one guitar is three times more expensive. How "easy" is to play depends on the nut, bridge, frets and fretboard. You can get those things corrected on a $300 guitar, but it would cost you around $200 and it would still sound like a cheap guitar.

>>76732552
Good used classical guitars are bitches. Classical guitars sound better with time, but there is a limit to that. If the frets are too worn out, that's a hard thing to change without damaging the instrument.
If you can get a clean used classical guitar, go for it. You are going to get a much better instrument for your money, but, again, be careful.

i'd say find one in a shop specifically for classical guitars, the staff should be knowledgeable and able to work with you and your price range. I'd say go for looks, tonewise you're never going to be sure since the wiring, strings, and so on will make it sound a bit different between each guitar (although active, high output pick ups all sound compressed imo).
S Ibanez are sexy, super comfy, I miss mine.

>>76734148
Not a fan of the ESP offset looking SG shape and their fan inlays, but I'm a big fan of string through tom bridge specs and how comfy ESPs are to play. Have fun.
>>
>>76734467
active pickups sound the same to me. And if you only use a volume knob without a tone knob you are losing all of its purpose. Therefore, use whatever looks better to you, you are going to sound like crap anyway you go.
>>

>>
>>76734835
I would recommend you to get the Roland. They are sturdy and they do the job. I have never tried the Kustom, though.

You are either deaf or you didnt listen to the sound samples I linked. To my ears the Jeff Loomis sound brighter with more clear picks of the strings while the normal blackouts sound smoother, less harsh with more bass.

thinking about going for a Schecter C-8 Deluxe Satin White instead of an Rg8, but really on the edge. I save 150$ on the schecter :/
>>
Every now and then, I'll have mild convienences with my pedal train on where the rails are. What if you had a board that was just the sides and back rail. There'd be slits on the sides that'd let you place the rails where you wish. This would open up the possibility of having different types, like one that'd sink down on one side to allow someone to lay a rocker flat or ones that were completely flat so you could convert over to a two tiered board. Thoughts?
>>
>>76735441

good pick. I have this guitar, got it around a month ago as a first "proper" guitar after years of playing crappy cheap ones. The neck feels great, and the fact it has grover locking tuners on such a budget guitar is great value. makes restringing so much easier.

Other than a bit of fret buzz I'm but pretty happy with mine.
>>
>>76736146
I don't think it's necessary to replace the pick up, yamaha instruments are very nice at all levels, they put a lot of effort in them, at least each is above their price range imo.
They are not very popular as a rockstar icon, but they are pretty popular in studio and sessions. I'd keep it clean like that.

Super snark clip on. I swear by mine, aside from having to hit a 12th fret harmonic on the b of my 5 string. Real solid and reliable, and cheap enough I don't worry about losing it at a gig.

Or basic setup tools; set of feeler gauges, a rule down to the hundreth/10 thou, allen wrenches, precision screw driver set. A capo would help of you don't have one. Also possibly a soldering iron, being able to replace worn parts on the fly is invaluable. Or some mineral oil, naptha and some microfiber cloths; home depot has big packs cheap, as well as "cutting board oil" and vm&p naptha.

Or a multipack of your favorite strings, and picks if you use them.

Or a book on music theory relating to your current level, or something else of that nature. Probably because I'm older, but I prefer paper books when possible because I can get away from a phone, tablet or computer and thus get away from extra distractions. Also, writing notes.

Or some cheap pedals like joyo, reliable cables, guitarfetish pickups, battery powered amp, whatever. I noticed you don't have strap locks or anything of that nature?

Honestly though, if you have to think about guitar stuff you'll probably just end up with something you don't need or won't use. I fell into that trap. Best gift I ever got from a chick on a budget was a few packs of warm wool socks. I work outside in really rough winters, and she knew that I was having trouble keeping the feeling in my toes, she even got a kind that had extra material over the toes so the steel toe doesnt wear a hole in it after the first time they get wet. Better than any cheap guitar related thing she could have gotten me.

Ooh, just thought of something. If she's not a musician but shows some interest you could have her get you a cheap uke, learn some basic chords, then teach her how to play it so you guys can jam together. Yeah, most people don't take ukulele seriously, but it's an easy instrument to pick up without needing to dedicate a lot of time to improving. You guys could probably have some fun fucking around like that.

no reason why
Is a 200$ harley benton gonna do it for a tryout? I got some cash to spend, but not if it's a complete waste
I can handle it being "that weird guitar I have laying around", but I can't have it be an absolute unusable piece of junk
and if it's halfway decent
is it worth an upgrade? Leveling frets, getting a new nut, locking tuners, the whole 9
maybe even getting new pickups
or is it just beyond saving even when it's fresh out of the box?

Beginnerfag here. I have been practicing on an acoustic and my callouses are gradually developing.

Justinguitar says an electric might help me practice longer. Which electric should I buy? He suggests Yamaha Pacificas.

I’m worried I may grow out of it too fast though. As an example, I bought a motorcycle when I first learned to ride and quickly outgrew it - wanted a more powerful one after a year.

