Continued from last thread...

The difference between Japanese and jeet/china bikes is the Japanese actually give a fuck about their product. Meanwhile, India's #1 export is scamming the elderly. "Made in China", we all know what that means. They don't give a single fuck, they just want to trick you into giving them money. They don't have pride in developing a quality product the way the Japanese do.

...but, now that Japan is proper jeeted, in a number of years, their quality will fall to everyone else's level. After Japan has truly fallen, I will consider your jeet and chink bikes. For now, I am NOT riding and trusting my life to a machine made by jeets or chinese.

Every single product of any Japanese company is guaranteed to be reliable, because pride.
Every single product of every Chinese company is crap, because they only want money and don't give a single fuck about the product quality, even if a company has a legally binding obligation to honor its 5-year warranty in jurisdictions where they are actively trying to expand.

The only right thing to do in the changing world is to stick to your current beliefs, because being mentally like a boomer is cool.

Short: https://cfmotobenelux.be/en/garantie/
Legalese: https://cfmotobenelux.be/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/CFMOTO-Extended-Warranty-Program-Benelux.pdf
TLDR:
> Warranty covers engine, gearbox, rims, chassis, electrical and
electronic components, brake safety systems (ABS, etc.), fuel system, exhaust system
> Warranty is applicable if you service the bike according to schedule, don't use it for professional racing, don't set it on fire, don't get under a bus
The legalese mentions something about the "payment period" but this is already included in the listed price.

It seems CFMoto started to offer 5-year warranty for their side-by-sides years ago in e.g. Canada. Not sure where they offer it for bikes and where not, but they do offer it where it matters to me.

CFMoto is not exactly a new company.
Do they have a history of actively screwing up their customers? I don't know, but I didn't hear any horror stories, so I'm willing to assume that these exclusions are just the usual cover-your-ass stuff to avoid dealing with the customers who are too unhingedly creative in their destructive antics.

CFMoto produces the KTM 790/890 engines that are eating their camshafts. They also cheaped out inside and used fucking flat tappets instead of rollers. There is considerable debate whether the tappets or poor oiling from the design of the oil galleys in the head are to blame. How much of this is KTM's fault vs CFMoto is also debatable, but the 950/990 LC8 that these engines replaced did not have this problem.
>>
>>27971639
Factories produce according to the designs they are given. Unless I see a manufacturing defect I'll keep thinking it's KTM and KTM alone fucked up.
KTM was a shitty company before, now they decided to cut the wrong corners. I don't expect a factory to fix their designs for them.
>>
>>27971666
That's what I mean, was this 100% KTM engineering and followed accurately, or did they use too soft of metal for the cams thinking no one would notice? Did CFMoto contribute to the valve train design and argue for the use of flat tappets over rollers to save costs? Where is the blame to fall? The old LC8s mostly just had problems with slight oil weep around certain seals every now and again. Nothing this catastrophic, and those were a pure KTM design and manufacture engine.

>>
>>27971682
To me the answer is obvious: 100% blame on KTM until there are clear reasons to shift blame somewhere else.
The issue is consistent with issues that have been seen in KTM products over the last couple of decades. KTM tries to make bikes light, then even lighter, then bikes suddenly break in half, leak, disintegrate. This time it seems they tried to engine lighter than they could.
> or did they use too soft of metal for the cams thinking no one would notice?
A factory changes the metal, and it sneaks past the KTM's QC? KTM's fault.
But I've seen someone analyze the composition of those cams and the conclusion was that the metallurgy is OK, so I see no reason to think there's anything wrong with the metal.

>But I've seen someone analyze the composition of those cams and the conclusion was that the metallurgy is OK
U sure bro?
https://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/2024/july/ktm-camshaft-defects/

>MCN also spoke with the Senior Technical Officer at the University of Queensland, Blaire Knight, who experienced cam failure on his 790. After the engineer analysed his own camshaft, he proposed that the part itself exhibits insufficient hardness to be properly resilient.

>“We performed an Arc analysis on my cams and the carbon content was lower than I would’ve expected,” Knight said. “The Rockwell test (a test of metallic material hardness) came in at 51, when it should’ve been up at 58 to 60 to have any real resilience.”
>>
>>27971714
> U sure bro?
I'm sure that I heard what I've written, lol.
I'll look at this article tomorrow. If they allowed the cams to be made out of a wrong alloy, I'll have another, more educated reason to point at KTM and laugh.

