>>
>>27988521
The T7 is already a very modern bike with an ECU, EFI and ABS.
But it is marketed as simple and reliable bike (not that it isn't).

This argument would be valid for older KLRs, but not for the T7. The electronic systems are developed externally by e.g. Bosch and sold by the millions, with little to no room for errors.

Yamaha was an early mover on internet community influence ops.
It's just a shame that Yamaha can't afford to build more than one engine in each displacement class. Putting the CP2 in the R6 frame is just sad cope, but these are the economic realities.

Too small, think large family pizzas, and doesn't keep it warm. I could use a bigger crate and the backpack inside but then I wouldn't be able to lean because the food would also lean.
With a backpack I can lean the bike and keep myself upright.
>>27988670
My bike has clip ons, sure they are over the triple tree but I also carry the food or groceries 5 or 6 hours per day and I have to climb stairs with it on my back.
Scooter riders can lay the bottom of the backpack on the rear seat, I can't. It's always pulling on my back.

Yah, big downgrade. If KTM can do an 800cc P-twin (the LC8) developing 95+ HP there's no reason Yamaha couldn't have done the same for the R7, except money. The R7 is a parts-bin bike. Kinda cynical move on their part, tbqh.

Oh no, a company showcased what their machine is capable of when actual talent is present at the controls, despite it's target demographic and typical use case being far more mundane than the marketing would suggest.

Chris Birch / KTM and Toni Bou / Honda did the 'lmao big motorcycle go brrrrrrrr' thing well before Pol and Yamaha with the 890, 1190/1290 and Africa Twin.

All your pictures and videos you posted prove my point.

The machine itself is actually not capable of what Pol Tarres does, his T7 was practically rebuild from ground.

The first seeker movie just had a tenere with tuned suspension and enduro mousses

>Javi Echevarría, co-producer of the film, told us that the only thing they did was change the stock tires to Mitas knobbies, while the Tenere’s suspension was prepared by Erik Augé, with more oil in the fork for a stiffer, more stunt-proof ride. During some of the harshest landings you still hear both the front and especially the rear suspension clunk hard on the stops, yet Javi told us that after their week-long shoot the Yamaha “was totally in perfect condition after seven days of crazy riding to the limit.”

>All your pictures and videos you posted prove my point

All the pictures and videos I've posted are myself on my own bike, so thanks I guess.

For now I still use the OEM suspension and valving (and no, it's not very good) - all I've done is respring it for my weight.
First paragraph from your article

>Fans of Pol Tarres and the seemingly impossible stunts he performs on big adventure bikes in his Seeker video series know that each year the trials champ brings a different Yamaha T7 to the set. In the first video he used a lightly customized bike with professionally-tuned suspension, while in the second Seeker film, his bike featured more elaborate refinements.

>In the first video he used a lightly customized bike with professionally-tuned suspension, while in the second Seeker film, his bike featured more elaborate refinements.

Not setting up suspension on a new to you bike is akin to never adjusting your seat, steering wheel or mirrors on your car.

>Pol’s new bike’s suspension is entirely custom, including a custom-built 48mm fork from KYB

The machine is capable, the engine is capable, the chassi is capable, the brakes and suspension are capable.
Are they good enough for compeition use or hard enduro out of the dealership?
No.
Are they cheap enough and good enough for the average joe to ride out of the dealer while also being a be good starting point to transform into something that fits the individual rider.
Yes.
It's a street bike first like all motorbikes with a license plate are, the chassi and engine are good enough where you can get away with just upgrading the springs, which most riders who want to more serious off road do.
I don't your point anon, it's a cheap middleweight bike, are you really shocked it isn't capable of doing enduro in stock form? Neither is the DR650 or the KL650 and those bike have a lot more off road credentials.