Do I actually want a left handed instrument? I've left handed and I'm really unsure.

I've tried my friend's guitar both normally and just playing it upside down to try it out and I don't really don't feel that much of a difference, while a right handed instrument is a lot easier/cheaper to find and more people are familiar with them.

My friend has been encouraging me to pick up the bass, since he wants to start a band and I've expressed interest in wanting to learn an instrument. He thinks I should get a left hand, so I probably will, but I wanted some other thoughts on the matter.

Also he thinks it would be cool to play a left handed bass so our instruments would be pointing in opposite directions when on a stage instead of going the same way.
>>
>>76744523
If it makes no difference to you, go rightie. I'm a left handed guitar player and it's always been a pain in the ass to buy good gear.
>>
>>76744540
I mean, I don't know how to play. Maybe it would easier to decide if I actually knew anything about playing an instrument, but he does make the point of it being easier to do the repetitive easier motion of strumming with your dominant hand naturally while you think about fretting with your non-dominant hand, though also actually picking is fairly important for playing bass too, isn't it?
>>
>>76744589
If you have absolutely zero practice, go as a right handed player. I would if I could, but I've been playing for too long as a left handed. There is no benefit for playing left or right handed. The brain adapts fast and if you don't have any practice at all now, it would be quite easy for you.
If your friend were correct, every right handed player should play as a left handed.
>>
>>76744639
>If your friend were correct, every right handed player should play as a left handed
What?
I'm pretty sure most people strum with their dominant hand and finger with their off hand, which is exactly what he was saying. It's easier "autopilot" your dominant hand and then actually think about what you're doing with the frets with your off hand is what he was saying.
>>
>>76744668
I meant this: "Another easy test is to watch how you clap your hands – the hand that does all (or most of) the movement is the hand that you should strum with. People often assume that your dominant hand should be performing the “more complex” fretting job – however I generally have found that this is not the case. In my experience, the picking hand demands more precise coordination than the fretting hand.
The one piece of advice that really irks me is the old “you’ll have an advantage with your dominant hand doing the fretting, cos it’s erm…harder“. Think about how silly that advice is. If that were true, why are all righties not playing left handed? Why is a left handed guitar not the norm? It’s just completely nonsensical."
Which is the same he was saying.
Anyway, you should go right handed, but it looks like you already made up your mind.

Well, I clap with my left hand mostly, making myself do it with the right hand feels kind of odd.

I was thinking I was going to just get a right handed bass for a long time but I've been rethinking it lately.

Reading about the Chapman guitars, they have things like stainless steel frets, setneck/neckthru, hipshot locking tuners, coil splitting, and in general look pretty nice and high quality.
I feel like since I own an sg already I might just upgrade it in the future and it will roughly be on par at least in sound to a Gibson.
>>
>>76745754
Do you need coil splitting? Do you need ss frets? Locking tuners are always nice.
Look for a Schecter Banshee if you want those specs, because even though Chapman and Schecter are made in the same factory, they are not using the same components. Chapman is running a small run of guitars, so they still have to cut in some places.

I want coil splitting because I think I'd enjoy the option, ss frets sound good to me in the long run, since they won't wear out as easily. I'm not familiar with schecter at all to be honest.
I'll compare specs and prices but in really leaning towards the Chapman and hope some people who actually own or played them can say something about them
>>
>>76745954
If you play every night 3 hours straight forward for 5 years, maybe you'll need ss frets. Chapman, PRS SE, Schecter, Reverend, and some other brands that don't come to me right now are made in the same south korean factory. Quality wise they are the same. Literally made by the same machines.
>>
>>76745973
What prs se model would you recommend? Some are half the price of a Chapman pro and some are roughly same, I know they are supposed to be good but they lack the "premium" specs Chapman offers for the pro range, no?
>>
>>76746024
The only thing they lack is the ss frets. And different pickups, but that really depends on your own taste. The new PRS SE Custom 24 has coil split too. And they look nicer, imo. The cheaper models don't have that, but if you already have a guitar with humbucker, try something with p90, unless you play with high gain.
>>

same except i leave the dummy pickups and knobs there to fool would-be copycats

I'm left handed at basically everything except when I tried guitar out for the first time, I preferred right handed.

Though if I learnt left handed, I think I would have regretted it. Just learn right handed. Once you get past the initial hurdle you will be fine.

Feels bad man. Guess I'll keep an eye out until a good used one comes up. Either that or the price drops

I have all the effects I need for now.
Haven't considered buying a used guitar tho, isn't it better to buy new with a higher price?

If the guitar is mint, you are saving money. There are a lot of middle age crisis dad rockers selling their gear nowadays.

Would you rock this?

Harley Benton instruments are okay for a taste, they are generally good value (but still not great guitars). I can't say for certain with that 8 string, but I got a 5 string bass from them and it was just meh.

I'd definitely not upgrade it a huge amount, some DIY is okay but I certianly wouldn't pay to get it set up and absolutely wouldn't upgrade the pickups.

The RG8 is pretty much the cheapest decent 8 string.