>was this 100% KTM engineering
Cfmoto and KTM are a partnership but the engines are designed and built by cfmoto. Typical Chinese design that doesn’t go through enough R&D testing and compounded by poor quality control of the materials being used. Anyone who’s ever dealt with Chinese engineering and manufacturing (me) would stay away from their products unless they are just doing assembly and even then you need to breathe down the factory’s neck with your own quality control because they will swap out for cheaper materials to save cost and the plant operator pockets the difference the second you turn your back.
>>
>>27971727
No, I actually walked away from that, the damage didn't happen until like, six months later, when a bone sliver worked loose in my knee and severed my peroneal? nerve
Had a gangster-style limp for years, and couldn't lift my left foot independently from my whole leg, but the nerve reconnected a few years back and I'm learning to walk normal again
If I push it too hard I'll get compartment syndrome again and I don't want that
I use /dbt/ for motivation because I want to get back up on two wheel so fucking bad and I'm almost there
My bike hasn't run for so long I'm not even gonna bother trying to get it going I'm just gonna buy something fun and light and I'm 99 percent sold on the Svart 401

which would you pick?
First listed for $4400 was negotiated to $3800
Second listened for $4500 was negotiated to $4000
First seems like the better pick by all regards but it seems like a bit too sweet of a deal to be real.
Second has a lot of nice aftermarket bits and a windshield which would me save me the hassle of getting that worked out myself, but also invites the fact that it might be fucked up on the inside

I see no reason the blue one would be "fucked up inside", and the red one HAS been crashed, there is no other reason to ditch the fairing. It has receipts, the guy clearly took care of it and wanted to clean it up with little things like new grips before selling it. 4 grand for a nicely setup bike you won't have to even put tires on for quite a while and has nice pipes is the better buy even without considering wind protection.

Should I pull the trigger on the 2020 Katana? $8500 with only 3800 miles.

>>27971327
I'll come at it another way then. I hate the way it looks and I don't like giving my money to Chinese companies or manufacturers when I can avoid it.

>>27971397
I'd almost trust jeet bikes over Chinese at this point, at least there you've got a huge domestic market where they sell the same bikes so they've got millions of locals to be accountable to. China's domestic bike market was basically wiped out in the last 10 decades by bans in major cities so their industry is all export-focused now.
>>
>>27971862
Katanas are cheap all year round anon, it's a relatively undesirable bike because of the small gas tank
but mostly because you only have 4000 miles on your first bike, you should put wayyyyy more on before getting on a litre bike
also they're way heavier which isn't super fun, go do parking lot practice for a while
>>

Dropped my bike twice (low speed), didn’t get hurt but I snapped my brake lever and cracked the rear fender. I didn’t do bad otherwise though.

I agree with your points, especially with the 100 lbs extra weight. I only consider the Katana because of the look, otherwise I would never consider a liter bike.

Not really, just lost grip on gravel. The first time I was just getting going from a stop and had to turn left while the trail banked right and lost grip. Second time I was going downhill on gravel and lost grip on the rear wheel. unfortunately in the case we're talking about that wouldnt have helped. the foot thats paralyzed wasnt even damaged at all, the nerve that caused it was in the knee and i dont think they dont make gear that stops your knee from getting twisted by a car until it shatters.

Need to make a new clutch linkage, the one that is on here currently doesn't allow the clutch to 100% disengage and it's making it really hard to find neutral at stops. Had an issue with the float bowl in the carb overflowing while out riding. Shook the bike around a bunch at a friends suggestions and push started it and let it run till it died. Seemed to clear out whatever was blocking the needle. Hand shifting is very satisfying and I feel super cool doing it. >>27971365

Either of the Suzukis. KLR is a big pig with the extra fairings and just heavier everything. DR650 is better as a commuter/roadbike but a DRZ400 is much more fun at 60mph and below. Find a DRZ400SM if you can.
>>
>>27972182
Those are all great bikes. Drz is the most off-road capable, worst on the street. Klr is the best on-road, worst off road. Dr650 is in the middle. But honestly either of those 3 could take you nearly anywhere.

It is gonna take some muscle memory on the foot placement. If i can't get it i'm going to bed the foot peg mount upwards so it sits above the primary. Right now it's kind of nice besides the shoe. The distance between the foot peg and the peg beneath the shift pedal works out to being cheater floorboards sort of

Find things to complain about, nitpick at it. Feel out the seller, i.e. are they desperate to sell it or do they not really care one way or the other. Tell them your budget is $3k, you really like the bike but honestly can't go higher because you're just starting to ride and money is tight. Maybe try to connect on another level, i.e. if they're MAGA you can talk about how Haitians suck shit and Biden is a faggot. Little stuff to break the ice.

Always remember that people selling stuff are expecting you to jew them down, so they're asking more than what they expect to actually get. Everyone always says "I'm gonna ask this price, but if I can get 'X' for it I'll take it".
This is 500x more true if it's a boomer selling it, boomers love to negotiate.

I ask because there's a 2018 DR-Z400S with about 5K miles on it that I'm interested in locally, but the owner is pretty adamant about a $5000 figure.

