What protective equipment do you wear?I'm going to be doing dual sports and I've been told multiple times: "Get a knee brace"
>>27994590Not necessary, but knee pads/shin pads are highly recommended. Elbow pads optional. Boots and helmet MANDATORY.
YAMAHA
Anybody else go dual sporting today? Today was a perfect rural New England fall day.
was a perfect day for wheelies to forget your feelies
>>27994590>What protective equipment do you wear?
My front brake line is cut, thinking in epoxy and tape. Any better tips?>inb4 buy another
>>27994610Buy another.
>>27994590i dress like so
>>27994610Take the sticker off a banana and wrap it around that cut. Good to go.
>>27994590I'm >>27994597 and fucked up my knee offroading when I used it to brace myself falling against a boulder after a wiping out last year offroad. Had I wore my riding pants which I custom cut the thick neoprene padding for, I wouldn't have felt a thing. Instead I had a severe bone bruise that's healing over a year later. That said, I'll live fine. I offroad in jeans and hiking boots out here, but I always have a riding jacket (shoulders elbows and backpad) as well as helmet and gloves, especially for the street. I've eaten shit offroad in the past and a good riding jacket that protects the spine is extremely important.
>>27994603are you the guy that 69d his nip gf with the feet???
>>27994610just ignore it, its fine
>>27994621So it's not a bad idea to at least have some kneepads? I just don't want to spend $500 on a set of braces.. That said, I can see how one wrong move can break my knee like a chicken bone
>>27994628Anon, the smallest accident on a motorcycle is life threatening. My best friend growing up died going 25mph. When you ride, you take your mortality into your own hands.
>>27994620>>27994627I’ve already hit it with a hammer but it might still hit so I need a strong tape on top. But what to glue the cut with? It bends
>>27994628I highly recommend enduro or mx boots if you plan on riding on a rocky trail. I got away with riding in hiking boots for years and finally got some enduro boots. The other day I smashed my foot really hard between a wall of solid rock and my bike. No damage at all. The other benefit besides protection is the solid sole makes standing on the pegs for long periods easier on your feet.
>>27994623you know it
>>27994653not him but I'm interested in this too, what are considered cheap but acceptable options for these?
>>27994645I'm sorry to hear that. It's true that even with all of the padding and accessories, I cannot predict the possibility of simply taking one fall in the wrong position and dying immediately. It's a very dangerous sport I've signed up for. >>27994653I have motocross boots, actually. I got the Leatt 3.5 boots because my foot is wide. They feel fantastic but right foot is tight, so I'm trading up for the next size. >>27994659I just got what was on sale at rockymountainatv that was cheap and in my size

I hate to admit but I think I am lusting after a dadbike. Anyone here ridden both a gen 1 Vstrom and a gen2/3? Is the new gen significantly better? If I had the cash I'd just buy a 1050 and call it a day, but I really, really, really hate the teardrop headlight years and the old ones are cheaper, which is nice. >>27994971It doesn't have to be EXACT exact. Just pull the bar ends off and either pull the grips off or slice them. Measure somewhere between 1/2" to 1" on the bare metal, mark with a fine tip sharpie. Hacksaw or dremel or grinder or whatever, your choice. Smooth the edges out. Re-install controls. Spend the money on a set of Oxford heated grips if you're dailying it into winter, it still gets a bit chilly in California.
>>27994995>vid relI flew to Texas to buy a 2014 V-Strom 1000 (1050) and ended up riding 19 hours back to the west coast. Didn't have the previous gen, but did have an SV650. Suspension on the VStronk is top notch, lots of mods available, pretty comfortable overall (I mean I rode 1000+ miles with 1 night of sleep). Fairly heavy bike if you actually plan to do technical off-roading, ABS and TC are pretty ancient but work, lots of plastic for $14k~ MSRP back then. Engine is solid and fun, can romp and have fun or just cruise on the highway comfortably. Owned for about 1 year before I got bored. Looking at the F650GS twin now (2008-2013) as it's lighter, more economical, and probably more fun to ride.
>>27995025Fly, buy, and ride home is so fun.
>>27995025I am proportioned like a whacky waving inflatable tube man, I want it as a streetbike that doesn't cause me physical pain to ride. I have now learned that raising links exist that would probably make it handle a little better, the seat looks insanely comfy, as does the legroom and huge fairing. No desire to do anything more than hit a dirt road to a campsite occasionally.
