So the Pulitzer Prize just lost all of its worth today
>>

Well deserved, his music is paving the way for hip-hop to be seen as a serious form of music on par with the likes of John Coltrane and Mozart's best works.

To be honest, it should have been To Pimp A Butterfly. Damn was merely a putrid meme compared to his true magnum opus.

Rap music always lacked a sort of self-awareness and introspection in favor of bravado, tough personas and some utterly aggressive narratives. It couldn't transcend the lies African Americans lived inside, and accept our inherent flaws while remaining optimistic for the future. Kanye, often compared to Kendrick, tried to encapsulate the beauty of pride, confidence and godlike divinity, but ultimately failed due to his weak, unimaginative imagery that makes the likes of Tolkien, Rowling, and Lewis cringe. It failed to deliver a true fantasy, opting for moronic clichés and insipid, false ideas. To Pimp a Butterfly eschews its misleading visions, culminating in a visceral insight into the plight of African Americans. Although its lyricism was heavily rooted into the cruelty of reality, it conjured up imagery of a piercing arrow of light into the fragile orbs of the future, reveling in the scarred uncertainties of life. Ironically, TPAB managed to be more of a whimsical fantasy than MBDTF in that regard. It conveyed pride without excess, and showed the listener instead of telling, a fault Kanye always fell into. TPAB was a masterpiece in music, as it finally bridged the ravine between hip hop and art, and onto the rest of the universe.

10/10. The greatest album of the decade.

I see it as a belated award for TPAB the same way the Grammy AOTY becomes a legacy award when they give it to a dad-rock act like Dylan or Steely Dan. It's more than music and with hip-hop's current dominance they can't just let it all slide without at least acknowledging the moment.

No, he's not. He's like Beyonce. Being overhyped for no reason despite not having the global sales or hits to reflect it. It's weird as if there is an agenda to push any black or mostly black ancestry as being super talented and legendary for being political or "feminist". Same shit is happening with Cardi B.

Bob Dylan's music represents the moment when all American folk culture was subsumed by popular culture (this process started with The Weavers in the 60s), and that honestly disgusts me. Kendrick's music is just part the post-Dylan American musical landscape. I'm not fond of it and believe he was given the award do to a combination of shallow poptimism and the judges' ability to project their intersectional sentiments on his work, but it never be less deserving than Dylan's music.
>>
>>79446114
Conscious music isn't just about calling out some sort of system. In nature, it's introspective and looks inward, detailing personal struggles and internal conflicts, to even simple little thoughts and observations about the world.

1: My race has no pertinence to this discussion, or even this board.
2: Ever heard of "stream of consciousness" style writing? Where ideas are written in an abstract, personal and esoteric manner? That's essentially a style explored in Conscious Hip Hop, or Conscious music in general.
3: I don't even get how you could write these (>>79446166, >>79446142) as a response to >>79446114. It doesn't even make sense. His original comment didn't even detail anything that derogatory, other than a vague statement about whites. What would lead you to write such horrid things?

The Pulitzer was always my pipe-dream. I never really thought I'd get it, of course. But how amazing would it be to get that kind of recognition for my art, you know? I (some would say foolishly) always held it to such high regard. I've heard this guy's name before but never bothered. So after hearing this news, I gave the first half of the album a listen and am wondering what I'm missing. I'm sitting here thinking, "Am I old and crotchety now? Am I 'that adult' that just doesn't get it?" I have never felt so out of touch with the world. This bothers me much more than it should.

This... and

So I was takin' a walk the other day
And I seen a woman—a blind woman
Pacin' up and down the sidewalk
She seemed to be a bit frustrated
As if she had dropped somethin' and
Havin' a hard time findin' it
So after watchin' her struggle for a while
I decide to go over and lend a helping hand, you know?
"Hello ma'am, can I be of any assistance?
It seems to me that you have lost something
I would like to help you find it."
She replied: "Oh yes, you have lost something
You've lost… your life."

There's a difference. The word "nigger" was intended to dehumanize African Americans, while "nigga" aims to reflect and distort it into a more positive term, removing its negative connotation into a friendlier (albeit still raunchy) term. Kendrick utilizes the latter.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Kendrick Lamar. The music is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of music theory most of the lyrics will go over a typical listener’s head. There’s also Kendrick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his songs- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Holup Kanga literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these songs, to realise that they’re not just catchy- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Kendrick Lamar truly ARE racists- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the artistry in Rick’s existential lyric "Ooh that pussy good, won;t you sit on my taste bloods,” which itself is a cryptic reference to the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead,. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Kendrick Lamar’s genius wit unfolds itself on their ipods. What fools.. how I pity them.