I say pretty adamant, he complained about tire kickers last time I checked. So I'm guessing he's dealing with a ton of people trying to haggle him down. Still worth trying to do? 5K Is a little steep for a used DRZ, I've been told.

>>
>>27972278
>You can get them cheaper, but usually a little older and higher miles. depends on how much that is worth to you
First real dual sport. If I could find them a little older or with higher miles for cheaper, I'd go for it because I'm concerned I'll destroy the poor thing.

Someone did offer a KLR650 for 2400 recently. Which "can" dual sport, but I've been told over and over again not to do it or try it if I value my knees or my sanity.

Me and a friend went to go look at a barn find once. We made an offer less than what he advertised. The guy got mad and said how he could "take it down to that coffee shop where all the hipsters hang out and have it sold just at his price like that!" We didn't get mad, we just told him that's what he should do then, but if he changed his mind here is our number, we've got the cash ready to go at our offer price. He cursed and swore at us and talked all kinds of shit as we left. Later that very same day his wife called us and said to come get the bike, she'd take our offer. The dude didn't even come out of the house when we went back, his wife finished the deal and apologized for his behavior. We absolutely ripped that guy off, but I don't feel bad about because he just found the damn thing in a barn he bought and had no money in it, plus he was an ass.

I'm new to bike maintenance, what's the difference between all the types of engine oils?
>>
>>27972513
viscosity and "additives" that effect the tenacity of of the oil.
Motorcycles have "Wet clutches" meaning the clutch is bathed in the same oil as the rest of the engine, hence it's oil requires different standards than car engine oils.

so the manufacturer recommends 10w40 - 10w50, and I'm looking at motul atm and I'm not sure what those 5100, 7100, & 300v numbers mean. The description of them doesn't say either. Is this just the range of the oil or is it some tech spec?
>>
>>27972525
There seems to be some level of snake oil when it comes to oils.
Motul really likes to muddy the waters with their naming scheme.
instead of
>mineral
>semi-synthetic
>fully synthetic
They like to use their own made up terms because they use special mixes.

Just get what your manual recommends. Make sure it's JASO MA2 standard, without friction modifiers. I usually go with fully synthetic because it apparently wears out slower than mineral. I always do oil changes ~500km before maintenance intervals anyways.

Synthetic oil gives best performance, but mineral is cheaper, it's basically just different ratios of the two.

I could not find a good DR650 anywhere near me in Europe but I found a '06 XR650L for a very good price though.

The owner has purchased it in the USA and later he imported it to the EU, he hasn't used it a lot so it has about 3k miles in it, he only used it to commute to work. The bike costs about 4k€. It has been serviced recently and has tons of performance upgrades in it from delamomotorsports. It has been on the dyno and it has 58.14 hp at 6380 rpm and 98.7 Nm of torque at 5328 rpm.

Convince me to buy/not to buy this bike please. I want something bulletproof like the DR650 and good for both off and on road use.

Licensing would be the biggest thing. The XR650L and DR650 are roughly equally reliable and kind of big pigs, I hope you're tall and long legged if you want to tackle any serious trails with either. DR650 gets slightly more points from me just because I think it looks better and it has screw-and-locknut type valve adjustment vs the XR650L' shims, IIRC.

Flat tappets are proven at high RPM since flat tappets existed. Rollers reduce drag but are far less shock-resistant and are high wear items in motorcycle use even on slow-turning Harleys.

Execution is everything and there is no excuse for either to suck in 2024.
>>
>>27973514
Suzuki gives you 3 years unlimited mileage factory warranty and the importer adds on an additional 3 years or up to 100k km.
Conditions about not ruining your bike are comparable to cfmoto from first glance.
But Suzuki has the balls to give you a mobility guarantee and 24/7 support throughout Europe, as long as the dealer does the maintenance.
>>
>>27971702
Stock up on parts long before you need them, for example a couple of complete engine gasket and seal sets and of course top end parts since two strokes chew through those. If buying one buying two would be wiser so you've one to cannibalize over time for parts that go obsolete.

Have a support strategy including owning all the factory service manuals, parts books if they still print those and any factory updates, mechanics bulletins etc. That goes for any keeper but especially unsupported ones.
>>
>>27971725
No, those are irrelevant. I've followed the industry since the late '70s.

They're in deep shit because they're absurdly overpriced and dealer overhead is so high thanks to requiring Taj Mahal facilities as a debt trap for franchise holders. Coupled with market saturation and no longer producing anything resembling the classic easily maintainable elegantly simple designs that made the old ones lifetime motorcycles there is little reason to buy one new.

Exterminating customer loyalty by supporting anti-white, anti-male DEI troonism removed any reason to support them as an "American" make along with moving even more parts production offshore.