>>27995030HYB>>27995036It is a very comfy bike. Mine came with 2" ROX handlebar risers that bring the bars higher and closer to me. I have average human proportions, so I'm not sure how you'd fair. Just have to find one for sale and go for a test ride, see how you fit.

Can't sleep. Going to look at this gsxr 750 tomorrow and possibly purchase. Wondering if owning 5 bikes and 4 cars will put me over the edge, but then I remember our currency is shit and it's better off in a hard asset that won't depreciate significantly.

Would you go for an off-road dualsports or for a sport road as a first motorcycle?Like the idea of both, good trails around (north Spain) and good roads. What bikes would you recommend? Preferably European, Aprilia, KTM and Triumph.
>>27995531>as a first motorcycle?>good trails around (north Spain) and good roads.Get a bike you won't mind dropping and looking ratty, it's you first bike and you're gonna fuck up and drop it even more so if you're gonna take it on dirt roads.Discount all the premium brands and get something cheap and japanese or an old KTM.
>>27995526Up to you, really, on how faithful a reproduction you're working with.Personally, I don't care about that so long as the replacement is serviceable - peers be damned. >>27996206>>27996197No, it's stupid. If you want a fall-proof lever, you either (A) make it bombproof or (B) make it out of wet spaghetti so it harmlessly bends and can be straightened with a wrench or pliers.
>>27996222The R7 was developed to be the Ninja 650 equivalent, not ever to outright replace the R6. Adapting the existing MT07 frame makes more sense, the engine as a stressed member provides plenty of stiffness for street riding up to probably B group track pace.
>>27996262>make it bombproof>transmission explodes instead
>>27996262>(B) make it out of wet spaghetti so it harmlessly bends and can be straightened with a wrench or pliers. That would work a lot better in plastic, BMW just fucked it.You could even design the part so it's rigid in the shift up-shift down direction and bendy in the others (and then manufacture it at no extra cost). Plastics are pretty cool.

>>27996264>plenty of stiffnessNot with that single backbone tube leading to the steering head. Notice where the custom frame adds tubes. Those braces should go to the top of the steering head but that's impossible with the way Yamaha laid out the bike.
>>27996286>>27996265>>27996187Folding shift levers exist. $11.35 USD from Emgo.
>>27996304My bike came with a folding tip shifter
>>27996264But Ninja 650 sucks ass
>>27996304Imagine spending $30,000 on an "adventure bike" then having to spend another $11.35 on an aftermarket shift lever because some German engineer thought it would be a good idea to make it out of plastic.
>>27996188Plastic hood release levers weren't a bad idea, until they snapped off the joint.
>>27996335So does the r7
why would you even try to bait in a general on /o/ thats what the rest of the board is for
>Supertechs are $90 cheaper with K*M brandingWhat a truly horrible choice to have to make.
>>27996335That's because Kawi doesn't put much/any money into development of it. The R7 was meant to be a clearly superior bike to steal Ninja 650 customers.
>>27996299I don't know if you know this, but it does use the engine as a stressed member, so it's not quite ye olde single backbone.
>>27995714Put some shrink wrap around it. You might have to cut the line to slip the wrap around it, but you can just put a 2nd one in there to cover and splice the cut part too, so you'll be fine
Hea so smol bros
>>27996468That's a breather filter
>>27996411You vill vear the jeet brand on zur feet!
>>27996456>Put some shrink wrap around it. >cut the line to slip the wrap around it
tfw a person waved at me in my 125 (and it was a girl too)
im buying a Suzuki GSX-S1000 because im too poor to afford a ZH2 or an MT10-SPam I making a mistake?
>>27996500I got super strong epoxy, I'm going to glue it tomorrow and tape on top. It's better than nothing
>>27996451The engine being a stressed member just means it doesn't need a cradle. This is what a cheap ass Ninja 250 frame looked like in 1988 (and not much different from what it looked like in 2017 for that matter)
>>27996530Epoxy isn't going to bond properly, better to cut it and shrink wrap splice it to keep it safe.
>>27996534Shrink wrap is not strong enough. My bike is what gives me money, if I don't ride I get no money so I'm obviously going to ride it like this. At least the epoxy and tape might keep it from suddenly losing all pressure.
Basically the MT07 is the same kind of frame except it has welded drop tubes for the front engine mounts while the Ninja 250 had bolted on mounting brackets. If anything the rear engine mount/swingarm area looks flimsier (even more compared to the 2008+ FI Ninjas) which adds up with that ghetto bolt on reinforcement on the R7.It's one of those things where Yamaha really minmaxed making the bike that would do the sickest wheelies and hardest acceleration for the least money knowing those would leave the most impression on most target buyers so it's pretty below average at everything but weight and engine.
