I just dont want to make a redundant purchase if the eq is enough then no need for the attenuator. I want to see how much more gain my jcm900 has. I hardly use it past 4 on master volume. Was thinking of a transparent od too.

Been looking at this lads. What do you think?
>>
>>
>>79429064
Im not sure. I might use the fx loop the jcm900 is an amp that is kinda picky about pedals. Some sound decent in fron but amazing through fx loop some sound not so good on fx loop. You dont think Guitar center will let me bring my fullstack to try it out would they lol

It absolutely will not work like an attenuator if it's in the FX loop. It would only work in between the head and cabinet if it was a line level EQ and you also had an impedance load box with a line out and a slave power amp, which is obviously an impractical clusterfuck.
Just get an attenuator if you want driven tube sound at low volume.
>>
>>79429093
>rhythm circuit
Wat?
>>
>>79429338
Hmm i see. The eq also has a gain slide maybe that will bypass my need to push the tubes into ultra gain.
>>
>>79429350
Er, nm. I guess it's a Jag/JM thing. Less treble than lead circuit due to pot values. Seems superfluous. Just use a tone knob, amirite?

hey /gg/, im having trouble playing bar chords and i think im having a retard moment. im supposed to hold the strings down on the bars that separate the frets right? or do i have the strings down on the frets themselves?
>>
>>79429444
On the fingerboard, not on the frets.
>>
>>79429444
put your fingers near the bottom of the fret, not on the fret. this will prevent fret buzz. also, don't put too much pressure because that will make the strings go sharp
>>
>>79429420
Isnt the trem a source of problems for this design?

>>
>>79429457

(ty for your help tho i was genuinely confused)
>>
>>79429493
Practice. Play the barre chord arpeggiated one string at a time and note where youre muting or not pressing enough or too hard adjust and repeat until you can play it with no issues the first time .

Want to know the secret to fretboard fluidity?
>>
>>79429444
>that wrist
Fix this.
>>
>>79429444
>>79429493
The frets *are* the bars. The spaces in between are the regions where you put pressure on the string. You always want your fretting finger to be touching the string as close as possible to the fret but not on top of it. You also want your finger to be as perpendicular to the fretboard as possible. With a barre you want to angle your finger such that the side of the finger is what makes contact with the string, because it is much less fleshy than the rest of the finger. You also want to practice getting it in as straight a line as possible so that every string is fretted with equal precision.
>>
>>79429701
Having friends with a terrible ear sucks though

Is there some trick to inducing feedback in the thin strings above the 12th fret beyond playing at obscene volumes? I can trigger it just fine on the bass strings but with GBE I might as well be humping the amplifier and I don't get any feedback going.

How important to you is playing fast? Should we be playing faster than our ability to prehear the notes?
>>
>>79432988
I'll try it out after my lunch break anon, thanks!

>>79433032
I feel that playing fast is something that can either serve the music ( a good thing) or serve the musician (a bad thing, also known as wank). Malmsteen is a guy whose playing looks to me like it serves himself, in that it's an ego boost to flaunt his abilities and his showmanship, and not about any musical connection. Meanwhile, taking someone like Robert Fripp, he can play very fast but it is always connected to the music being played, it feels necessary, it feels like the speed is there to serve the music. The music is more interesting that the skill of the guitar player, that's the deciding factor.

I have a fair share of biases though, that's just how I see these things. I don't like showboating and flashiness, which is pretty contrary to a lot of what people like in guitars. And I can't play even nearly as good as either of them anyway.
>>
>>79433032
Personally not important at all, my biggest motivation to practice technique comes only when the music I want to play asks for it and I can't play it cleanly yet. Unfortunately what I like often demand good technical skills
>>
>>79433032
>How important to you is playing fast?
as important as being able to play anything else. the idea that a guitar solo has to build to a high speed to be exciting is a disease
>Should we be playing faster than our ability to prehear the notes?
of course that's fine
>>
>>79433308
technique is not speed

Somewhat important. You can create "textures" by playing fast enough which I enjoy. I don't listen to any wanking youtube tier shit or much and being able to play a ton of notes in a short period doesn't interest me at all. Picking hand speed is fairly unimportant to me, but being able to maneuver around the fretboard easily and smoothly transition between phrasing and well voiced bends/slides/etc.is very important. Frettng hand "speed" is actually really important to playing many slower pieces with good articulation. I don't really play anything more hard than LZ, and mostly play traditional and country these days.

Yo my dudes need some help - getting back into guitar in a big way and would like to know if I'm going about it the right way.

So my goal is to get into the guitar wank and twinkly stuff side of guitar playing but instead of jumping the gun, I do see the value of learning fundamentals. I have three hours a day to set aside for practice. So I broke down my practice like this: 1 hour of scales (major and minor pentagon) and music theory, 1 hour trying to learn few Chon songs on YouTube but idk about how to spend the other hour I'm trying to decide whether to learn blues or jazz guitar. I love both styles and I know blues is considered as a corner stone. Which would be beneficial to learn in the beginning? How's the practice routine looking?

Some advice, lads?

How would you EQ a clean electric guitar, which basically simulates the role of an acoustic guitar, playing chords over a single singer in a live setting? I'm thinking 5.5 on the bass, 6.5 on the mids, and maybe to roll the presence and treble back to 4.5. I'm thinking the singer should occupy the highest frequencies, so it's a good idea to roll back the treble slightly on the amp, and boost it slightly on the singer's mic.

