Guy I bought the bike from only ever rode it down to the beach and so the paint on the frame is pristine but the unprotected things like the forks are oxidized pretty bad
Youtube says some 1500 grit and aluminum polish should do the trick but is there anything else I should know about the process? I've never actually done any cleaning work before so I don't want to fuck anything up along the way

as an addendum I'd like to gush about fz6
fz6 really makes me feel like a dad, I'm so much more relaxed while riding now knowing that I can accelerate at any time and any speed. If I can't make a pass now then I can wait a few seconds and make the pass then. I was concerned that having so much power at my wrist was going to make me too tempted to do felony speeds 24/7 but I've found that being ahead of other traffic really is all I wanted and wasn't just an excuse I was making up for myself to hoon.
On R3 any time I dropped below 90 it would take me 5 seconds to get back up to 90 so I would just weave the freeway constantly because if I was ever slower than traffic I didn't have the ability to get out of a situation quickly.

It feels so perfect for commuting on, everything about how the engine responds feels just right. Having the choice between shortshifting with a steady rise of power throughout the gears or feeling both low-end torque and a little bit of a peak once you fully wind it out is perfect. Part of me does wish I could experience the race bike style "all at the peak" power curve but this is probably better for dailying.
It's shockingly stable at low speeds for how heavy it is and I hardly ever have to put a foot down (which is nice because I have to shift my whole ass to the side to get my whole boot on the ground or put just my tiptoe down and look like I don't fit on it). Inline four is as smooth as I expected and sounds INCREDIBLE. Engine braking isn't nearly as sudden and aggressive making rev matching so much easier and more rewarding.
I'm looking forward to wrenching on it as soon as possible because the center stand seems like it'll make everything much easier. It's a bit intimidating because damn near everything is in the front of the bike but I'm excited to take on the challenge

I appreciate the well wishes on my new (to me) Gixxer, brahs. I've been working on it and my zx6 non-stop since I got it home. Lubing all the cables, locks, adjusting everything, etc. Just under 10k on the odometer, 2011 my. I went over the whole bike, all it needs is spark plugs, oil change, air filter, brake fluid. Typical maintenance. Probably could use an ECU tune for the full exhaust as well, but literally nothing is actually wrong with it. It even has almost new tires. I rode it 70 miles home.

So now the question...what to do with the zx6 or the Ducati. The zx6 is fine now that I know it's just an electrical glitch. I've got it dialed in for the track. I'm thinking I might just keep it and use it for track, twisties, and lot practice. Either sell the Ducati or keep it as an investment/money holder while our currency tanks.

5 bikes is a lot. I already took the Ducati off insurance because I'm not going to deal with 5 bikes in rotation. Too much maintenance.

You really should have made your own fz6 (r6 + handlebars + (-1/+2 sprockets)) but fuck it fz6 has more low end pull so just utilize it. It's literally barely detuned anyway it makes like 90-100hp vs r6 110-115. You should post acceleration shifting streamies i know you're gonna have to speed up those shifts. fz6 won't like slow shifting!

unironically start stunting it, I imagine with your background you can build it as a proper stuntbike and not just a regular bike with a cage/pizza sprocket. Texas has a wealth of empty lots to practice I'm sure and you've already tackled the track so it would probably be an interesting new avenue of motorcycling to learn. Would also be another bike you can take off the insurance.
Also that frame on gsxr is sex

I don't have R6 money, the only reason I bought the fz6 instead of the gsxs750 like I planned is because I'm poor lol. R6's are all way inflated out here, even the most clapped out one you can find is still $5k
>You should post acceleration shifting streamies i know you're gonna have to speed up those shifts.

If you mean having a small inline four to scream through twisty corners then yes small bore fours would be badass for that, however it would probably be cheaper to import a full japanese small bore four than it would be to pay for some dumbass full racing package on the 4rr

The bike I've been shilling is widely available now, youtube has lots of fresh videos from motojournos and average joes, people share their experiences with it in comments. The worst things people say are:
> not as good on trails as trail bikes
> not as good on highways as touring bikes
> throttle is snatchy (but others claim it is fixed with the software update)
> bash plate holder design is a bit dumb
Only specsheet warriors and country-of-origin-matters folks (who never dare to look at VIN of their own bike) hate the bike.

