back in the 70s did suburbanites drive around f650's and what not or were people able to get through life with 7000lb tow rated trucks and cars?

when did the need arise for the average american to tow as much as a small big rig? seems like a ton of peeps have HD trucks.

they say our forefathers were real men, how could that be if their trucks couldnt more than 10k? back then would it be common to see folks cruising around in a flat bed f650 and what not?
>>
Those where basically only used by construction companies and farmers.

Hence why you see their remains on farms or those construction equipment graveyards

people didnt use them for personal use? was it not common to see these parked in driveways for hauling personal boats and atvs and campers?
>>
>>28129152
They sucked donkey balls and were fine to about 55 mph and no more. Nowadays they are a lot more accessible so why not have it.

No casual research on the powerboat scene and RV size growth over time shows you those are post 1980 phenomena.

Most people pulled tiny trailers and small boats up until the fiberglass revolution

I want to buy a used grain truck, scrap the bed and just booze cruise it around on the weekends.
>>

>7000lb
this is eurocuck tier, I can't imagine dailying that
I need at least twice as much

The dirty secret that Ram sorta figured out is that no one needs this massive capacity truck in an everyday truck. And it’s just manufacturer dick waving and checklisting for marketing purposes.

Ram figured it out with the five link rear suspension which gave them a tow rating hit but their ride was so much better it won over new customers. So they could only tow 12,000lbs and the ford could tow 14,000 and rode like shit.

If you needed to dig a hole it was more likely done by 5 guys over the course of a week vs 1 mini excavator in half a day.

Same shit with passenger cars. Going somewhere for a weekend? A small suitcase you carried by hand. These days my wife fills up a 6.75 foot bed ram to the brim with bare shite. I carry a backpack and maybe a small 2x2 box of dry groceries.

>So they could only tow 12,000lbs and the ford could tow 14,000 and rode like shit.
Except Ford is the only manufacturer that gives you the de-rated tow limit. The others just give you the best case 0 grade 0 altitude limit.

Wow, completely wrong. Ford and GM were the last manufacturers to adopt J2807 tow ratings, adopting it in 2014 for MY2015s. Toyota adopted it in 2011 and Ram in 2013.
And since the GM trucks were available 3 weeks earlier than the Fords, Ford was the last manufacturer to be J2807 compliant, instead of the only manufacturer compliant like in your fantasy world.

Quality of life was significantly lower in the 70s, people generally couldn't afford big expensive toys like popout trailers and big fishing boats. That stuff didn't become common until boomers started to hit middle age in the 90s.
>>
>>28130045
Ok. Mix domestic bleach with 10M hydrochloric acid and a penny.
>>
>>28130054
Pop out trailers didnt exist in the 70's.
>>
>>28130225

No market
>>
>>28130225
That's what I was getting at. They didn't exist until the average person was rich enough to be able to afford such an ostentatious luxury item.
>>

A 20ft fibreglass boat and trailer is like 3000lbs. Any full or midsize car of the time could easily tow that. My 1991 LTD has a tow rating of 5000lbs with the smogged down 150hp 302. So a big block could probably do a lot more. They underestimate tow ratings on purpose now. Realistically a camry with a class III hitch, transmission cooler, and cargo shocks could tow anything you could realisitcally need to.
>>
>>28129152
More anons need to take the grain truck pill. I have two. Dodge c500 with a 318 poly and a c600 with a 361.
>>
>>28129152
I remember when I was a kid we got kicked off our mobile home lot and my dad towed our single wide like 8 miles from soldotna to sterling with his 80s F-250 and his buddy drove behind in a cargo van with a tow rope so he could assist in slowing it down.
>>
>>28131186
>1991 tow ratings
>they understimate tow ratings on purpose now
actually we have real standards for tow ratings now, SAE J2807, which only started in like 2010
>>
>>28130054
and now the american way is to need all that shit?
>>
>>28129152
Its always been this way, to those who could afford it. HD trucks are just a lot more accessible now.

Cool shit man.

they were towing john boats, pop-up campers or MAYBE an airstream ($$$) at best. None of which would even be close to that weight.

Plus most if not all cars were some sort of body on frame with an i6/V8 which would tow something pretty easily. Pickups were farm tools and rode miserably so they werent something any well off businessman of the time was gonna buy to cruise around town in.

Anything bigger and you were probably just hiring a company with a truck to move whatever it was that needed moving.

You need about that much capacity to carry an average American family and their snacks
>>
>>28133537
Feelings aren't hurt. I did learn something new with respect to the standards. Just fucking with you tard wrangler. I still love my Ford anyhow.