Is this a good approach, or am I completely wrong? I'm not particularly good at setting EQ as a sound guy, only when it comes to crafting my own solo tone. However, tomorrow I have to play the role of both the sound guy and the guitarist, so some pointers would be appreciated.

This is also wrong. Most modern Jazz playing uses the modulating pentatonics that you find in people like Coltrane. It's pretty difficult and you can do some really neat outside playing with it. If you want to get into it look into Jerry Bergonzi's books.

>>79441540
You need to see the frets as notes and not as patterns and shapes, that way you have references and target notes for you to start your line which makes it easy to do things like switch positions very quickly.

Haha, good one. I'm asking for different opinions on EQ. It's not like I picked a guitar up for the first time yesterday. It's just that I've always played with a bass behind me, so I've always steered clear of the bass knob in a live setting.

You're not providing any argument against what I said. Bergonzi Pentatonic scales are really fundamental to modern jazz playing. If you don't use them, and just do chord scale or chord tone soloing you tend to sound like they just picked you up from the 60's.
>>
>>79441683
I'm sorry, but could you elaborate a bit more on modulating pentatonics? I have always avoided using them in place of a regular major scale because I have always only heard my gf's dad using pentatonics for generic doop-doop-bend wankery, and I have been unsuccessful trying to play them jazzy
>>
>>79441921
I'm calling bullshit on the Coltrane claim.

Any tips on how to do this?
>>
>>79441737
it looks tryhard not in a good way
>>
>>79441959
And I'm telling you you're wrong. Are you saying that Coltrane did not use modulating pentatonics or are you saying that his use of modulating pentatonics does not permeate modern Jazz? Both of these statements are wrong. Keep in mind - modern means "modern" stylistically. So you won't find these in someone playing Gypsy Jazz or Trad but you will find these being used if you go see something at the Village Vanguard.

Here's an example (since I've been listening to BBNG's IV lately), Leland Whitty's solo on Confessions Pt 2 in the beginning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXm0j1Yq0TU

Compare to Coltrane's Impressions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UU-999dO9Cw

I don't know what you're trying to say or call "bullshit" on but you're a brainlet.

>>79442021
Think about the notes when you're playing them instead of just playing patterns. Say them out loud and in your head.
>>
>>79442074
>Are you saying that Coltrane did not use modulating pentatonics.
Exactly.
>>
>>79442107
Well, then you're an idiot. That's one of the things he's famous for. Early Coltrane is an inside player famous for his sheets of sound, late coltrane is famous for free and modal playing. A Love Supreme uses them a shit ton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fth9UUa1Mfw
>>
>>79442145
Do your homework, mongoloid. Print the circle of fifths and tape it to your roof. Then listen to Coltrane again.
>>
>>79442074
Ok, thanks
>>
>>79442204
Are you just shitposting? Bergonzi's books are literally a formalization of what Coltrane is doing. You can hear the pentatonic scales all over the place in A love Supreme. Just to give some examples:

- Opening: Coltrane cycles through patterns in a petatonic on Bb dorian
- 3:10: Pentatonic run using outside notes
- 4:47 same cycling of patterns on Bb dorian with outside notes added in

What the fuck you on bro?

You are so fucking stupid. Every statement you have made about Coltrane is wrong. I'm not saying anything about Bergonzi's work, so you can stick up your ass or eat it, I don't care. It is quite a retrospective fallacy arguing that Coltrane was doing something that was written way after he did it, and THAT ALREADY HAD A NAME.

It's not wrong. You can hear Coltrane modulating Pentatonics and I cited where. What the fuck do you want me to analyze a transcription for you? Also I said that Bergonzi formalized what Coltrane was doing you moron. Do you know what that means?

Here's my challenge to you: How would you characterize the use of pentatonic scales in Coltrane's modal playing if you think what I'm saying is wrong.

Again with this fucking retrospective bullshit. So Debussy was playing Coltrane changes and therefore Bergonzi. I guess you play sax. You are the typical monophonic instrument brainlet.

No I play guitar, hence why I'm in /gg/. Also:
>Coltrane changes
>Bergonzi
Coltrane Changes is modulating key signatures by major thirds so I don't see what that has to do with pentatonic scales. What a weird and wrong reductio. I'm also not saying that "Coltrane was playing Bergonzi". My original claim is that pentatonic scales, for outside playing are really integral to the sound of modern jazz and the most notable person to popularize their use in the jazz idiom is John Coltrane. I then said if you wanted to see a formalization of this you can check out Jerry Bergonzi's books on pentatonic soloing which he based heavily on the work of Coltrane. Are you autistic?

fucking hell, read a fucking book on Coltrane.
Are these major thirds?

Do you understand that you cannot throw random definitions? A square with three sides is not a square. If you claim something and give a bad definition of it is not the meant object.

I know what Coltrane changes are. I'll use Giant Steps to show how retarded you are so that you understand why you should shut the fuck up. When you modulate by major thirds you spell an augmented triad. In Giant Steps the modulating by major thirds starts on Eb. So We get Eb, G, and then B. This spells an Eb augmented triad giving Coltrane changes its distinct sounds (though this was taken from a Rogers and Hart tune afaik).

If I'm wrong, then what is your alternate analysis of Coltrane Changes (as well as the use of pentatonic scales in Coltrane's modal playing - something you still have not clarified).