I wonder how long will it take for anons here to warm up to it.

The pins in red hold the brake pads, they should have a clip in the back you undo, pull the pins out and you have the brake pads off.
You will need to push the pistons back, you can clean them before pushing them in if you want a more complete job.
To push them in use a strong lever to push on the old brake pads.
To remove the caliper you undo the bolts in blue, get some sockets to unscrew them.

how dumb of an idea would it be to try fit USD forks from an R6 onto an FZ6
There's seems to be a lot of documentation for this type of project online but it does require some machining and sufficient know-how, which I don't have
Not trying to overcompensate as I know I don't ride that intensely but the lower triple on this is rusted pretty badly and I know that's the most stressed member so I figure if I'm going to have to replace the forks/triples anyways a full new front end from a wrecked sportbike wouldn't be the worst idea in the world as they tend to go pretty cheap

After doing a bit of research it seems like everyone just tries to swap the forks and nothing else, would it not be easier to just swap the full front end? It seems like the only area where you would run into problems is the steering stem compatibility, adjusting the steering stops, and setting up cable management again.
Has anyone here done a cafe build with USD forks? Are there things I'm missing? Still doing research and would appreciate hearing more firsthand experience

my current lower triple tree is really badly rusted from previous owner parking it by the beach a lot, it's the whole reason I'm looking at upgrading the front end in the first place

Because the forks won't fit the triple tree.

Doing a USD R6 conversion on an FZ6 is basically just an arbitrary front end conversion with the exception that the front wheel will still fit. The only straightforward front suspension swap for an FZ6 is the RSD FI R6 (03-04 R6, 06-09 R6S) and even that requires some extra spacers and brackets and/or additional R6 parts because the fork bottoms are different.

Just swapping lower triples is about a billion times easier and several times cheaper.
>>
>>27998998
worth doing then, a whole r6 frontend will be quite the upgrade
>>

Full front end swaps are only really worthwhile if the stock brakes are super ass and you need different fork bottoms to get decent ones, you need adjustment that isn't possible with the stock ones, or you have an autistic zoomer compulsion that every bike has to have gold USD forks or else it's lame like last year's iphone. Forks engineered and set up for another bike aren't going to inherently be an improvement, and unlikely to be more of one than just putting the right fucking springs in rather than the progressive stock things.

>or else it's lame like last year's iphone
nope, I quite like the stock silver painted stanchion as well. Mid 2000's silver bikes (sv650s silver frame) are very pretty and not a common sight anymore. But the paint is peeling up on the stanchions, the triple tree is crusty, and the forks are pitted so I figured it would probably be better to ditch my current ones altogether.

>>
>>27999347
Same anon here. This isn't a perfect solution for the rust, almost nothing is, but short of taking the entire lower triple off (forks out, head lift stand or jank ladder strap method, etc,) and getting it sandblasted and painted, this is the best you can do. I come from the midwest, i know that rust looks like shit but that is nowhere close to a structurally compromising amount. If you have a dremel or corded drill, that will take it off more completely than hand brushing.

I went and sat on a KLR today. It was easier to get feet down and balance on then I thought. Maybe a viable first bike option after all though I still feel like maybe a lighter dual sport would be better.

aside from sending it to go get sandblasted that sounds really fun

I figure, I wasn't planning of dumping them asap but just as a feature to upgrade when it's convenient and I have money to comfortably spend
>If you have a dremel or corded drill, that will take it off more completely than hand brushing
so just wirewheel method? or should I be using a different type of wheel for getting it off. Does any kind of paint work? Are they particular types of paint that are better for the application of preventing further rust?
I apologize for all the questions and I appreciate what you've answered so far

I usually go out of my way to find new local coffee shops on da bike. That's actually a past time/date thing that my partner and I do, riding way out to a new coffee shop or cafe.
Not many coffee shops that are open late near me tho which sucks.
>>
>>27999389
Wire wheel, yes. I am super autistic and once assumed that when someone said use a wire brush to me, it had to be an actual BRUSH so I spent 2 hours making almost no progress brushing by hand. Figured most anons would know what I meant but we're all retards here. Rust is just a chemical reaction called oxidation, where the iron molecules get turned into iron-oxide. Sealing the metal with paint prevents oxygen from touching the bare metal, thus no rust.

