The shifting while braking seems like the biggest advantage rather than one hand braking the front and reaching for the dt/bar end with the other hand. Have not used brifters since 2015 desu, so I can't really compare.

Which is not a bad idea for someone relatively new to riding because it lets you explore what you want from riding. Upgrademaxing isn't inherently bad either, it lets you understand how each component plays a role into being a bike. my sentiment about 32mm gp5ks being pretty freakin good on hardpack dirt/gravel still stands. even something like a 35mm gk, rh, or soma tire can do some double duty road/off-road well enough that i wouldn't really consider like a specific gravel tire.

can you fit something like a 50mm conti race king? if you can, yeah i mean you have something pretty versatile if you can't otherwise have more than one option for a bicycle. something like that will do pretty well on somewhat loose xc type terrain.

This is a fairly old pic I've done more progress on the build but I'm still not happy with the front end. It feels like more reach and less stack than my race bike despite being a frame size smaller and 10mm shorter stem. They are flared bars with a lot of drop which partly explains why they look so upright. But overall I would say the handlebars are the component I'm the least happy about if you don't count the FD (that i ended up taking to a shop and got mega scammed, plus it didn't work any better. Never trust shops)

Get bars the same width as your shoulder joints.
I changed my 420mm bars to 380mm and my comfort has improved dramatically while the steering stability remains the same.
There are some things good shops do very well, such as mtb suspension service and frame repair, but most shops suck.

Just bought this from an old lady for $140, she said it was her husbands and he used to take it into the sierras when he was a kid in the 60s and 70s.
Can't find any info on the brand, has some weird hub braking system and check out that chain tensioner

There is no brand called 'Woodsie', that's the name of tan individual bike, built in the early 1960s by John Finley Scott.

The Woodsie was stolen in the 1960s and was never seen again, however pictures of it inspired the likes of Gary Fisher and Tom Ritchey who based their designs on this legendary off road bike. Many consider it to be the first mountain bike and you can see the influence it might have had in terms of geometry and wheel sizing, when compared with early ATB and MTB designs.

That bike might be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars dude.

Turned the gravel steamroller into a street machine.
Carbon bars, seatpost and saddle saved quite a lot of weight.
Also fitted some spd es600 pedals and saved around 100g.
Ratio is now 46/15 and the 28mm Gp5k's roll like a dream.
And the best thing is that i still dont have any idea how much it weighs because i dont have a scale.

What I know about your bike is it's pretty damn period correct, the stem might be a little high(may be a max limit somewhere), and it's from the 80's.
Univega was a company made by ben lawee who was a bicycle importer. First he had italvega, then when he saw the japanese were making great bikes he did univega, and bertoni at a similar time to keep importing italian bikes too.

The gran record is a mid-high level bike of the era with a nice frame by miyata (easy to tell with the chromoly triple butted sticker). As the other anon said 105 group which is a solid dependible group still made today in a different form.
Looks like a 56cm frame and I presume you are around 5'8 to 6ft or so.

the 105 groupset is a quality group. the 2 above it (by Shimano) perform about as well but they're lighter. there's a bunch of named groups below it, then there's low-tier stuff for Walmart bikes that just says Shimano on it. 105 is a quality group.

What's your secret hack on tightening the nuts on the spindle? My nuts are like a 7mm and a 9mm(as cone) about 1in beyond the dustcap.
Used a 7mm wrench and a flat head to hold the 9mm but it's fucking annoying.
Tried locktite but that didn't hold the 9mm.

Is there a secret hack people know for cup and cone pedals. Otherwise I WILL just toss them.

Its a bit unfair in the sense that its not easy to replicate but I just made a 'deep ring spanner' on a shaper for a set of pedals so I can have two hex tools that slide over each other.
But imo really good pedals at least come with a slot and anti rotation shim or depend on shims. You can also adjust most pedals by cutting some shim stock and bottoming out the nut.

Yeah I was doing that with a screwdriver for the cone and since the pedal doesn't allow easy access for the wrench I had to go in at an angle.
Cheap, older pedals but every once in a while I like an annoying challenge.
Managed to get one to hold it's adjustment but the other locked up on me.
This is the only bike part where I did want cartridge bearings/bushings. I will try again soon enough, curse a couple times, and it will work.

i think the shoe you use matters far, far more that having pins or using rat trap pedals. I have shoes that don't offer grip on even the most aggressive pin pedals, and i have shoes that don't slip very much on rat trap pedals like the mks sylvan or touring lite pedals and kind of nullify having large mtb pedals with pins. maybe my feet are just small enough that i have no issue with smaller rat trap pedals.
clipless is honestly pretty nice for comfort over long distances as well, helps to isolate variables for endurance rides that are 60, 70, 80 miles long. they also do hold far better than any pinned pedal on shitty terrain or off-road.
it's nice, but you don't NEED clipless at all. toe clips suck ass though, especially the atrocity toe clip pedals like pic rel.

You're painting with a broad brush here. Sure, it's a matter of personal opinion and while I could not live without toe clips you dislike them.
But the 600s in picrel for example, require you to be using the cleat that came after the slotted cleat and before clipless. They will almost not work without the cleat.
Not having the cleat is better with old style quill pedals, those call for the slotted cleat which you can still get but they're even more rare than the above.
The only pedals that are actually, designed for the use of toe clips with cleatless shoes are flat, smooth, single sided platform pedals. Im stressing flat and smooth because even Lyotard MB23, Campa Triomphe or SR SP11 pedals, for example, were designed to be used with the slotted cleat. Many contemporary copies of the MB23 were designed for flat soled shoes.
So if you want to try toe clips, get the right cleat to go with your pedal, where applicable.
I like the fact that I can always make do with the shoes I want to wear that day, and not the ones my bike dictates and also the fact I can adjust my pedals as I see fit mid ride.

