>Ford sells the Ranger pickup
>everyone loves it
>they slap a passenger cabin on the frame and call it the Explorer
>people go completely nuts
>they proceed to put a bed on the Explorer and call it a Sport Trac
>same frame and powertrain as the Ranger that everyone loves
>overall poor sales
What went wrong?

The God awful OHC 4.0 and its horrific timing chain guides.

ive always kinda wanted one

The average person buying a new car has no idea what mechanical issues the car is known to have unless it was on the news or plainly visible for a decade.

Everyone told me mazdas all rust when I told them I was got a new mazda 3 a few years ago. People still think hondas and toyotas are super reliable vehicles. Ford will be the wet belt manufacturer for the next decade.

Because just buy an F150 and get a better truck with more capability, comfort and resale value for the same mpg and not much more cost.
If you want a ranger you buy a ranger but these things were the worst of all worlds
>>
>>28956707
well um also the ford 150 is not a new design but the ranger dates back to 2011, now, and prior to that dated back to ***1976*** so you were buying effectively a 25 year old pickup. I mean I remember riding in the explorer. It was solid in the snow but creaky and rough as fuck and ancient.
The Explorer is simply more practical for families and they didn't do enough to make the Ranger/Sport Trac nice at all.

It was ahead of its time. The world wasnt ready yet.

The GF has a 1st gen sport trac
>transmission needs a shift kit before 100k miles or 5R55ER tranny kills itself
>engine will one day snap the timing chain on the BACK of the engine
>timing chain replacement requires engine R&R
>back window regulator is broken and when they break the glass slams down
>6 different front suspensions for the 4x4 models
>read that again: 6 different front suspensions for the 4x4 models
>impossible to know what suspension you have until torn down
>parts are fucking stupid expensive and impossible to find
that said, the sport trac adrenalin has a blown v8 and crazy rally level AWD system
I've seen one in real life and it was rusted the fuck out
1st gen sport tracs rarely rust

Yep One of the sloppiest slushboxes ever conceived. It's a purposely broken 4 speed, the extra 'gear' comes from putting OD on in first.
>>
It's called market saturation.
The Sport Trac didn't offer anything that wasn't already offered by existing Ford vehicles, and compromised too much to really be good enough at any one thing to justify itself. If you wanted a quad cab, you got an F-150 for the same price, and if you wanted a small truck you got a Ranger for $8k less.

I had one as my first car and I loved it, it was great for a 16 year old. Enough room for friends, truck bed was big enough I could haul stuff, towing was enough to pull a trailer and some quads, and simple enough to wrench on as well. I drove this bitch across the country with no problems as well, was a great time. I think I had about 285k on it before the rust finally took it, I miss it every day. Pic related was a few months before I scrapped it

My F150 does this too

>The GF has a 1st gen sport trac
She has a 1st gen and it still isn't over 100k miles?

I also heard the timing chain guide grenading the engine which is why I wasn't excited about keeping my Explorer Sport (not trac, just 2 door) but that seems like a long list of complaints about a 15 year old car.

Were they? I still see these things on the road.