>>27996545No it won't as the pressure will just blow out the epoxy and squirt the fluid out from there.Shrink wrap will splice the line itself back together and the heat will melt the glue inside the shrink tube on to the cut part, connecting them back together again
>>27996341And buying it from Emgo, e.g. Emilio Gomez.
Make up your fucking mind google
750 is the perfect bike.
>paint bubbling and peeling off my tank patch job
>>27994610>>27995609>>27996597Is it actually leaking fluid? You pic is unclear if that is an actual hose or a rubber cover over the hose.
>>27996598
>>27996600Time for an anime sticker.Also>>27996600triple checked
>>27996602It's not leaking. Hope you can see here, cover has been cut, the rubber hose (ribbed part) has been cut where the red line is, underneath there seems to be metal stranding that has been hit too where the purple line is.>>27996598Congrats on the new bike bro
>>27996614the guy I got the bike from did both the tank patch and the paint and both are so overwhelmingly shitty I might just let the bitch rot off under the rain and the dice with finding a replacement tank, I don't feel like fucking with the patch anymore. sucks cause other than the the tank is basically pristine, no rust or anything, but man, I have no clue how he wrecked it to get it the way that it is but it's just complete shit.
washed my gear on saturdaybad smell gone but fucking hell does it take its sweet time to dry, still a bit wet in places this eveningruined my sunday riding plans
>>27996597Rubber hose won't have the structural integrity to work as a brake line, the pressure will make it swell or pop.Not only that, but it will start "sweating" the brake fluid through it. I tried using fuel/oil hose for brake hoses from the reservoir to the cylinders in my car and the lines started sweating fluid through them the very next day.
>>27996629>bad smell goneCould you smell it though?I haven't washed my jacket and pants liner for about 3 years, since I got them, and I've sweated a lot so I wonder if it smells bad. I don't smell it
>>27996616Someone cut it to weaken it so you would crash and die. Who hates you so?
>>27996641Most of the car drivers by now. I wouldn't be surprised, but I think it was the turn signal bracket - >>27994651. This was before hitting it with the hammer
>>27996635yeah, one of them smelled so bad that if I put it on for 5 mins I'd need to take a shower. I didn't use it much because I bought a summer jacket that looked better anyway but it got a bit smelly after a long ride in the rain. leather gloves still fucked though, completely sodden and don't seem to be drying out at all. also lost my summer gloves somewhere so looks like it's going to be another £100 thrown at gear.
>>27996598Mine was pretty OK
>>27996671Was yours a flathead or EFI?
>>27996449I don't think they directly compete. The ninja is more sport touring.
>>27996604T7 chads, we win again
>>27996713>Awful seat>Clipons (albeit raised ones) and overall still a fairly street-sport rider triangle>Not that heavy and thus not super stabile>Zero factory luggage options>Laughable pillion areaAre you the same retard who calls a CBR650R a sport tourer? The Versys bikes are Kawi's sport tourers.
>>27995788That stuff is reserved for the liter bikes.
>>27996721Versys are Autistic Dad Vehicles (ADVs). The Ninja 1000SX and H2SX are the Kawi sport tourers.
>>27996598You are a cringe faggot.
Any of you play Ride 5? I downloaded it last night for my PS5. Never played any of the Ride games.
>>27996721Wow sweet cliponsThe bars are like 5mm lower than the Z650, it's upright as fuck.
>>27996728Kawasaki had it in the late 80's on the GPX 600R.Your argument is invalid.
>>27996752>>27996728This.
>>27992889Shit video, fuck you
>>27996739The Versys bikes use 17" wheels. Sport tourers. The Versys-X models are soft ADVs. >>27996750>>27996754So it's almost as upright as a naked bike. Nakeds are not tourers. Adding a fairing and changing nothing else does not a sport tourer make.
I feel like you could probably start riding on anything under a liter and you'd be fine Why are people so anal about NOOOOOOO GET A SLOW BIKE FIRST
>>27996773It's more recommended to get a cheap bike first. Slower usually means cheaper.
>>27996773because most people dont know how to use a clutch and everyone dumped their clutch by accident at least once
>>27996773Noobs will blip the throttle around a corner and low side. That's 80% of the reason. The other 20 is a mix of things from making sure you have skills before going really fast, getting something cheap enough you can not be too committed if you want to go a different route or end up dropping it, ext.
