where would one get old bikes and how much would they go for?
swap meet?estate sales?
>>2017344If those don't pan out locally, there's always the CABE, Classic and Antique Bicycle Exchangehttps://thecabe.com/
>>2017337why would you want an old piece of shit like that? just get a new bike with awesome new technology
>>2017385I like the way it looks
Slack geometry like that is hella comfy. You don't get that on modern bikes.
>>2017396rivendell has bikes probably similar.Or go old school 80's mtb. I have one of those and it's pretty comfy
pre-80s bikes are practically all worthless and in terrible condition. You can get them for free and it's not that hard to make them ride, although often you need new wheels. The important thing is just that it has paint you like. Rust is fine, rub it with linseed oil, it looks cool. Don't buy a bike with totally fucked paint and think you'll repaint it, unless it was expensive when new, it's a massive waste of time/money and doesn't recreate the charm of original paint. The one in your pic has rod brakes, cottered crank, and steel rims. It's better to avoid those things. >>2017399>Or go old school 80's mtb.this. Lots of those are very slack. They were called ATB, 'all terrain bikes'
most old bikes, aka pre war stuff and such, are either 'discovered' aka barn find and such or already in the hands of someone who knows what they'v3 got or have restored it.
>>2017410Steel rims are good you fucking muh micrograms pussy. Do more front squats (if you even lift at all) and get v-brakes.
>>2017454>Steel rims are good you fucking muh micrograms pussy. Do more front squats (if you even lift at all) and get v-brakes.99% of steel rims are on bikes that are not compatible with v-brakes. You're just saying you don't know what you're talking about.
>>2017454>Steel rims are goodgood for what dude?a cheap charming shitter? yes. Like the one i posted, with steel rims. I restored those wheels, repacked the bearings (not pitted), oiled the spokes, trued the rims, replaced the rim tape, polished them with kerosene, then hot water+ dish soap and then ispropyl and microfibreDid you restore that folder? It's very cool. Sure it's true that aside from weight and abysmal braking, steel rims technically -can be- good, but they're also a signal that every single other part of the bike is cheap and they're mostly 50+ years old at this point and ones that are not totally fucked are very rare. The major advantage of archaic road bikes is that 27" is actually a larger size than 700c/28"/29" (all the same size). That means if you put modern road wheels on a vintage bike you get more tire clearance. Every vintage bike pretty much fits gravel tires. If you stick to 27" you can have chinese CST or Kenda or worse in 1 1/4" (32mm) or sometimes 1 3/8" (35mm) (both usually run ~2mm under) or shit meme tires like gatorskins or panaracer and that's basically it.
>>201761627" might have a larger rim size than 700c but when you add the width of a 29plus or 29fat tire to the 622 rim then 29plus/fat is bigger than 27x1-3/8
>>2017621... and?
>>2017337Why would one get this piece of crap? What is it meant for?Does it generate passive income? Instead, consider getting a little old truck that you can work on. This can help generate some passive income, including with DePIN solutions like Natix that incentivize users for mapping out streets while driving. I wouldn’t suggest getting a bike.
I see a lot on Facebook Marketplace, probably 10 to 20 pre-war bicycles listed per year in my area.
>>2017385exactly. this sound much better. which would you suggest?
>>2017786>stop being into the things you're into and instead take interest in the things i'm into
>>2017790Thought this would be helpful, but regardless, do your thing. Get a new bike instead.
>>2017787It's also very expensive to restore a bicycle. I mean, relative to the end value of the bike. You'll likely put $100-$300 into a bike that you couldn't sell for $60. You'll also need tools, solvents, paints, grease, and abrasives on top of all the components you'll replace. It's going to be somewhat expensive to start from zero. I'd find a friend with a tool shed if that were the case.>>2017792You suggested buying a "little old truck" and contributing to some open-source mapping project in a thread about acquiring vintage bicycles, you fucking moron.
This is where you learn that the cycling "community" is largely made up of a bunch of insufferable consumerist gearfaggots and realize that only retarded old boomer dudes like wrenching on old bikes. All the normies will compliment you on your "awesome old bike", but all the cyclists will scoff at you.Enjoy!
>>2017786>get a old [project] truck>This can help generate some passive incomeah yes, the old pragmatic money making scheme of a project car, with no experience the fuck are you smoking
>>2017794>/n/ >not young people who like wrenching on old bikesare we even posting on the same board lol
>>2017794You're delusional, especially since covid the unracer cult has just gotten bigger and more obnoxious
>>2017794go ride
>>2017819i was in that group. solitary cycling or something like that. this shameless bitch cheesing in every photo and all the members either being fake-nice or outright telling her to stop posting her busted ass grill.>>2017823yeah and they're all riding expensive bespoke bikes that offer the same performance and comfort of a 50 year old bike at 100x the cost
>>2017794who cares dude
>>2017337Thrift shop. Always liquidated from estates/crackheads.
Pawn shops, yard sells, and flea markets for places in person. Facebook market place and Crag's List for online.
>>2017337>where would one get old bikes and how much would they go for?You need to pay anywhere from 0-250 for a perfectly patina'ed frame from either some farmer's barn, an antique bike swap meet, etc.You can also just go on ebay and see what boomers fix old bikes near you. for example here's a boomer with a 1960s schwinn panther for 750 usd. You pay to not spend time wrenching.https://www.ebay.com/itm/176280101824?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1110018%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.COMPLISTINGS%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D271352%26meid%3D0c9925ed9f8c4770802328e50e41fe8e%26pid%3D101196%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D326167082629%26itm%3D176280101824%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2332490%26algv%3DCompVIDesktopATF2V6%26brand%3DSchwinn&_trksid=p2332490.c101196.m2219&itmprp=cksum%3A1762801018240c9925ed9f8c4770802328e50e41fe8e%7Cenc%3AAQAJAAABELx1mZQ2L9jLv%252BUPTFTna8XcGfl2wNJcn022gtZb5sDi7dal8adqwpa27UZMCyBhaE%252BsWZdRM5JNKmd7n7x763yi0p4pDWmBDw8P8k5fPOMn%252BiaukFYxCjNn%252B%252FtJOBop1pQRENAAciMBkcsB4iT6B0GzYtb0%252Fl%252B%252FDSs03zYU5%252FGFEOnnsH4U1MHqyorierbbtqgs5MIEFMXVwfjd4Otp%252F1%252FOnPkQnr%252FwyCE5f8kTh0sKStjwdm0gDURwru5vHOTdE4zptzMtYYnGHKcNGwaT%252FMmOJnkds4jSU790IRVzPfqcb492rzk4%252F4SlK56aSMRxokIoLbXUz60w1laE34P31xty4TfJC5TlHrQCWQMXqtoN%7Campid%3APL_CLK%7Cclp%3A2332490&itmmeta=01J7RGCMTGS1B3FAHV5BGXY6PF
>>2017616>If you stick to 27" you can have ... shit meme tires like ... panaracer gatorskins, yeah, but Panaracer? those aren't shit .if you opt to keep 27, then you aren't in the market for GP5k anyhow. there's still a lot of 27 options but they're probably all stuff you personally don't like, but are fine.
>>2018530https://www.ebay.com/itm/176280101824fixed you tracking jew
>>2017793>You suggested buying a "little old truck" and contributing to some open-source mapping project in a thread about acquiring vintage bicycles, you fucking moronI see nothing wrong with this. He probably has a better opinion here than 80%. If you don't have the resources, then deal with what you intend to and stop shitposting. There is absolutely nothing wrong suggesting a car and a street mapper.