OTOH the used market is flooded with perfectly good low mileage HDs of better designs thanks to the great Boomer dieoff. The older models are easy to keep running and so thoroughly understood no one needs a new HD. I enjoy my little fleet but have zero interest in a new overpriced absurdly complex piece of ass jewelry because that far less builds me a better custom I can self-maintain for life.

They're good bikes, I had one for 4 years, but don't expect to spend much time on an American highway with one. Mine was great at 80km/hr and acceptable at 100km/hr, but any kind of time at 110km/hr killed my ass. And this is the Australian version, which is geared higher than the American one. The CBR250 is probably pretty similar, I've never heard anything bad about them.

When you're considering your budget, remember to factor in about $1k for a good set of gear, as well as things like insurance and registration.

Buying a Dual Sport for about 3.6K. It's a Kawasaki 230. Already agreed to buy it if the owner drops it off at a mechanic and they do a once-over of the bike. Is it a shitty thing to try haggling the price, now? Going through my photos, I'm noticing some mechanical things I'm sketchy with on the bike. Or wait until the mechanic has his way with it.

DRZ CHADS REPORT IN. I just picked up this CRUSTY '05. exhaust/carb/airbox is stock, which brings me to my question- it's missing the airbox cover panel and the previous owner says it hasn't been jetted for a completely open airbox. it starts right up but runs a little weird, doesn't want to go past 40-50mph, sounds a lil louder/higher revs at idle. I just need to plug that hole, right? she's dusty but the miles are low and everything else feels good.

Post pics. If the air box is opened up too much it'll be running lean.
Here's what I recommend you do
>Suspension has probably never been serviced so change the fluid in the front and send the rear off to be done (has to be charged with nitrogen so you can't do it yourself)
>While the suspension is out, inspect and great the steering stem bearing and all the swingarm and rear suspension linkages
>Inspect wheel bearings, clean calipers and pistons while you have the wheels off
>Change brake fluid, coolant and engine oil
>New air filter if the current one looks a bit old
>Lube clutch and throttle cables, this one has also probably never been done
>Figure out when the last valve clearance check was done and when it's due. Change spark plug while you're in there
>Check all your spokes. This also gets over looked all the time. Get a spoke wrench, check for loose ones but also loosen all of them by 1/4 turn and retighten to stop them from freezing
Probably some other things but any time I buy an older bike I always go through these things. It'll help you find any unknown issues too.

I really appreciate the write-up. the previous owners story is that it was completely serviced and then put in storage for three years, and he'd been riding it like this without issue while it was listed for a week or two. to be perfectly honest I'll likely do all fluids, chain and sprockets, and get the carb sorted and ride it like that for a while. here's a pic of how it is now, just completely open lol
>>27974447

I'm paying for the mechanic
Things I noticed is that he hadn't done any service at all, not even tilted it upright and looked at the sight glass. When I got there, the oil was below the fill line, way below, I don't think it was to the point where it throw the error code but it was clear he didn't do step 1 of owning a motor vehicle which is to open it up and check the dipstick. It has 5000 miles on it btw and I think it's the original oil.

Problem #2 is that along with no oil being added, neither was any oil added to the chain or sprockets. A thick veneer of rust was along the chain, and if it weren't a Kawasaki and came with a fairly good stock chain then I'm pretty sure it would have been seized. It was in the process of it when I was pulling on it. Which means the sprockets are fucked too, but I didn't see it too well.

Those things immediately jumped out to me as a bikelet wrench-fearer. I may be a faggot, but I can at least tell some basic things like "Keep the oil between the mark lines" and "oil the chain regularly". So I'm thinking of haggling the price down a few hundred bucks for the sprocket and chain replacement.

I haven't given a cent yet, and that's the only reason I'm asking. I didn't walk specifically because he did agree to take it to a mechanic that was out of town, so he must be pretty desperate to dump the bike.
>>
>>27974486
I'm thinking that I'll only take the mechanic's cut out (probably about $200) if the mechanic really finds something. Like if he's in there and he finds something I could have never found without taking the thing apart, then I'll suggest taking the mechanics fee out of the bill of sale.

I don't want to haggle too much, it's at an okay place for a dual sport around here and I don't want to piss the guy off more than I already have by wanting to take it to a mechanic that's 60 miles away.
>>
>>27974461
It'll run much better with the cover on. Do that before you start looking at the carb. Head over to a DRZ forum, they'll know exactly what jets you should put in for your elevation.

I thought all the big 4 still made at least some of their bikes in Japan? However I do not know how to find which model lines, and even more so I would wonder if it depends on which market they're destined for as a result of import laws internationally. Somebody else in here posted that (at least in the US) if the VIN begins with "J" then the bike was made in Japan.