>>27996773Even a 600 can very, very quickly achieve speeds that a brand new rider cannot take corners at or decelerate without panicking from. It's better for them to learn to extract speed and get smooth on a slow bike than just be good at twisting the throttle on a faster bike. Our own R3 twink nearly cheese gratered himself on Palomar, if he was on an R6 or gsxr750 there might have been enough speed going into that corner to seal the deal.
Thoughts on steel braided brake lines on classic bikes? Is it taking from the vintage handling characteristics of the bike and lose some of the classic feeling?Pussy way to modernize and improve safety or much needed replacement?
>>27996792If they need replacing anyway you might as well get braided. "Muh classic feel" be damned, more stopping power/better brake feel never hurt anyone. You don't run shit rubber on them, you run modern rubber. Modern spark plugs. Modern fuel. You're not diluting it, you're keeping it and yourself alive.
>>27996773Remember the horny tranny? Started on a 600 and now he's dead
>>27996773Harder to go full retard on a smaller bike. Literally all there is to it, you can start on a liter if you think you're not a retard.
>>27996786if you are dumping the clutch with the throttle all the way open you are just a retard, that isn't really a mistake I was in a decent position from the get go, driving manual and all, so maybe that colors my opinion of what the average person can actually handle >>27996791My primary struggle here is that the implication is the rider isn't necessarily what is keeping new riders from death/getting hurt- it's just the fact the bike itself is incapable of the things that would get them hurt. Doesn't seem much like learning to me. Throttle control, speed management, etc is all something that is important, and as someone who started on a 700 and has gone back to ride a few 250s I can't see a world where it's objectively better to start so low. They are fun bikes, yeah, but they are fun solely because they don't come with the risks or the pressure of a larger bike. Which isn't really teaching you anything at all, at that point.
>>27996768I really don't care what arbitrary distinctions you use to classify a sport tourer or not because it's one of the most poorly defined vehicle segments to exist but the R7 only targeted the Ninja 650 as far as people who wanted a 650 sport bike had no real options since the SV650F went out of production.
>>27996792go steel. if you want them black just paint them
>>27996796I got pink horny tranny banned by reporting every single post xe made with that loli avatar.
>>27996796>dead just because someone escapes the shithole doesn't mean they are dead xhe's prolly dead though
>>27996800>if you are dumping the clutch with the throttle all the way open you are just a retard, that isn't really a mistakedoesn't have to be all the way open, could be taking a slow tight turn in the friction zone and have it slip out of your fingers and surprise a new rider that doesnt have their reflexes keep them out of someones fenceline
>>27996801I think a pretty reasonable description is "something that retains performance oriented aspects but is built to actually be comfy and travel", so we circle back to rider triangle, factory luggage, and huge, comfy seats. This can obviously go very different ways between upright bikes like the Versys series, Multistrada, etc, and just fucking huge bikes like the FJR that aren't necessarily tall or super upright, but have factory luggage, massive wind protection, long service intervals, and a very wide seat.
The tank is so pretty, I don't know if I can bring myself to put side grips on it. Just gotta touch a couple minor scratches on the side fairings.
>>27996803It's been so long though, probably unbanned already and posting faggotry in the f/a/ggot cartoon forum, at least it stays there. Unlike some of these faggots that feel the need to bring that faggot trash here.
>>27996815love the color, nice choice. the blue frame is sweet
>>27996800> just the fact the bike itself is incapable of the things that would get them hurt. Did you miss the part where R3 twink almost slid through a fucking guardrail off of a mountain? That would hurt quite a lot for a few moments, then you don't have to worry about pain anymore.
>>27996815>he got the blue frame gixxerHHHHNNNNNGGGGGGGG
>>27996814The VFRs get called sport tourers but the VFR800 is just a sport bike that stopped getting faster 30 years ago and the VFR1200 was just a really fat version of it.
>>27996822Again, something that is theoretically possible on any bike can't be used as evidence in an argument about CCs, it just doesn't make any sense. If he'd been on something bigger, he would've been being equally retarded, and riding as equally out of his skill bracket, and would've had to get equally lucky to survive. Nothing to do with the CCs, everything to do with skill and not being retarded. Twisties are fun but you should have at least 1000 miles under your belt before you even attempt them, regardless of what size your bike is.
>>27996828VFRs are about the sportiest sport-tourers that really do blur the line. Factory hardbags available, huge gas tank, factory centerstand, single sided swingarm for mid trip easy tire changes, and big fatass comfy seat bring them into sport tourer territory, barely. They're nowhere near as hardcore as the rc51 or cbr600 that got sold alongside them.
