The studio albums are mediocre and the live stuff is even worse
>>
Correction: The studio albums are pretty bad and the live stuff is better but still mediocre
>>
pleb
>>
you gotta be high to consider them good, should have been called Pre-Malone
>>
>>83889591
nobody actually likes them
>>
>>83889642
Hey now, I hate this band but I know a fuckton of people who are genuinely crazy passionate about this band
>>
>>83889658
no they're passionate about drugs and hippie shit
nobody goes to their shows for the music
>>
I can’t name a single song (nobody can), yet they’re constantly mentioned as one of the greatest bands ever
>>
yeah they suk
>>
>>83889591
Don't even bother with the studio stuff, nobody actually listens to it. Stick to the live stuff. 1972 Veneta, OR is a good one, listen to the show as if it was an album
>>
>>83889591
they have some good songs, but its like 1% of their songs.
Check out the songs Cumberland Blues, Uncle Johns Band, Casey Jones, One More Saturday Night, Till The Morning Comes

I'm not saying they're fantastic songs, but they're at least good.
>>
>>83891559
this.

i know a decent amount of dadrock yet never heard their songs before

very odd

They highlight everything wrong with music culture and kids in general these days. You all don't interact with people and make friends, god forbid listen to a bootleg tape of a jam band together. Instead you press play with your headphones on tucked safely away from the world around you. No wonder you don't get the Dead.

Nice boomerpost.

So the dead aren't about music it's just an excuse for degenerate potheads to congregate in one place and get high

I get that the dead aren't for everybody but I play the guitar (poorly) and I like Jerry's lead and Bob Weir's rhythm. I actually don't necessarily prefer their live albums because I think the can meander a little too much for my taste. These are some good songs

THE DEAD SUCK ASS
>>

>>
>>83889591
They aren't that bad. A lot of their stuff is pretty good. What makes people hate them is their fans obsessive love of the Grateful Dead, it is ALL they listen to. They are pretty annoying.
>>
>>83900648
Grateful Dead fans are fucking morons. Notice how none of them are real musicians or have any real taste. They just blindly circlejerk the same band over and over. Some of their stuff isn't bad. American Beauty is solid, but a lot of it is pure shit and let's be real, they had a couple decent live albums but a lot of it is also shit. No reason to be collecting hundreds of bootlegs or whatever or be comparing different years and shit as if there's some remarkable difference. It's the same as the studio version but twice as long with some wankery, crowd noise, and worse vocals/flubbed lyrics, every single time.
>>
>>83900739
Back in college, I shared a townhouse with a few deadheads. All they ever played was the Dead, again and again, and they got annoyed if I ever played anything else. They insisted that the Dead were the greatest, and every other band in the world sucked. They also frequently had their bummy, stupid, dirty friends over to listen to the Dead. That was a long year.
>>
>>83900831
Yuck.

Honestly I don't understand the appeal at all. American Beauty is a 7/10, Workman's Dead is maybe a 5/10, Europe '72 is a 6/10, Live/Dead is 6/10 (first half is 8, second half is like a 4) most of their other releases are straight garbage.

Why all this hype for a band that was moderately popular/acclaimed/decently good for maybe 3 years max, between 1969 and 1972). The rest of their career was literally nothing except for that one big hit in the 80s.

Even in 1995 when what was pretty much their absolute worst year ever, the band continued to sell out 20k+ stadiums. That's not to mention the tons of people who didn't have tickets hanging out in the lot. For a band with such a "nothing" career, they sure had a massive traveling circus following them around and shelling out money for tickets for most of the year. You know literally nothing about the band (that hit is "Touch of Grey", btw) beyond what can be gleaned in five minutes of skimming the Wikipedia article.

I'm American and never heard either of those tracks in my life, and I listened to classic rock radio fairly often growing up. I heard fucking Billy Squire more than I heard the Grateful Dead, I just know who they are because of the acid subculture and live shows not from their music.
>>
>>83901766
That's because their studio stuff is forgettable, and you can't play a 30min long live song on the radio. Don't even bother with their studio stuff, this band is about the live recordings.

yeah i'm 21 and i literally have never heard a single grateful dead song on the radio. and i listen to the local classic rock station in alabama quite a bit.

they're not as popular as the liberal media would have you believe. the allmans have a good 3-4 hits in regular rotation. tom petty has nearly 20. The Grateful Dead? Not a single one. I could not tell you what they sounded like or what albums they made or who's in them. They're nobodies outside of that fucking hippie circle.

same story with that hack bruce springsteen and irish morons U2. liberal media props them both up as these great icons of classic rock music and champions of causes when in reality you hear maybe 3-4 of his songs tops on classic rock station. what happened to all those supposed "hits", huh? and petty did that springsteen style 100x better anyway.

bruce springsteen is as canon as led zeppellin

You obviously haven't listened to enough U2 and Bruce Springsteen then other than what gets played specifically on your classic rock radio, but whatever. They have way more hits than just 3-4 songs.

U2 and Springsteen legit had a lot of hits
The Dead though, not really a radio band more of a subculture cult band

>you can't 'get' the dead until you've listened to them on acid.

can you speculate why this is?
>>
>>83904083
The Dead had a ton of singles that were in constant rotation on the FM dial in the early 70s: Truckin', Uncle John's Band, Box of Rain, Sugar Magnolia (two versions were hits: the American Beauty version in 1970 and then live E72 version in early 1973), Eyes of the World, Casey Jones, One More Saturday Night, US Blues.

Also, even stuff that maybe didn't get as much play like "Ripple" is still really well known. I remember singing along to it at summer camp.
>>
i would have fully agreed w/ you anon up until a year ago. i now think the dead is one of the greatest bands of all time, made up of some of the most creative musicians in rock n roll
after getting my wisdom teeth out i was bedridden for a few days and i decided to watch the Dead documentary series on amazon, seeing as I was always told to listen to the Dead but never really got into them. it really contextualized them and their importance in music both at the time and in music history.
i know its cliche'd to make a drug analogy, but as with acid and tripping, you kind of have to let go of pretence with the Dead - you have to ignore how hokey they are, how uncool they come off and the annoying nature of some of their more outspoken fans, and embrace the kind vibes they emit. you gotta really realize that, especially in their live shows, these are 7 - 10 musicians that are at the top of their fucken GAME, and have spent years and years practicing, playing, and experimenting together, and that would go out every night not knowing where their music would take them. they were pure experimentalists, which doesn't really come across in their studio output, and takes time to realize in their live output.
and remember: no band is for everyone. just because a bunch of fucken people like em, doesn't mean you should too. but understand that their appeal often gets muddled in how people express themselves when talking about the Dead, and that everyone's understanding of them is personal and different - so maybe you just gotta find yours.

if you're looking for some essential listening, American Beauty is probably their most recommendable album, and has some killer songwriting on it. as for live albums, Europe 72' has a great mix of reimagined studio tracks as well as some of the best versions of their live-only songs. another great live recording is their 5/8/77 show at Cornell - a great idea of what a full Dead show at their peak sounds like. good luck, be kind
>>
Any band that doesn't hype up their studio albums and focuses primarily on live shows doesn't gain any traction among the /mu/ crowd.
>>
>>83904509
not anon you replied to but it helped me unfold all the different things all the musicians were doing. Phil's playing off of Weir's rhythms, who's syncopating with the drummers, who're matching Pigpen's organ, who's backing Jerry's noodling, which is in and of itself a marvel. just a bunch of fucking phenomenal musicians whose talent becomes impossible to ignore on acid
