How stupid would it be to buy a diesel 1998 Peugeot 406? The offer is for $6500, but I could probably try to haggle for $5000. It would be a weekend car.

No issues, a bit over 100k mi with all the bells and whistles from the local italian enthusiast workshop. If the luxury or sportiness is not your jam and you want to cosplay as a common frenchman, make it a bit of a meme, catch some late nineties feels, long lost nowadays, go for it! I too see the appeal. But keep in mind, that for 6k you have the right to request, that your Pug is spotless, with flawless records, low mileage and perhaps even cheeky but sure warranty for a brief couple of months or so.

I tried searching (as I do not want the headache of importation) and I found two Peugeots (the other was a 206, but the guy want $16k giving a whole boomer autism speech about how it is one of 250 206s that match the description), a Renault (which was a 5 Turbo), and a number of Citroen 2CVs and a H van (with prices ranging $13-60k) and one Fiat (but it was an older 600).No Alfas (apart from the new ones), no Rovers, no Talbots, no Skodas, etc. The only makes I did not really bother looking into were Tatra and Lada.

My main hobby is not /o/, but I guess /o/ adjacent (soaring), I did some of my own wrenching, but of course, I can go to a supplier, or, if push comes to shove, a Halfords and get what I need. Now spares will be more difficult, but not impossible. I know a guy with European diesel parts in Connecticut. I know that certain models of 405 have common engine parts, so that is a bit of a relief, in a sense.

I can see the temptation if you come from where those cars are ubiquitous, and if you're in the area I suppose you'd have nothing to lose going to look at it, but I'd be extremely weary with those type of sellers, as in my experience they're usually very dishonest.At the same time, it does look pretty clean and is priced right, for an imported special-snowflake car at least. Just don't let it be an emotionally-guided purchase if things end up feeling off is all, not that I'd know of any other alternatives other than importing your own.
