
>>

A descriptor of a style of music is dependent on a career intention outside of the music?
A song that has all of the qualities of a pop song isn't pop because the guy who made it has no intention of achieving chart placement inside his head?
I'm sorry senpai but that is completely retarded.

"Slave 4 U" was Neptunes
>>
>>75688511
>>75688509
Yeah. Even stuff like Hit Me Baby One More Time had like a trace of latter Dr. Dre in it.

That sound was interesting. It had that bright, cold blast of that tradition of clean, angelic Swedish Pop and Eurodance to it, but also that sultry late 90s rnb / gangsta element.
>>
>>75688544
That's a really good way of putting it

>>75688544
Dre's 2001 was definitely a big deal sonically for a lot of shit that followed after it. I think it's fair to say Dre, Timbaland and The Neptunes were the most forward thinking with crossing hip hop and pop. Possibly my top 3 producers ever.

Not most punk, mostly just The Ramones and the bands that copied them. Black Flag is certainly not pop music Pretty much everyone refers to The Ramones as pop punk nowadays.

>>75688609
I don't think joy division was ever played on the radio, and if they were, it would have been one of the three bangers they actually have. The rest of their music would be challenging to the average pop listener. Stop calling things Pop just because they aren't obscenely obscure and Avant garde.

Yeah, self-indulgent, arrogant-yet-ignorant tryhard dumbfucks do. The Ramones are as 'punk' as anything that came after. It's all pop music.
>>
>>75689510
what's wrong with calling them punk rock?
pop punk is shit like blink 182, green day and not the ramones.
>>
>>75689648
Because "pop" has a negative connotation for idiots who still identify as "punks" or punk fans, and they want to believe the music they're into is special.

If anything, hardcore is *less* punk music than the 70s CBGBs stuff, because *that's what it was fucking called*. You don't just retcon the original association of a genre label when you make music that's distinct (albeit derivative) from it. Louis Armstrong isn't any less jazz than Sun Ra.