I was looking at a 300L Rally while at the dealer yesterday and it got me thinking, is there really anything on the market that's a straight upgrade from one? Seems like everything with more power etc. is either a full-on Enduro without the big tank and wind protection, or it's a pigfat ADV that gives up a lot of off road performance. I guess the closest would be the T7 or 890/901 but they're still a big step from the "dirtbike with a windshield" concept. Why the fuck does nobody make a 450/500 with a big tank and a windshield?

That's a very old-fashioned bike that lacks a lot of what makes the 300L so attractive (being a bulletproof and thoroughly modern bike with good headlights, cluster, none of the carb hassles, etc.) and it's got a significantly smaller tank and no wind protection out of the box.

>>27989280
Yeah, and I've seen plenty of people turn bigger dual sports into "light ADVs," but it's still dumb to me that you can't buy any bigger turnkey solutions, and even when you go aftermarket like that it's nowhere near as slick of a package as the 300L Rally, like you get some lower body wind protection with that and not with a dual sport you stick a tank and windshield on.
>>
>>27989296
Carbs aren’t a hassle, EFI fucking sucks and if you can’t learn to tune a carb you’re a moron.

>>
>>27989273
I agree, the 300L Rally is definitely unique in today's market. I think it weighs like 330lb, which is way lighter than any 'Adventure Bike' I can think of.

Got my title transferred today. Last vin inspection I was told the vin wasn’t legible. I got a different inspector today. They still couldn’t read it and just copied it off of the title. Very happy about it
>>
>>27989316
Wut. The first gen KLR is only 337 pounds and that gets you 659ccs.
>>
>>27989303
>>27989305
I'm anything but a wrenchlet, I used to make a living wrenching on race cars and still do plenty of my own work. However, I live in Central Oregon, a place with mountains and major weather swings, and I don't want to have to stop and retune my carb every time I climb 3000' or the temperature drops 20 degrees overnight. I also know than nothing I hack together is ever going to be as slick or cohesive of a package as what a factory can do, especially when it comes to things like bodywork.

>>27989314
>Preferably one with a long-ish service interval.
This is one of the problems too. I know you can stretch the interval a lot when using a dirtbike as a light ADV but it's still not comparable to something like the 300L where they've basically put a streetbike engine in a dirtbike chassis. Dirtbikes also aren't geared for the highway and just changing sprockets isn't enough of a solution to that, you end up making the low gears too high that way, and one of the other great things about the 300l is that it's got dirtbike gearing in the bottom 5 gears but then a big jump to 6th for cruising, something you don't really get on anything else.

>>27989316
Yeah, exactly. Another big advantage is the relatively low seat height for what it is too, which makes it much more rideable in town or on some kinds of trails.
>>
>>27989342
Sorry, 652, not 659. Still, 330 is pretty heavy.
>>
>>27989342
That's dry weight, it's about 415lb wet. The 300L Rally is 335lb wet. That KLR is also a 37 year old design and even the newest ones are getting close to 20 so you're getting yourself into a project bike and something that you can't trust anywhere near as much as the stupidly dependable modern Honda, I know I'll get called a wrenchlet again but I prefer to do my wrenching in my nice warm dry garage and not kneeling in the mud 20mi from pavement in the mountains where if I can't get the bike going I'm gonna have to press the button on my InReach and be on the hook for a rescue bill that costs more than the bike is worth.

CRF250/300 are unfortunately shit.

They're heavy for what they are, no power and have marshmallows for suspension.

When they announced the 250L and later the 300L, both times I wanted one until I rode one.

What you describe exists as the 701LR.

I will say it's completely misleading. You see, the danger on say, a 250cc dirt bike or dual sport isn't traffic. It's breaking your neck when you get thrown from it after hitting a mud pit.

I'm almost certain if you count all motorcycle related accidents, dirt biking is way, way up there. Maybe not on fatalities but at least on injuries.