>>
>>27999112

>>
>>27999372
I went the first dual sport route. I would say if you can get a KLR cheap do it. I could have got one for $2400 and I regret not just getting it, putting dual sport tires on, and sending it down the trails. Dual Sports do not train you for riding heavy bikes, and you need heavier adventure bikes if you want to y'know, go anywhere. No one likes riding a DRZ400 in fifth gear at 6K RPM to reach the brisk speed of 70.

I'm in my third year of riding. my bike was down for maintenence for about a month and a half, and in the last couple weeks since I got it going again... I realized I basically barely lean

I'm not quite grannyriding, I'm braking hard into corners and powering out pretty smoothly. but I'm slowing down so much that I'm essentially not going over more than ten-fifteen degrees. most roundabouts feel thrilling because I'm slaloming from one side lean to another in the space of a few seconds .

idk where you're located but I see better buzz in hillcrest, on that same street there's also cafe lestatz. They have nice coffee and they're famous for being open until 12am, they used to be open 24/7 but covid shut that down. Hey Anons I’m planning on getting my first bike soon, my mind is already made up on getting the Kawasaki Ninja 500 but I’m a little conflicted on whether or not to get the SE ABS version or not and if I do get the SE ABS version should I pay another extra $200 for the anniversary livery? (I really like it)
The SE ABS version is an extra $1000 and comes with the following
>ABS as you can guess
>High-grade full color TFT display
>Kawasaki's Intelligent Proximity >Activation Start System (KIPASS)
>LED turn signals
>Large windshield (clear)
>Pillion seat cover
>Frame sliders
>USB-C outlet
>Tank pad
>Knee pads
>Radiator screen

you will drop it and crack the frame on the third day and all the money spent will be pointless

Yeah and I definitely want to go with bigger ADVs for later bikes, maybe a T7 if I end up super into dirt but otherwise probably an AT. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get one really cheap but I've got like $10k saved up in my bike fund (has to cover gear, training, etc. too though) so I can buy a brand new one if I really want to and I'll just throw crash bars and handguards on it ASAP for the inevitable drops.

>>27999493
The kipass is shit, it’s not as reliable as a regular key. The Taft screen I pretty sure is the same as the base model. The extended screen is ok, but there are better aftermarket options. Led turn signals afaik are also on the base model. Pillion seat cover is cool, but iirc the actual passenger seat is not included. The Kawasaki frame slides are fucking ass and are flimsy, even if you end up with a base model, some trex or shogun sliders I’ll be a million times better than the kawi ones. The tank pads and knee pads are not what you think, they might as well be painted, be there is 0mgrip on them, and I don’t think kawi intended for them to do anything other than serving as a decal. Rad screen is also meh, aftermarket parts will out do it, and for cheaper. The only thing it’s got going is the anniversary colors and the preinstalled charging outlets.

>how do u know, anon?

I see this think every day as a dealer wagey. Also don’t be fooled, it’s still an old ninja 400 bored out to a 450, called a 500. I guarantee you’ll be happier saving your money getting a 400 ninja and putting what you save else, or even a future bike.
>>
>>27999578
>>27999493
I would vote for a used ninja 400 for the following reasons:
1. The pearl nightshade teal from 2021 is the best bike color ever made
2. Your first bike sets the context for speed. You'll always think your first bike is retardedly fast when you first get it, then get used to it, then crave more. So if you get a slower first bike you're setting yourself up for more satisfying upgrades in the future.
3. You save money
4. You have more fun because you're less afraid to drop the bike
5. You get more of your money back when you sell it

You should get a used bike with abs for cheap. You're probably going to drop your first bike.
If you're dead set on the 500, abs anniversary livery and spend another $600 for an impaktek cage because you're probably going to drop it. You want abs as a beginner and the anniversary livery is nice. Unless there's a color that you'd prefer.

Yoshimura is a very well known and quality brand. MOST aftermarket mufflers are straight-through design like that. The pipe insert is called the dB (decibel) killer and is to quiet the muffle a little bit more.

There isn't really any one specific way to refer to them but that's a rolled tip/edge/outlet anyways and the turn down is otherwise called an angled outlet. Rolled tips can be either outside like that or inside which looks smooth, as opposed to a slash cut.