>>27996835So you just argued FOR smaller bikes with that post, do you understand why? If a rider is trying something maybe outside of their skill level, a lower performance ceiling is more likely to keep them in check with less ability to lose the rear end via throttle, and carrying less speed into corners.
>>27996841And then we loop back to the restraint not being on the part of the rider, it's on the part of the bike. Then he rides it for a year, pushing the redline every time because he's a retard with no restraint, says "oh, a year is up, time to upgrade!" and immediately kills himself on his brand new 750 because the 300 didn't teach him what restraint was, it was just keeping him alive for an extra year due to it being slow. If anything, all starting on a slow bike teaches you is to not be scared of motorcycles, which for some people is a mindset that they already walk into the hobby with and never end up walking out. There just happens to be a slight chance you put that same retard on a 600 to start and he realizes A: how shit he is at riding, because they aren't as forgiving and B: how easy it is for things to get out of hand even when you are "good". And it keeps him alive for a lot longer, because the bike forces the restraint upon him.
>>27996852By any chance are you from the Midwest? You don't seem to be taking cornering into account.
>>27996841still not CC related. you could enter a 20mph corner at 80mph on an r3 if you wanted to. at track days the C group riders on 1000s dont crash more often than the C group riders on lower displacements.sure higher displacement might be more dangerous for a noob whos going 200 on the freeway with no experience but at that point its just natural selection and its probably for the greater good anyways
>>27996855Nah, I'm from the northeast. As I said above, I started on a 700, and am perfectly fine (for now, hopefully for a lot longer). Cornering is hard, cornering on a high CC and heavy bike is harder, but if you've got a valid license you should, even just starting out, be able to gauge a relatively safe speed to enter a turn.
>>27996840The 600s had the same ergos and a center stand until the RR. Single sided swingarms were a race bike feature.
>>27996807Skillnissue>>27996828I saw the vfr1200 up close, hes smol too
>>27996795>You don't run shit rubber on them, you run modern rubber. Modern spark plugs. Modern fuel. You're not diluting it, you're keeping it and yourself alive. This does make sense. And I guess steel brake lines already existed around 1989 so I guess it could have been used back then. Thanks bros>>27996802
>>27996852I for one will also teach my children to walk by putting them on narrow board elevated in the air so they will learn to fear losing their balance instead of getting overconfident when they just fall 6" to the ground. Also protip: your bike is not fast
>>27996880>>Also protip: your bike is not fastGreat so now we are in agreement that it doesn't matter what you start on cause everything under 1000ccs is slow. Retard.
>>27996872We were putting "earl's" braded brake line kits on our bikes in the 1980's.
>>27996883So our options at this point are that this entire argument has been a nobiek larp on your part or you're the retard with too much confidence from the bike you started on here.
>>27996893Very cool. Do you remember if aluminum fittings existed or it was only stainless steel ones? I tried researching a while back but came empty handed
>>27996896>the retard with too much confidence from the bike you started on here.bingo, but my bike is slow, apparently, so
>>27996898What bike?
>>279969091987 VFR I've had for about 5 years
>>27996914Are you the anon that doesn't lean and scrapes pegs? That's not a slow bike.
>>27996920It has the same power to weight as an MT07, which is about half of modern 600 and a third of a peter.
>>27996920I lean when I'm in a leaning situation, but I don't think I'm the person you are talking about. All the early VFs/VFRs are pretty slow, the CCs sound high but you are looking at about 500lbs give or take, plus the weight of the rider. They typically make 80hp at redline bone stock so you can push it if you really want to, I guess. I never do.
>>27996928But it is a 1987 bike, it was faster than most of the stuff in the road back then and it probably still is.>>27996931Yeah, your VFR is older.
>>27996864I put 51 k km on her the last 5 years and she never let me down, scumbag mehanics and faks thought they would convince me that my f4i aint worth shit, meanwhile my bile outlasted many newer bijes, plan to rade her as long as sve goes ...
In 5 minutes I will be making the new thread and it will be a low effort OP.
>>27996951what kind of lines did those wrench monkeys use on you to convince you the honda wasn't gonna last lmao
>>27996863I guess we are stuck disagreeing. My viewpoint is that starting small, even more than the safety issue, is better at reaching riders to coax speed out of the bike, instead of being scared of it. They can learn to respect the throttle as soon as they get on a bigger one and see how fast it is.