>I'm anything but a wrenchlet, I used to make a living wrenching on race cars and still do plenty of my own work
Okay I'm going to make a suggestion that's going to be very unpopular in this thread then

Buy used exclusively
or
Buy a China Bike

>Why?
China Bikes are three things
>Cheap
>Wrench-heavy
>Maintenance heavy

If you live your life behind a wrench and can keep up with 800 mile oil changes and complete teardowns/buildups. There is no better option right now than a China Bike. They're garbage shipped to you in boxes that are 80% assembled, and the remaining 20% needs loctite on it, and the first 80% needs loctite on it. They're bikes held together with loctite and dreams.

BUT
They are cheap as fuck, they force you to learn how these machines work because of how you're forced to put them together and keep up with regular service intervals, and they last every bit as long as a regular bike you pay full price for. You just have to remember they won't have fancy things like changable oil filters instead of screens or fuel injection instead of carbs.

I've seen that, the frame is different. Hopefully it's a completely different model and they continue producing the DRZ.

If not, here's hoping they do it right and it's not a lethargic piece of shit akin to the KLX300.

I don't know what the obsession with wanting fuel injection on a single cylinder is, it's way more to go wrong, adds cost, complexity and comes with bullshit like catalytic converters and vapor canisters.

>muh throttle response

TM40 works tits with instant response on my DRZ . .

>>27989749
lovely
>>
>>27989755
Because jetting carbs is aids and a motorcycle should be able to go up and down large mountains into deep valleys without chucking gas into the engine oil.
>>
>>27989755
Catalytic converter and vapor canisters are not at all exclusive to EFI, they're just usually packaged with it as a manufacturer modernizes a bike for euro 5/6/CARB/whatever. If you ride mostly at the same altitude, sure, a carb on a thumper is great. If you do longer rides with actual elevation change, fuck carbs. You do have to pay to play with modern EFI, between EGR/air injection deletes, fuel programmers, etc, but the end result is worth it.

in the same boat re tracking devices; android has one but it relies on other android phones permitting themselves to be passively tracked (and passively track other phones/transponders). I have that shit turned off, never to be turned on, and it'd be hypocritical for me to use others having it on

>>
>>27989418
Honestly, anything else aside, I've looked at some DRZs and they're too tall for me. Maybe down the line when I've got more skill it'll be a different story but I'm a 30" inseam and the 300L, which is a couple of inches lower and has really squishy suspension, is right at the limit of rideable for me.

>>27989492
Could be an option but the badass rally kits only seem to fit on the LR.

>>27989585
I have but it seems pretty even with the Honda and I'd rather have the windshield etc. from that, plus I just like the way it looks better.

>>27989677
Yeah 300L Rally is what I'm pretty much set on. T7 is definitely on the shortlist for the bike after that but I want to git gud on something smaller first.

>>27989744
I'll buy used if I can find the right bike at the right price. Actually there's a 300L Rally with good upgrades (Olhins suspension etc.) on CL right now but it'll probably be gone by the time I'm ready to buy. Dual sports hold value so well in general that you don't save much buying anything used that's less than 5-6 years old though (from what I've seen it's often the same price but with some aftermarket stuff on it) and while I'm fine with wrenching I'm getting a bike for the purpose of getting me into the backcountry and I don't want a clapped out shitbox that's going to strand me there. China bikes are a problem for that last reason and I also just refuse to give China my money when I can avoid it.

I'm down for an older bike down the line, a restomod kinda thing would be really fun, but not as a primary bike.

How do I get over the fear of dropping my bike
I've had it for like a week now and I just can't bring myself to try and ride it cause I'm terrified of scratching it up

Sick jumps bro, I've only been able to get one wheel off the ground.
I like the stripped down, high fender look. Really makes it look like a big yamaha dirt bike.
T7 is best bike

What helmet is this I mean.

>this frame is too weak for a sportbike

what a retarded way to do things, just make your metal stronger, or make it all aluminum, what was their problem?

theyre designed to take a tip over without causing catastrophic damage so its just baby cosmetic shit that would need to be repaired.