I've got this one for you: it's because it requires considerable effort to learn to use toe straps and get comfortable with them and visually they're intimidating. Think about all the times you've heard/seen some one ask about not being out of clipless pedals or falling over because they can't clip out. Nobody asks that about caged pedals because it's just obvious that you might have problems if your foot is stuck in a toe cage, especially when the strap is tight.

Theres a thing when it comes to riding fixed: Adjusting and loosening straps in a hurry does need some actual skill when riding fixed. I attribute the rise of the hipster foot retention to exactly this issue. And despite being an avid user of toe clips and straps I too find myself to use the hipster thing and BMX style pedals on fixed gears. It retains the advantage of working with the footwear of your choice and sacrifices power, rigidity and adjustability. Keep in mind synthetic materials, the dominant material choice for hipster retention, were simply not conceived at the time of the toeclips invention.

I had branded pedals with loose ball bearings. The nut got undone (the bike was brand new, I didn't even know the construction of the pedals at the time), the cone tightened the bearing and seized it, and the axle undid itself and stripped the threads out of the crank. No such thing has happened to me with sealed bearing pedals.
Pedals are contact points and thus wear items, it's normal for them to go bad and need repair/replacement.

Oh. I literally had no idea. that makes sense as to why I really hated them, not only that my thinner shoes that fir the cages well had far too flimsy of a sole.
But yeah, I had never seen anything online about a cleat that goes with them, even when looking on something like velobase, there isn't any associated cleat with the pedal. I hadn't even known it was a system.

If you're being autistic that rear brake cable is slightly too long.

I really like to desticker those mavic wheels. Use a hair drier and plastic stuff like tire levers and a library card to lift them up, and then use kerosene and a tooth brush to get the solvent and grime off and then use isopropyl to clean them up for braking. Takes a while but looks way better clean and shiny. Also remove the warning stickers on the frame while you're at it.

Bike would also suit white bartape if you want to be really flashy.

Only thing I can think of besides what you are saying is removing the crank arm, sticking it on a big vice, heating the pedal area a ton, and using either a torx bit jammed into the hex interface, or a different vice grips that you can grab the spindle with.

I have been lucky with my used bikes and the pedals have come off most of the time.

Otherwise..... yeah new crank arm. Anything more then this is way too much effort(imo) even for nice ultegra cranks.

Or maybe look for cheap look pedal shoes on ebay....

If you really have destroyed the spanner flats (very hard to do with a good spanner), then what i've done is remove the pedal body (or cut it off), file new flats, and put the pedal axle in a vice.

Also before you get there, use a lever, i have a 5' pipe that fits over the end of a spanner for this purpose.

A heavy bike is also heavy for theives.
I use it for my daily commute to work or getting the groceries and just leave it on the sidewalk without locking.

This is a Sintesi Hale-Bopp from 1997. it's an alu frame, tig welded in Bologna , Italy. it's also a team bike from some long gone XC era.

this was one of my dream bikes, and i found it online for 25 Euros. i put in it another 15 for a BB and had to redo the medium and large chainring on the crank set (with spare parts from a 2014 Cube).

i will gift this to my best friend for his birthday (he is now running a Bontrager from the 80s).

Recently bought this for $20 dollars from an old dude on craigslist. The story is that he imported a shipping container of old bikes from France but wasn't able to sell them so he was just getting rid of them all. From what I can tell, it's a 1979 Motobecane T10. Probably one of my favorite bikes I've owned, besides the french standard BB with cottered cranks.

The little lights still work too.

I plan to ride it from PNW to Baja California this summer, wish me luck.

I think I might switch the hurret derailleurs to those ultra cheap walmart bike shimano tourney ones because the 40 year old plastic bits seem all cracked. The bars have this odd solid plastic grip (with fake leather stitching) on them, which I'd like to switch for regular tape.

The headset and bb function quite well, but who knows how they are on the inside so I'll do those too. Also, the tires and brake shoes are dry rotted. Besides that it doesn't seem to need anything.


If people back in the 70s could make trips with these bikes I don't see why I can't.

i remember my brother saving his pennies in high school to get a suspension fork for his rigid mtb (a hardrock).
Nowadays a suspension fork actually devalues an old mtb. I wonder if the original fork is around? I would go back.
A suspension fork is a 1-2 kg weight penalty, and the old ones are all worn out internally.

The rolls saddle is pretty neat. You should treat it before it dries out /cracks more. Just be aware if you dubin it or whatever then only wear black shorts because it will stain them for a while.
Get rid of it if it doesn't suit you which for most people and most old selle saddles, it won't. It certainly doesn't fit the look of the bike.

Other than that you seem attached and you could -actually- upgrade the bike.
I would start with some nicer pedals

Maybe i'm wrong but those look like the cheap basic XLC style brake lever. You should try to find some nice avid levers. Just be aware there are a TONNE of chinkshit avid levers floating around so best is to pull them off a stock old bike or get them from an old guy.
Remove the canti hanger and replace it with another spacer. Chance to service your headset.
Service your hubs. Gauge the actual condition of your wheels.

Yes, I absolutely love the general look of that frame, idk why they don't built all forks like that. No complicated drop forge parts, just tubes.
The seat post suspension is the long version (G.2 LT) of the company "by Schulz". Pretty expensive, but German made. Hint: The upper number of the weight range should be your actual weight. 65-85kg fist very well for my 80kg. The quality is superb. No noises, no sidewards wobble. Potholes and gravel roads are no problem now.
The supermotos are also great. Little rolling resistance, decent grip in light offroad conditions, and I think they will last a long time. I have 2000km on them now, and the mold mark seam at the center is still visible.
