Looks like we're the bad guys again

not me, I've never owned a vehicle that weighed more than 3000lbs / 1400kg.
>>
Cars are literally hitler. Hitler also drove cars, kinda racist methinks.
>>
>>28130625
Only about 10% of tires sold in the US have a treadwear rating of 600 or higher. Wouldn’t it stand to reason that cheap tires, which wear out faster, are shedding more microplastics? Stop making cheap tires. This also improves road safety.
>>
>>28130625
Oh no, I guess we need to start importing millions of invaders and make those 15 minute cities.
>>
Actually the real bad guys are electric cars since they use up tires faster
>>
Man, they're really REALLY piling on cars now.
>>
>>28130625

And what exactly can u do about it ? Tires don't have alternatives . Asking to stop using rubber tires is same as asking humans no to breath so less CO2 gets into atmosphere .
>>
>>28130750
This. And tires arent plastic.

>Asking to stop using rubber tires i

Rubber isn't plastic. It doesn't come from petroleum like plastic. It comes from rubber trees. All we have to do is go back to using organic rubber sourced from sustainable trees instead of using all the plastic based additives
>>
>>28130746
my cheap tires (Solarus Starfire AS) cost $400 for a full set and have a 50,000 mile treadwear rating. People actually seem to get that figure too based on reviews before I bought them. Not all cheap tires are shit, just cheap chinese and taiwanese tires.
>>
I always thought what ever happens to the rubber as it wears out.
>>
>>28130709
Hitler didnt have a license tho, he was driven around
>>
>>28130761
Just ban all driving no matter how inconvenient it'll be and will totally crash the economy and enrage the debt holders who WILL start not only employing PMCs but get their relatives in the military to pull a coup so they can get whatever it is they think they're owed, or whatever it is they can get so at least they can maintain their standings so they don't fall behind and get crushed by the others.
>>
>>28130748
yes but we need to make said 15 minute cities in swing states for some reason :)

All tires have a uniform rating, the Uniform Tire Quality Grading. The UTQG is literally the only thing that matters when buying tires for normal driving (that is, not specifically for mud or racing or whatnot). Anything else is just brand loyalty or marketing gimmicks.

The tread ware rating is generally 1/10,000 of the expected mileage. Tire manufacturers literally can’t advertise a tire as lasting longer than the tests prove. We know (generally) how long tires will lasts based on testing, and those results are available to everyone (and on the sidewall).

Get ride of cheap tires and the microplastic situation improves.

>>28130625
>we
Nobody on /o/ is driving a 10k pound EV. Pigfat EVs are so hard on tires due to their weight that entirely new tires are being made catered specifically to handle the increased weight and wear - since otherwise many of them are blowing through sets of tires in just a few thousand miles of normal driving.
>>
>>28130750
Microplastics are less of an issue than climate change, which EVs solve a huge chunk of.
>>
>>28130827
If you did that tires would explode way more often unless you slowed cars down.

thinking about it, cars have evolved like barely anything else in the last 50 years. but tires are still just tires. There was no groundbreaking innovation for a long time

>hurr heavy vehicle tires always existed!
Kek some of you people are just so god damn clueless. There's an entire new category of PASSENGER CAR tires actively being developed for EVs purely due to the fact that they're heavy. You expect people to run 10 ply heavy duty tires on an EV crossover or something?
>>
>>28131267
Yes. People use heavier light truck tires on EV’s. These tires exist. It’s what people use. How is that confusing to you?

>>28131065
Treadwear ratings aren't standardized though.
any tire maker can stamp any TW rating they want on a tire.
hence the current "200tw" SCCA tire market full of actually 40-100tw tires
>>
>>28131485
>Tread wear ratings aren’t standardized
They are though.

>>
>>28130625
Rubber isn't a plastic. Microplastics weren't a thing until the last 20-30 years. Tires existed way before then.

None of this adds up until you have some anti-car muckraker that's wanting to expand the definition of "microplastics" and wanting to put out a hit piece on cars.
>>
>>28131684
you might be surprised to learn that tires aren't manufactured out of 100% rubber!
>>
>>28130761
we can go back to the age of rail
more public rail transportation means less cars on the road
japs have figured that out
america had that figured out 100 years ago too but they decided that they need FREEDOM and now pay for it
>>
>>28131812
80% of japs own cars and 100% of japs hate riding the subway, even though theirs is 100x cleaner and more functional than those in the west.
>>
>>28131276
The problem is those heavy duty tires have never needed to be quiet because they were always used on trucks with loud diesel engines. Now EVs don't have engines so they need a heavy duty compound and tread design that is quiet, long lasting and has a high load rating. I'm really curious to see what happens because my shitbox has a set of Michelin defenders on it. They're quiet and last a long time but if I can get a tire that is even quieter and lasts just as long, I'm totally down
>>
>>28131684
Modern tires are a synthetic compound made with rubber these days
>>
>>28130827
Modern tyres are a bit more than rubber too. Hundreds of millions of £ is spent on developing tyre technology for the road and race track.
>>
>>28130802
that bacteria would grow and spread onto the road itself, getting on tires as they drove by and causing the tires to fail prematurely. there is no free lunch: any highly effective solution is going to have side effects.
>>
>>28131865
>they all have diesel engines
No they don’t, retard.
>>
>>28131518
let me rephrase that,
No one enforces treadwear rules.
So tire makers can slap whatever they want on their tires
>>
>>28132430

Tires are tested by third parties. I know because I’m involved with those third parties, being that I work in metrology (though not in materials science). Most are nesting contractors, ostensibly for legal reasons. The test data is submitted to the NHTSA. Theoretically, sure; a manufacturer could submit the test data, put conflicting information on the sidewalls and listed specifications, then be heavily fined, and have to issue a mandatory recall as well as a round of firings. Any examples of that happening?

If this is an issue then a bunch of motorsports should begin new tire wars with biodegradeable compounds. If you're going to do environmentalism, at least make it based.
>>
ive always wondered who picks up the blown out pieces of tire i see on the hiway every single day, never seen a single person picking it up but its always getting replaced must be the same as the roadkill fairy
>>
>>28132608
Roadkill is at least biodegradable and gets eaten by animals then microbes. Plastic just turns into tinier pieces then gets stuck in things forever

There's one piece of plastic / rubber that does save the environment. Fewer people makes the biggest impact.
Also under 3,000lb car running cheap hard tires that last 50k+ miles.
>>
I feel like 100 years from now people are gonna view rubber tires as some stupid barbaric thing of the past.
Just like how we laugh at lead pipes for drinking water or asbestos for insulation.
>>
>>28130827
tires are mostly made from synthetic rubber and carbon black (basically soot - carcinogenic)
natural rubber is like 10-20% of the blend at best
>>
>>28132584
My brother in Christ, every single competition tire used by the SCCA has a bullshit treadwear number.
every single company has different parameters for testing that.
example: a Michelin engineer tested the old Bridgestone RE71R with their methods.
it was 90tw according to their metrics.
Bridgestone says it's 200 tw.
the Victor P1 (200tw,) tire has a similar durometer rating compared to a 40 treadwear slick.
nobody enforces that stuff
>>
>>28130827
There probably isn't enough land to grow enough rubber trees to only have 100% rubber tyres

The hyper-environmentalists will have you use public transit and bikes (and move to cities). It wouldn't eliminate the problem but it would definitely decrease the pollution from tires.