Frame sliders or a cage.
What bike? New or used?
>>
trying to get a used r7 from this dude, but it looks like he hasn't paid off the damn thing, should I risk it or walk away
>>
>>27990063
If I'm being honest with myself the bike already kinda looks not great, there's a shitty patch job on the tank and everything. It's just the idea of ME dropping it that makes me uncomfortable, I guess.
>>27990066
Used 2014 VFR. Kinda fell in my lap, not really a rider or anything, but figured I'd give it a shot. Don't really have the money for frame sliders or a cage, tbhq.

That is technically more than any other <90hp bike with a naked and full fairing version bothers to do, albeit it's because the MT07 frame is such a noodle.

I have heard some people say the R9 will actually have its own frame making it more of a legitimate R6 replacement just using the CP3 for emissions simplicity rather than being a dressed up MT09 but we'll see if it's true.

Not a huge amount of any specific riceburners though a wide variety survived. They're durable but when they're worn out they're less than ideal to overhaul vs just grabbing another used one.

Best fix is strip the tank, remove corrosion then torch braze the leak shut.

However if you want to seal it you can sand the area down or sand blast to give the metal plenty of tooth, then apply aircraft fuel tank sealant. Semkit and others make "B-half" which seals nearly every US military aircraft in many roles from fuel tank to canopy to panel faying sealant. Every mechanic needs a kit. It gives no fucks about diesel or hydraulic juice, let alone fuels.

https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/proseal09-04493-4.php

The price has gone up but it's a non-invasive way to seal small shit.

Since that's not a stock frame you could restamp in future if necessary (or take a clear pic with your phone then zoom it which is much better than a magnifying glass). What's it titled as?

I don't see a top engine mount. They're cheap or ya can make something interesting. Also if the carb lacks a carb brace or the air filter housing backplate isn't attached to the cylinder heads that should be corrected lest ye have surprise intake manifold seal leaks down the road.

There's an even better way to support Evo carbs which is the Ram Jett solid intake (make gaskets from gray Fel-Pro since they're out of production but readily available used). The ones stamped "E" fit S&S carbs (B or later E, I ran both over the years. The only ones that don't are narrower and stamped "S" for Sportster.
I've slung loaded my engine off the intake with no issues.

I once blasted past a group of Bandidos bikers in my 350cc 2 smoke. Stopped for fuel and a burger at a service station and as I went back to the bike parking, my bike was boxed in by them.
Luckily they were really chill and just asked "what the fuck is that thing, smokes like all hell".
Chatted for a minute or two, they bid me safe miles and let me back out of the spot.
Luckily I've never really had bad encounters with "leather vests"

Yeah I need to figure out a top motor mount, picked up a cheap one but don’t like it the fit. Its title as a 90 softtail the motors form a 92 fxr so same thing hit just a different vin, vin is there on the frame it’s just covered in powder coat, all thought I knock the “HD” in it down pretty bad trying to sand away the powder to make it more visible. I don’t plan on selling the bike so how that I have a title I don’t care really have. The carbs looks set up and supported fine but I appreciate the advice. It’s got a cv carb on it, the old owner was running it without a filter which seems insane to me. The only use 500 or so miles since a rebuild so hopefully no serious damage was done.

The whole bike has needed a bunch of little shit dialed in, it’s been a good excuse to get to learn a bike I didn’t build.

What you riding, obviously have some experience with Harleys

Flat tappets are designed to spin on the cam for even wear. Roller tappets can be retrofitted into flat tappet designs, but not the reverse.
So if they're making someone else's roller cam head designs chinese while trying to use flat tappets then its gonna destroy the cam, but usually the rollers or the tappet retainers break first.
>>
>>27990751
Nah it's a solid bike, gears and steel, not a lot of electronics. I just want to pull some more horsepower out of it that's the thing. All I know is filter, exhaust, stroke and bore.

>>27990758
Besides tires and maybe trying to reduce weight (I doubt it weighs much) thats all you can do