Am I really one of the only people on this board that can listen to J.I.D., ScHoolboy Q, Pantera, Vivaldi, Kali Uchis, Johnny Cash, Alice in Chains, and Massive Attack all in the same playlist while just browsing? I don't get people who say "I listen to x & y but I will NEVER listen to Z". I thought people grew out of that mindset after high school? I never really liked country or punk rock but I'm still open to suggestions to people on here and family and am starting to listen to it. Do people really love their own little bubbles that much?

Without even delving into your phobia of African Americans winning awards, if you'd actually listen to Kendrick's work you'd know a lot of it is a commentary on Gang culture. GKMC and TPAB both touch on the toxic elements of gang culture while also critiquing systemic issues. Songs like DNA are similar to MAAD City or Backstreet Freestyle which are obviously ironic when taken contextualized with the rest of the album.

Anyway it's pretty obvious that this isn't for Damm specifically but more for Kendrick's other work which is more substantial that they missed out on. It's like how Ornette Coleman got in the 2000's but his most significant achievements are obviously his free jazz work from the 60's and 70's.

De La, Quest, Outkast, Hieroglyphics and Pharcyde were great for trying to push the boundaries of hip-hop and mixing genres. Then in the 2000s shit got all fucked and we just got rehashes of the same stuff and now we got modern hip-hop where everything has a trap beat

Well there are almost no rappers who can be considered serious artists. Who else besides Kendrick? Kanye, MF Doom... I guess Tyler the Creator? Most of the best rappers during the genre's prime were great lyricists but mediocre at songcrafting and putting together albums. Now the genre's in a sorry state where almost all the output is interchangeable memerap. It may be culturally relevant today but if you look at the best output the genre has offered and compare it to rock/jazz it's pathetic.

DAMN is the best kendrick album, and this is from a kendrick fan since 2010

that album really united everybody last summer. hipsters, basic bitches, hood ass dudes, #BARZYO rap fans, fuckin metal dudes, everybody man

i dont really know or care about the pulitzer prize because it doesn't really matter whether the album would have won or not, and it doesn't matter how many grammys or fucking anything it won because it united america in a way that is rarely seen in music and that's cooler than any stupid ass award could ever be

I'm not going to lie. I become really resentful of how hip hop is so celebrated now. One of my favorite artists is a pop-r&b artist and their music doesn't get as much praise as a less nicely produced more simplistic hip hop record. It just really pains my ass.
>>
I also hated the rock domination in the 2000's and the EDM domination in the early 2010's so there's that.

No I meant in the genre's history, which is why I mentioned MF Doom. Outkast is the big one I forgot, there are also some pretty niche rappers who made amazing albums in the past like Cannibal Ox, but regardless when digging through the genre's history you have to start scraping the bottom of the barrel real fast in search of great musical art and not just great lyrics.

They weren't paying attention. I don't know what they were trying to accomplish with this, but it can't be just because DAMN. was that good of an album. Kendrick released two albums before this that were both better than DAMN. To me this sounds like the choice of some people who wanted to make a point. As far as hip-hop goes, Kendrick is a good artist to pick. DAMN., however is not the album to pick.
This whole thing seems phoned in. I don't like it.

I'll admit I'm a youngfag but who were the rock acts dominating last decade? I thought the genre had already largely died by that point.
>>
As someone who really loves hip-hop music, this is not right. It feels patronizing more than anything. If they respected the genre, they would have waited for an album that deserved it. This award comes off as a hollow gesture of people eager to show everyone how great they are by picking *gasp* RAP music to win the award.

the album is a metaphorical afterlife and Kendrick being a vehicle for the listener goes to Hell where the rest of the lions share of the album is about the tragedy of human beings and all their vices.

The conclusion to this theme is GOD, God is a dualistic force that through fate placed humans in this predicament and while humans suffer and strive and even blossom despite everything, in the belief god is all good, God "laughs all the way to the bank"

Look, I agree that this is what TPAB was going for and I think it did it pretty well. I like the album. And I've never heard of this award before (sorry folks I'm uncultured), but if I had to guess, based on how it was only given to classical and jazz artists, that the award was granted to good MUSIC, not a good MESSAGE.

Yeah okay cool, TPAB had some pretty good Jazz samples and the reference game was there, but for fuck sakes man. Maybe I should give it another listen since it's been awhile, but I don't remember TPAB blowing me away with any kind of outstandingly unique musical composition. If it were about music, and they were ready to give it to someone other than those jazz and classical musicians they did before, why not give it to some prog-rock band, or even Death Grips for that matter? It just makes no fucking sense. It should always be music over message when it comes to things like this.
